After landing in Beirut after dark in Nov 1972 our family was separated into two taxis which immediately raced off in different directions at high speed. My father was extremely shaken and tense, worried that we were being kidnapped to be held hostage for ransom. When our taxi arrived at the hotel he didn’t express relief until the other taxi arrived at the hotel a couple of minutes later with my mother and younger brothers. The taxi drivers then had an animated conversation as a porter gathered our bags. The porter had noticed how nervous my father was and informed him that the taxi drivers were brothers and were prone to compete, racing each other to their destinations when their fares were both headed to the same place. The taxi drivers settled their wager as we watched in understanding, all of us chuckling about it.

@2:30:38 Damien Lewis says those foreign fighters were there because they were driven by their belief in the Taliban's mission. To that I say BS,, they were nothing more than mercenary's brought in by the Taliban for money. They were fighting for $25 to $50 a day and provided weapons many did not know how to effectively use. Local National fighters,, most were fighting because the Taliban threatened their families and villages. Yes, they did receive minimal/basic training but in a fire fight they mostly pointed and fired. As a civilian construction contractor I was in Iraq 2006 thru 2009 in Baghdad and Al Qaim, Anbar Province and in Afghanistan 2009 thru 2012 in first Tarin Kowt, Uruzgan Province then in Lashkar Gah, Helmand Province. I was told by many locals the majority of Al Qaeda and Taliban were PAID mercenary fighters brought in from Iran and other middle eastern countries.
