The thing I missed most about being an OS was being around a bunch of intelligent, motivated guys who were conversant on a wide variety of subjects, well read for the most part, and of a curious nature. When I as discharged back to civilian life I was dismayed by the number of dull, incurious people I had to deal with in the workplace. I know that sounds snobbish but that's just the way it is. They may be good people but the fact was they were just boring as hell compared to my bright, open minded OS mates. I still don't have friends as close as the ones I had in the Navy. We truly were a "band of brothers."

I know the feeling well shipmates. Im still in touch with my old OS buds from my first ship starting back in 1990. Civilians just to dam lazy and last for my taste. Shout out to all OS (CIC) Naval personnel. My brother served as such on the USS Little Rock and the USS King in the late '70s-early '80's. He would've loved nothing better than to pursue this as his career path. However, the politics that interfered in overall Naval service at the time overrode what he thought was better for the greater good of his country, causing him to not re-enlist. I'm so proud of my brother's service to his country. He went on to earn his RN nursing degree and served out the rest of his years until retirement taking care of service veterans at the Lake City, FL USVA Hospital. Potentially (like all men and women who sign on the dotted line for enlistment), and going forward: My highest salutations and respect for each and every one.

OS on the USS Indy mid 1980's. If you're shopping for a Rating, Go OS. You'll need to be bright and good at schooling. When I went in, A School was in Damneck, VA Beach. NTDS School was there also. Wherever you're sent, apply yourself and learn as much as you can. When you get to the fleet (I don't know if they still do 3 month mess crank) do your Qualifications right away and then get on top of the 3's and 2's. It's great duty; you'll man CIC, Bridge, Navigation and a few lookout posts. If you're working with a Recruiter, knuckle down on the ASVAB exam. Score as high as you can so that you'll be able to choose from the better Rates.

The Fishing Ginger aka TFG yes I’m sorry but that disqualifies you from the Navy. If you had a shore only billet, meaning you just work for The Navy in an office, it really shouldn’t disqualify you, but it’s not possible on a ship, and with rare exceptions the Navy doesn’t offer ONLY work%in-an-Office-on-shore Jobs. An example would be working for the Navy at the National Security Agency, writing code at a keyboard all day. You are REQUIRED to stay on shore the entire time you have the job. I’ve even read articles arguing that those Navy Cyber Jobs should have different medical requirements than the rest of the Navy, that very talented software engineers who have diabetes, epilepsy, whatever should still work for the Navy. But that’s not the way it is now.which is too bad because there is no doubt an entire pool of very intelligent, talented Americans who miss out on Navy Service.
