Quick tip for anyone with a new account. Let it age for 90 days or 3 statement cycles, then apply for credit cards. In the meanwhile open a pledge loan account or secured credit card to build a relationship

If your savings account had $250, you could ask them to offer you a pledge loan of $200. If you default, they just take the money you have sitting in your account that was used to pledge the loan initially.

Hi Naam, 3 years ago I joined NFCU and soon after I was denied my 1st. Credit Card with them as I had pretty bad credit due to a Trucking accident, loss of my career (and a Home Foreclosure). After doing the best that I could (at 75 years old) trying to repair my credit, I now have 2 NFCU Credit Cards one $33,000.00 and now the Flagship $25,000.00. 2 days ago my Fico score at NFCU came in at a Unbelievable 850 ! 👍🏽 This sounds good and very exciting. I opened my secured card with $5,000. I have my military payments directly deposited monthly. I keep at least $195,000 in my savings at all times. However, my credit is at around 625 now. I keep seeing the Flagship card when I go to log in on the app. I am thinking about trying my luck at applying. I believe they are going to be graduating my secured card next month. I want to get a mortgage with them next year. Wish me luck 🤞🏽

@@mmlsweet there are some methods to maximize the credit score benefits that you’d benefit from knowing. Take out the loan, then after the loan proceeds are deposited, immediately pay down to 7%, then pay a small amount each month for the remainder of the term. Credit score benefit can be north of 50 points. Plus, when you pay down, the money is immediately returned to your savings account.

I'm unsure if other Credit Unions do this, but with NFCU you can get secured loans against your CDs at 2%+cd rate (making your money liquid again) with the benefit of still growing money, especially if you aggressively pay off the loan.

@@LuiBC3 -- I'm in the process of converting my Dad's (who has an NFCU). But they show the rates online. I definitely see HUGE benefit of direct depositing to a NFCU account. You can also call them; I also believe there is a secured option via online portal.

@@PaulWalker-po7zl -- if you pay more than payment amount (as I have done with their auto loan) they will show payment due of $250 (as in my auto loan), but the date is currently set for 08/24. That's how far I am paid ahead. You ARE NOT refinancing a pledge loan. What I said was, "As you pay off the loan, those funds are unlocked/unfrozen." On a CD, you aren't really going to do anything with that. But with "savings", those unlocked funds can now be moved into a CD or somewhere else. Does that make sense? Shout back if you're still stuck. P.S. You do not want to (if they even allow it) make multiple pledge loans from the same Credit Union.

I'm unsure if other Credit Unions do this, but with NFCU you can get secured loans against your CDs at 2%+cd rate (making your money liquid again) with the benefit of still growing money, especially if you aggressively pay off the loan. (I copied this over from my initial comment). Keep in mind, pretend you save your money in bank savings at 1/4% annual or half percent annual, thinking you have saved 10's of thousands of dollars surely the bank will give me a good loan rate? Auto loan: 5-8% if you're lucky and you're still paying a loan off regardless of the $$$ in your balance. With NFCU, I haven't seen anything that beats paying back a loan at 2%; maybe a Cash Value Whole Life Insurance Policy (as the compounding is tax sheltered, etc.).

The Navy FCU recently changed their website which is not as good as previous. It erase my transfer settings and no statements available to download. Some of the bank activity is not showing in my accounts, but it shows on the paper statements. The advise here is for young adults and does not apply to seniors, like me.

Get off this credit wheel. Start living with what you have.

I have only used a debit card forever. I finally realized I needed to get credit when I went to rent a car at Hertz when an emergency came up. Hertz looked at me like I just crawled out from under a rock when I whipped out my debit card. They required a deposit of $500 on top of the rental price and they refused any car except the cheapest one on the lot. And this was after the embarrassing wait while they first ran a credit check. Hertz also took forever in releasing the hold after the car was returned. My deposit was locked up for another 30 days. After this experience, I started seriously looking for building credit. So yeah, a credit card is kind of necessary these days.

The flagship would help. Just keep in mind your internal score only effect credit cards apps. If you have a solid personal credit score, you should be good for other products.

Nah, I pass with Navy Federal. They are racists. Navy Federal approved more than 75% of white borrowers who applied for a new conventional home purchase mortgage, meanwhile less than 50% of black borrowers were approved. Navy Federal approved a higher % of white borrowers applicants making less than $62k a year than it did with black borrowers making $140k or more.

Navy Federal has a very stringent process for mortgages. You may qualify at Bank of America, but you better have your ducks in a row, before you apply for a loan at Navy Fed. Black, applied and we were approved. If your numbers aren’t in order, apply somewhere else.
