couldnt agree more, Masjid Jamek LRT station is pretty messed up design-wise. im guessing this was partly influenced by the challenging site topography (?) being next to a river bank, plus poor soil condition. i remember working at the bank muamalat HQ building next door way back in the '90s when the station was under construction. and constantly worrying if we would be affected by the underground piling/structure works ie if our building would tilt or sway 😬.
@PlanetDoug6 ай бұрын
It makes sense that the design/engineering/construction of the Masjid Jamek station would be affected by the nearby river system and the soil condition there. I never thought about that before. All I know is that more than once, I've found myself standing on the wrong platform and wondering how the heck I even got there. 😀

Jamie is an American traveller. I met him through my KZbin channel. He had plans to spend some time in Kuala Lumpur a year or two ago, and he sent me a message on one of the social media platforms. He treated me to a coffee at Starbucks way back then. 😀 And we stayed in touch. And he just happened to be back in KL when I got here this time. We both like to wander around on foot, so we managed to get together for a couple of small adventures while he was here.

No doubt about that. The days have been very warm in this part of the world. There's been a lot of talk about heat waves and such things. Sunny days like this certainly help the video when you are wandering around with a GoPro. That's when they perform at their best. Jamie just left, unfortunately. I'm going to miss the guy. Just watched John Saboe and his recent "Kuala Lumpur - Best Way To Get Around" vlog. Have you watched it yet?
@PlanetDoug5 ай бұрын
I watched most of it. I enjoyed it just as a fellow KZbinr interested in his editing style and the information in the video. But I did have a ton of thoughts. I really didn't like the constant use of the transition with the loud sound of tearing paper. That got annoying really fast. Way too loud and abrasive. And I enjoyed seeing all the video of the various parts of the city, particularly the shots from the monorail. However, I don't think the information he gave was very useful. It all seemed to be quite disorganized and incomplete. It was a bit of a scattershot jumble. I don't see how it would help very many people to actually understand how to get around Kuala Lumpur using the RapidKL system. It felt incomplete and random to me rather than a helpful guide.

@@PlanetDoug After the first instance of the paper tearing I also found it quite irritating but I did like the AR effect of indicating places of interest while in transit.

Original name of this 45km lrt line is actually named as *Ampang Line* and not Sri Petaling line.. It was diminish later in late 00s as 2 different lines but shares city route and their stations as interchange.... 1st phase of this line was from Sultan ismail station to Ampang terminal (depot) thus the line got its name... The 1st phase opens in 1996..while 2nd phase(Sultan ismail- sentul east) opens 7 months later in 1997..the 3rd phase(chan sow lin - Commonwealth/Sri petaling) opens 1998 along with KJ line...
@PlanetDoug6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the history. It can get quite complicated to understand how big transit systems like this develop. The information that I found and put in the video came from this short section on Wikipedia: "In 2006, the government announced the Sri Petaling Line extension project. The extension comprised 11 new stations over 17.7 kilometres (11.0 mi) of elevated track beyond Sri Petaling station. This extended the terminus of the Sri Petaling Line from Sri Petaling to Putra Heights.[7]" What I was mainly interested in was why the LRT line was called Sri Petaling when in fact it ends at the Putra Heights station. And from what I read, that happened because the LRT line originally ended at Sri Petaling. And the custom was to name the LRT/MRT lines after one of the terminus stations. But then they extended the line and the new final station was Putra Heights. But they still kept the old name. I've always found the naming systems for these LRT/MRT lines in Kuala Lumpur to be confusing and illogical. It doesn't make sense to me to use names that are based on the terminal station in just one direction. And this situation illustrates a problem with this naming system.

You could take MRT to get to Sunway Velocity, either Maluri or Cochrane station
@PlanetDoug6 ай бұрын
Yes, you're right. The MRT also goes to Sunway Velocity. I know a lot of people get mixed up coming from there, because the Maluri LRT station and the Maluri MRT station are right beside each other. But it's easy to miss one or the other. People sometimes intend to take the LRT but then they go into the MRT station by mistake, not even knowing what they've done. For me, however, the LRT made more sense. My hotel is right beside the Masjid Jamek LRT station on the Ampang line. It's a straight shot directly to Maluri. To take the MRT, I would have to take the LRT to an MRT station somewhere else and transfer. And that doesn't make any sense because I can just go straight to Maluri on the LRT from my hotel. 🙂

A new place to explore on my next trip to KL. I also walk everywhere... to offset my eating! 😁 Hey, I walked down Jln Pudu also, opposite direction. Went to ICC Pudu to check out the street food. Saw restoran 68's spread, but had a breakfast buffet at the hotel. Neat downtown area. Very precarious...I too walked on what seems like the edge of the highway. Made a break for it when traffic slowed and ran across to get off the hwy.😂 CC

All of that sounds very familiar. 🙂 I often myself walking along the edges of highways and then dashing to the median and racing across to the other side. This is the land of highways and cars. Committed pedestrians have to work things out on their own and find their own way. I've been thinking about going back to ICC Pudu. I've been there a couple of times for breakfast in the past. But I haven't been back for a while. Any recommendations from your visit?

