Great game from 81/82 regular season, rivarly between Celtics and 76ers in its best years. Larry Bird and Andrew Toney going at it in this unreal duel, Spectrum crowd really was a lucky one.
Larry Bird: 29 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, 12/14 FG, poster dunk over Caldwell Jones!
Andrew Toney: 38 points in 26 minutes, 13/27 FG, 4/7 3PT, Toney set Spectrum records for points in a quarter (25) and three pointers made in a quarter (four).
''Boston Strangler'' only two weeks before this game scored career high 46 points against LA Lakers, you can watch highlights of that game on my channel.
Larry had a lot of help in Robert Parish (37 points, 21 rebounds, 5 blocks), Dr.J scored 28 points with some great moves also.
Celtics won the game 123:111.

Andrew Toney went to USL in Lafayette, La. He graduated college in 3 years. He went to graduate school at USL to stay eligible for his Senior year. Andrew's last college game at USL was a home game against U. of Minnesota in the NIT. By the end of the first half, Minnesota was kicking our butts. Andrew brought USL back in the second half but ended up losing in a close game. Leading the Minnesota front court was Kevin McHale. They played against each other the following year as rookies in the NBA.

This was the best DUNK of Birds career. Came down with some AUTHORITY over 7'1" Caldwell Jones. Via satellite I saw every Celtics game for 3 seasons, 84-86. 3 MVPs for Mr. Bird & 2 Championships. The most exciting aspect of seeing Bird play was knowing he would do something spectacular every night. It was usually every quarter. For someone tagged as "slow", he was amazingly quick at getting position for shots & rebounds. Was the absolute best at using fakes & being able to shoot w/ either hand.

As a Celtics fan I can honestly say Andrew Toney was unstoppable. He torched my Celts time and again. The central reason DJ was brought in was to slow down Toney. It worked! Thank God. Otherwise, the Celts do not get thru the Sixers '84-'85. Big respect for Toney. Before injuries wreaked havoc, Toney was a dynamite player... A scoring machine, if you will.

I'm a philly fan. I'm glad other fans appreciate him. People forget his career was tragically cut short. He sustained foot injuries around 84. Sixer management didn't believe he was really hurt and they ruined his career. His legacy should have been greater. He would have been a HOFer. A Toney, Barkely, Malone, Cheeks core could have challenged the Celtics and Pistons. Plus they had the #1 pick in 86 which was Brad Daugherty but traded it for garbage. Mismanagement ruined that team. The Sixers should have continued to challenge throughout the 80's.

@@Rvench I watched him play a great deal and remember him coming into the NBA after his stint in the ABA. From the advance pub, I thought he was going to be the Second Coming. I was amazed at how poor of a shooter he was when he came to the NBA, and although his mid-range jumper improved over the years, to say that he was a "great mid range" shooter is laughable. He was a great leaper, yes indeed, and a great player around the basket or on the open floor. He was never a great rebounder despite his jumping ability--Malone and others carried the rebounding load for Philly during those years. As for being clutch, I could think of numerous players during the years that he played that I would rather have the ball with the game on the line, largely because of his suspect shooting. If he got the ball late, teams could pack it in on defense and force him to shoot it. Sorry, but you are wrong on almost all counts. He was a great player, but only because of his ability to finish, and not much more.

Amazing number of hall of famer's on the court at the same time! Toney could really shoot. FG% of about 52% as a 2 guard when defenses were given more room for hand checking and physical play. Steph Curry is MVP at shooting guard and shoots about 48%. Bird shot at about the 5:45 mark...Wow is right! As great as Lebron and Curry are, I don't think any of today's teams have the depth to beat the Celtics, 76er's and Lakers teams of the early 80's.

+vdogg43 Steph Curry is the best shooter in NBA history, with the quickest release in NBA history, and his range is virtually unlimited. He's also an amazing ball handler, great passer, and has the mindset of an assassin. There is no era in the NBA where he's not a superstar. It's silly to think otherwise.
@adrielmoody
@adrielmoody 8 жыл бұрын
+Johnny 34 The 80's era was the most physical in NBA history. Flagrant fouls were rarely called and I can't recall anyone every getting tossed for a hard foul. As great as Steph Curry is, you can't survive that era without some sort of edge. He is as talented as anyone but he would have to live on the outside because being bumped and pushed takes him out of his game. Delladova proved that if they allow someone to play him physical he is almost completely ineffective.
@Johnny-xj5qu
@Johnny-xj5qu 8 жыл бұрын
The 80's was the decade that had more 25 ppg scorers than any in NBA history. If defense was so tough, why did so many people in the 80's score with more ease? Delladova bothered Steph for like 2 games, he's nothing to Steph now.

Right! Remember that all 4 games were close till the last couple minutes. Clint Richardson might have had his career night in game one, and maybe that’s why Toney wasn’t nailing everything. Similar to Bird & Magic AT could seemingly turn on his “Bionic Switch “ when clutch play was needed. Also helped that Worthy & McAdoo were hindered by injuries. I’m a Sixers fan but that Showtime carnival was a rare assembly of unbelievable talent. Their bench had 4-5 players that might kick in 30+ at any time, if a starter didn’t play up to par. Tough & agree. I would however say a team of 5 Toneys could beat or tie them. But you & know would not NBA would protest and say,” You cannot assemble a team without an earthling on the roster; completely unfair “😁🤣

@TonyinMBSC8669
@TonyinMBSC8669 9 жыл бұрын
Simple.....He didn't travel. Watch the play closely. Bird gets the outlet pass from Parish, one dribble, passes it to Henderson. Bird gets the ball back, takes one dribble, two steps and dunks it. Perfectly legal play!

celtics were always better than the sixers during this period maybe if dr.j was 5 or 6 years younger than he was that might of helped also sixers had horrible low post players at this time also didn't help either

0:49, did this sixers announcer just say "take that Larry Bird"? Larry totally took it to the defense and slammed it down. Does the announcer think it's significant that the shot was contested?
@georgemorley1029

I think he means "take that, FROM larry bird" but the way in which he says it, it could easily be taken to mean "you take THAT, larry bird".

It has no audio at that spot. My guess from seeing that play on other videos is that the announcer said "Take that! Larry Bird...." and the rest of that sentence was cut off by the next clip.

Doesn't matter if you're jumping from outside the 3 point line. Venture to say his degree of difficulty was higher having to release it like that than your standard set shot, or fadeaway.

What numbers are you talking about Larry is 6'9 in his early 20's Doc was 6'6 in his early 30's in 82 if talk numbers Doc 30,000 and 10,000 rebounds so he has more points on less shot attempt and has more boards the only number is the same is titles 3 Mvp's Doc 4 Larry Legend 3 when was peaking Doc was declining and still dunking on him Bird is great but compare them isn't fair because Doc only attempted 20 shots per game once in his Nba career Bird was the 1st scoring opt on his team plus Doc won more head to head battles so says Basketball Digest .

June Stevens Dr J is one of the most if not the most overrated player in the NBA’s 50 greatest players list. He had no left hand, couldn’t shoot outside 12’. And most of those numbers you are talking about were from his ABA days.

NOOOO, he got a dribble in between a double (2) step. There's another camera angle out there somewhere. Believe me, I thought the same as you until I seen it from a different angle. Pfffft to think that Bird would travel is disrespectful to his game. haha. Has he ever been called for travel? I don't know. I've never seen it.
