I thought I was the only extreme history nerd out there.

They used to have Bund rallys in Irvington back in the 1930's. Yes there were a lot of Germans in Irvington back then.

Great stuff. It was important that you explained the background history….Treaty of Versailles….and how Hitler and Nazis were looked at differently in the ‘30’s, etc. Summer Bund Camps were looked upon by those who participated as fondly as the Hitler Youth Camps were in Germany. It was work, fresh air, skill training, patriotism, and outdoor fun. It’s almost impossible to recognize that period in that light when you look back through the lens of history and the horrible things that the Nazi’s and Hitler unleashed.

What happened during the 30's in Germany was the hitler youth. Obviously today that has a bad connotation, but back then it was very popular. The german pope was in the hitler youth. The hitler youth became so popular that it really was the inspiration for the start of the boy scouts in the USA!

Scouts began in UK in 1907 and in USA in 1910.

You are incorrect. The Boy Scouts of America was founded on Feb. 8, 1910. As for the Bellamy salute, and this is from Wikipedia, it originated in 1892 and was used by Italian Fascists and German Nazis in the 1920s and 1930s and although it was used to some extent in the United States, it became discouraged because school officials did not want to promote Fascism and as a result, the practice had ended by the beginning of World War ll. This has nothing to do with the Boy Scouts of America and the experience of being a Boy Scout. The Boy Scouts of America preceded these political ideologies by at least ten years. And there is a reason why we salute the flag in the manner that we do because it became government policy to enact a law of conduct that codified the etiquette of the manner of saluting the flag and displaying allegiance. This was done in 1942. All of this is thoroughly explained in Wikipedia under the term Bellamy salute.

THE HITLERYOUTHPROGRAM WASNOT THE INSPIRation for the Boy Scouts,it may have been the catalyst for its inception as an program, but the Boy Scouts have always been a promoter of AMERICA VALUES INNO WAY CONNECTED TO NAZIISM.