Ah, bananas. I grew up in a tropical jungle where I had access to all tastes and forms of bananas; green, yellow, red, small seeds, big seeds, etc... I remember one kind of banana I had in the jungle that was mostly seeds and somewhat astringent. When I was in Malaysia, I made a point of eating all varieties of bananas and mangos. In Italy, all I was able to find was Cavendish and a bit disappointed. Modern electronics are becoming more and more 'single use' and unfixable. Our first TV, when it needed fixing, the technician was able to swap out an individual chip on the circuit board. 20 years later, I was working as electronic technician and we were swapping out the whole circuit boards. Almost everything is glued shut now. My phone back glass broke a few weeks ago and I was quoted $120 for repair from a third party shop and $200 at the manufacture store. The same phone in used condition is going for about $300 and the shop offered me $100 if I sell it to them. It still functions as a phone so I am still debating what to do with it.
@PlanetDoug6 ай бұрын
Bananas are endlessly fascinating. I grew eating bananas (Cavendish, I assume) in Canada that came from the grocery store. And I still remember being astonished the first time I went overseas and saw an actual banana tree. I had no idea what they looked like and how they grew until then. And now I can't help but take another picture or video every time I go by a banana tree. I remember going down a deep rabbit hole one time and reading all about the history of the Cavendish banana. It's a captivating story. I'm sure books have been written about it - like a photographic coffee table book about the history of bananas. I'm still waiting to hear whether my camera is going to fall into that category of being "single use" and unfixable. I've seen that same trend in my lifetime. I grew up at a time when it was still cost effective to troubleshoot electronics and then repair/replace individual components. But then things changed. I guess part of it is that labor became much more expensive. You can't pay anyone an hourly wage to investigate a problem and track down exactly which small piece is defective. It takes too long. So you simply swap out the entire motherboard on a computer and get on with your life. It's wasteful, but that's how things are now.
@RaviSingh-cr9mo6 ай бұрын
I had two banana trees in my back garden and they were the type which had seeds in them . Here in London where I live now I have told my mates that I've eaten bananas with seeds in them and they look at me like I'm a weirdo 😂 . Need to find better friends 😂😂😂

@PlanetDoug6 ай бұрын
Well, they make a good cup of coffee and offer comfortable seating. 😁 It's hard to argue with that. I've tried out so many small, local coffee shops in my time, but you never quite know what you're going to get. The coffee is usually very small and just lukewarm by the time it is served. I think I keep returning to Starbucks because my latte is always served super hot and has a nice coffee flavor. That's rare for a latte. Everywhere else I go, the latte is more like lukewarm milk. Starbucks is expensive, though.

@@PlanetDoug I’m not up on the Meme world. I do like that you’re incorporating third party sources into your content. I also enjoyed the voiceless segment of you describing the roadways to a music soundtrack.
@PlanetDoug6 ай бұрын
I I like the idea of inserting third party content as well: audio clips and movie clips and anything like that. Of course, I don't think you should get carried away with it. I've seen some KZbin videos lately where they tried so hard to insert jokes and memes and references that it just became way too much. And it takes a surprisingly long time to track down a clip and get a copy and edit it or shape it so that it fits in. But it's fun. I've come across the "He needs some milk" meme probably hundreds of times. It's always in connection with someone who gets injured or looks exhausted or needs help in some way. The solution is always to give them some milk. I guess milk is good for your bones and gives you energy. 😁 I kind of liked that voiceless segment as well. I didn't originally choose to do that. But when I inserted the music, I noticed that it played over top of this segment. And I liked how it worked, especially since I was pointing at the highway system around me and I made hand gestures as I talked about how we walked around and under and through and backtracked to finally get to where we were. And the music naturally faded out right when I was pointing ahead to where we were going next. It all seemed to fit together nicely so I muted the audio of me speaking.
