I dont know about using condoms on rifle barrels but venerial disease has always been a problem in war. In the Civil War before condoms where readily available prostitutes often followed the army from battle field to battle field. They where ussually a short distance from the front line. VD was rampant on both sides. The last thing any army needs is casualities from sex. I read sometimes there where hundreds of prostituets following a few miles behind the army. It was probably very lucrative for the prostitutes and i would guess almost all where infected with crabs..syphillus and every other sexually transmitted desiese known to man
