At the start of this documentary the American narrator tells us that Nuremberg was “in ruins” but then at four minutes in historian Guy Walters tells us that Nuremberg came through WW2 relatively unscathed compared to most of the rest of Germany. Make up your mind.
10 күн бұрын
The city of Nuremberg was in ruins (as the narrator says), but the city's justice hall was intact (as Guy Walters says). Thus, both statements are correct. The building was chosen because: a) it was located in Nuremberg, a very symbolic city in the Nazy party's apparatus, and b) it was a big enough building for the massive undertaking that these trials were going to be.
@PaddyBaxter-ji8in10 күн бұрын
Both of these statements are only partially true. What they should have said is: “while the city of Nuremberg was largely in ruins, the Justice Hall was both intact and large enough for the purpose, and because the city, famous for Hitler’s rallies after 1933, had been so important to the Nazi regime’s propaganda machine and was known the world over, it was also the ideal location”. Or words to that effect.

Kind of ironic in a macabre sort of way, that the Soviets murdered FAR more than the Nazis did, yet are one nation presiding over the Nuremberg trials. As for the French, British and Americans, turning a blind eye to the Soviet atrocities, they should all be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. Before anyone is ready to criticise, I am NOT, REPEAT NOT defending the Nazis in ANY way, ok?!.

I agree. What's more is how quiet ALL of the Allies were about Japan's atrocities. To the point where even the Nazis were appalled when an ambassador told his superiors what was going on. But... Politics of the time didn't support doing a Nuremberg-type trial against Japan. China was going hard for Communism and we needed to reform Japan into an Ally, so none of it was reported in as widely as the Nazi crimes. As for Russia... Well, I think what it was doing to it's own people was less concerning to the West (in that moment at least) than what Nazis were doing to the rest of the world. That's my understanding at least.

Something about the whole Hess afair just doesn't make sense. Why lock him up for so long. He must have held information that no other nazis had. Whatever it was it was big. Why not declear him "guilty on all 4 charges, death by hanging"? There are soo many questions surrounding everything Hess. What is certain is that he was truely a national socialist. He was not after power or money. He lived to serve the reich and its leader. His story is one of the most fascinating of all the Nazi's because of the mountain of questions that surround his role. Him and Robert Ley who no one ever talks about. I believe he was very much in Hitler's inner circle for several reasons. 1. In soooo many photo's of Hitler, Robert is (more than any other nazi) in the background somewhere. 2. In Joseph Goebbels diary's he is always mentioned. Either Goebbels and Ley needing to meet with Hitler about something. Hitler and Goebbels agreeing with Ley about something. Goebbels needing a private word with Ley about something to do with Hitler, Ley staying at the burghoff with Hitler. He's just mentioned alot for someone not so much in the documentarys.
