I think condoms might have been used at times on rifle barrels. But I think the reason people believe that condoms were used all the time on rifles was because many of the soldiers and the government didn't want to admit to the American people that the soldiers were having a lot of sex. This was a time when society was extremely conservative when it came to sex. Many of the soldiers having sex in Europe were married, and many more were young men that didn't want to admit to family that they were having premarital sex.
@denusklausen36855 ай бұрын
I think the real answer is that the people who were saying in the comments that the condoms must have been used on the barrel of the gun were all Americans who have seen that practice in later wars. The reality is that in WW2 if some people did do that, it wasn't widespread and again the main use of the condoms were for protected sex.

And, as still a Minnesota guy, I have many times slipped a balloon or even a piece of electrical tape over my rifle muzzle when hunting in winter. Accidentally getting a wad of snow down a muzzle when in the pine trees, or dipping a muzzle into the snow can be a catastrophic event if it freezes and restricts the firing pressure.

I dont have enough experience with weapons to know how much of this is a serious risk, and how much is just excessive safety. People fire weapons underwater with no issues, so I dont exactly wee how a few drips of water, or a little fragment of ice would be particularly dangerous. The causes that people have ascribed to their weapon exploding may not be confirmed if an investigation is made on that weapon by an expert.
@danirizary69265 ай бұрын
@@CrocodileTear A a gunsmith I can speak to this point. Some weapons can be fired underwater, and are even tested/rated for it (primarily sidearms with a couple exceptions), but a barrel full of water isn't the same as one with just a little bit, as the pressure isn't equal. A drop of water/ice/snow in the bore becomes an uncompressable obstruction that just can't be moved out of the way fast enough. This often creates a small bulge, often ring shaped, the barrel bursting is extremely unlikely to impossible. A condom on the muzzle wouldn't do anything to help in this situation. They're just too loose. Functionally the condom would only prevent debris from entering, which was better accomplished with a small piece of tape over the muzzle. To add to the confusion, in the 1980s in the USA they used to sell "barrel condoms", which IIRC were repackaged finger cots, and was inspired by war movies.

Yes, they were issued for STD's. But think about all of the cases of clap that the GI's had when they were in Naples, and you wonder if they indeed put them on their rifles instead of there "short arm".

I enjoy your videos and agree with your assessment. Condoms were provided to prevent STDs, just as they were in the 70's when I entered service. I think any use on the muzzle of a weapon is a convenient solution to a potential problem but not really necessary.

Thanks for including my evidence. With the rainy/muddy conditions of North Eastern France in the fall of 1944, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a condom and few more guys used them in this way.

I recall seeing the film ‘The big red one’ (Lee Marvin) - soldiers before landing on the beach were advised to put condoms on the end of their rifles. Too lazy to get a still from the film for proof but perhaps another viewer could concur.

I know that they were occasionally used this way in the Vietnam War, one book a veteran wrote documented this use fairly clearly but i doubt it was ever anything more than a field expedient solution. I personally feel they would get shredded far too easily to have this be a common thing.

Hi Crocs. I’m sure there’s a scene in the movie The Big Red One with Lee Marvin where the troops landing on the beaches in Italy or N Africa put “rubbers” on the end of their rifle muzzles to prevent water/sand getting into their barrels? But I agree, that wasn’t their stated aim, but to protect from STDs

Just found this in the internet regarding the film I mentioned earlier ‘the big red one’ I copied and pasted a small part: Fuller throws in little details that make the movie feel authentic. Things like the condoms on the rifle barrels, salt peter in the food to lower libido, and an “appearance” by “Axis Sally”.

You can find dozens of articles about how "common" it was for condoms to be used on rifles during WWII, but not one single one of them will show you a period document or photo to prove it.

Hey CT, to iterate, my dad who was there, said occasionally guys would put a condom on a barrel muzzle to protect from rain/snow. Those were initially all Midwest guys from the USA in north Africa. So it made sense. No, it was never a 'policy' and condoms were for what we thought they are. As a medic, he said when he went through personal effects, he would throw away condoms and wallets if they had a 'condom ring' showing on them so that the family would not see that. What intrigues me is the pictures the other viewers found. I thought I'd seen every WW2 footage there was. Are there other 'repositories' you can let us know about? My dad was Army medic 34th division. Went to North Africa on the HMS Broke, shrapnel wounded at conception of the battle of Monte Casino.
@CrocodileTear10 ай бұрын
There are basically an infinity of possible repositories for WWII materials: old pictures in a drawer, collections in various institutions that nobody has looked at, etc. So many more pictures will come to light in the future I believe. The "condom ring" visible on the wallets is certainly an interesting detail.

There is so much world war 2 footage that most people never see. I saw a documentary about pictures and film from ww2 that most people never see, and it showed a ton of stuff I had never seen.
