My grandads boat was the u190 Surrendered in Halifax Canada
@grimstitchfactory46834 жыл бұрын
The U190 surrendered 14 May 1945 at Bay Bulls, Newfoundland. In June it was taken to St John's and then, to Halifax. U-190 was formally commissioned into the Royal Canadian Navy on 19 May. Her first assignment, in the summer of 1945, was a ceremonial tour of communities along the St. Lawrence River and Gulf of St. Lawrence, with stops in Montreal, Trois-Rivières, Quebec City, Gaspé, Pictou, and Sydney. She then went to Halifax. U-889 surrendered in Shelburne, and a day later taken to Halifax. I have U-889's Kriegsmarine flag, an Iron Cross First Class (mostly likely taken from Kptlt. Friedrich Brauecker , and the U-Boat clock from U-889. These items came from a Vet of the Nova Scotia Highlanders, a reserve infantry regiment of the Canadian Army that was involved in the removal of many objects from U889.

@@grimstitchfactory4683 thats cool as hell man, you know the stuff. i live in st. john's and since childhood i have seen the periscope from u190 mounted atop a naval officer's club downtown, and been on bell island plenty times where uboats sunk iron freighters, in the museum on the island there are awards from fritz rolf ruggeberg, captain of u513 that torpedoed and sank two ships there in 1942. his granddaughter donated them. in the narrows of st. john's harbor there is the remnants of a net meant to keep torpedoes out of the harbor in wartime, pieces have been donated to the Crow's Nest officers club and elsewhere awesome burlap scarecrow masks!

The Germans knew it was coming to an end. I think they were pleased to be captured.

That is a type IX Uboat, they were able to cross the Atlantic and operate in American waters.

I guess Naxzi U-Boats were a special North Atlantic division of the Kriegsmarine. I also like how the background music is "As the Caissons Go Rolling Along," the U.S. Army song, for U-Boat surrenders.

i recall reading about some confusion revolving around some ships displaying a black flag during surrender. Apparently a black flag can represent Mourning and was apparently used instead of a white flag in some situations.
@yannickawan3394 Жыл бұрын
There may be other reasons for the black flags but I read in two books (one by Buchheim, author of Das Boot, the other by Hirschfeldt (U-boat radio operator on U234 and U 109) that the Allies ordered that a black flag had to be set as part of the surrender procedure for U-boats in the radio message that went out ordering the remaining boats to surrender. This was apparently despised by the crews as a black flag was seen by them as something only pirates would set, and therefore, humiliating. Allied personnel that were not aware of this order would occasionally interpret it as a final provocation by the German crews, however, also connecting the black flags as pirate symbolism. Hirschfeldt went further and described how his captain went so far and requested that the German wartime flag could be honorably lowered from the flagpole before the American flag was set when the U-234 was surrendered at sea to an American destroyer. The Americans agreed to this but then the Germans also used that occasion and quickly ripped off the black flag and threw it overboard which they were not meant to do. Buchheim mentioned that the black flag was seen as odd as white would have been the appropriate color, furthering the idea that the black flags were unusual, suspecting also the pirate ascociation...

I know the title of the song it's from the movie Victory about a soccer game between the Allies and the German soccer team.

Dommage que le U-Boot n'a pas été gardé en Nouvelle-Écosse pour le faire visiter aux touristes comme musée de guerre. It is unfortunate that U-Boot was not keep at Shelburne for showing to the tourists as war museum.

Wrong department, The song is The Caissons go rolling along, which is from the US Army. The song after is not the USMC marching song, it's something played during WW2 (think it might be British).
