My grandpa used this same method during WWII, and went on to teach others the process. Seeing this long after he’s passed I feel like I’ve grown closer to him while still learning something amazing! Thank you

Yes. In fact, teaching is part of being a seafarer. On board, when you go to sleep, you need to trust that newer officers know what they´re doing, so you teach them, as you learn from more Senior officers.

If you veer of course say go north, you need Trig. for Right an non right angled triangles. You surely need calculator on board. In the old days they probably used those books with tables. Thank god for GPS!

Page 561 The development of flight instruments made it possible to navigate airplanes by dead reckoning, without the need for being able to see landmarks.

But this method is no longer generally used because errors in the functioning of the instruments and changes in winds aloft make it unreliable.

This keeps coming up as circular logic. If you are on a fully functioning boat with chronometers, short wave radio, GPS, etc, etc, etc, of course you are going to know your fixed position. From that you can calculate the bearing, heading and speed to determine your current position. If your boat sinks and you wake up in a lifeboat several days later, circular logic is useless. If you don't have a fixed position and don't know an assumed position finding your location from a circular logic approach isn't going to work. Accurate navigation was possible and done after the invention of the chronometer, the magnetic compass, the sextant and navigational charts. This was centuries before the inventions of short wave radio, the gyro compass and GPS. Passing an exam and surviving under adverse conditions in the absence of modern navigational equipment are two completely different issues. There must be a way to know your location and head you craft back to land without the information provided from modern equipment. david

Refreshing yourself on DR would come in useful if some country detonated an EMP weapon in the atmosphere or the GPS satellite network was knocked out.
