unlike Jordan, bird was a team first player. The nba was dying at the close of bird and Johnson, it needed new blood, something to bring it back. After meetings with the sports media on coverage of the nba games, whom ever was the next star couldn’t be talked about in a negative way, the had to build him with the fans. Thus Jordan came on the seen. He wasn’t first choice but he came out on top. He however unlike bird, was a totally selfish player and things had to go through him, thus the pippin, Rodman and and others who stayed in Chicago for the team. Jordan and the bulls couldn’t win. The bulls had to draft and use free agency, and trades to finally get a team built so the bulls to win. The last dance movie was set ti make him look goog, still at popping and others objection. On a talk show his coach was as the question, who really was the best player, his answer, if I just want to win a game I want Mike, if it’s a game I have to win, I want bird. What does that tell you? Even his own coach admits in his own way, if I have to win I want bird, their stats are almost the same, Jordan played two more years than bird. Bird played as long as his body would let him force. He missed games ever year, couldn’t sit on the bench, had to sit on the floor. He had to be at games and hour earlier so the trainers could get his body worked out to where he could tolerate the pain, no one in the nba played with a body long gone from playing condition like bird. Bid’s life was basketball, he looks so depressed and unhappy after having to give up playing. Go back, interview players on his team and the other nba teams and take a player vote on who the goat really is from their era, you just might be suprised.

But besides being able to score at will, rebound double digits, pass lights out, team defense - he excelled at making his team that much better. Basketball is a TEAM sport. Bird always elevated the team's play AND made sure that everyone on the court was involved in the game. He was an unselfish distributer, lethal shooter, had a killer mindset, had Court Sense (the ability to see/know where everyone was on the court at all times), Drive and a passion for the game. He was also willing to play hurt, best example was when he fractured his cheek vs Indiana. In spite of the pain he returned to the game in the 3rd quarter and DOMINATED the game leading the Celtics to the win. For all these reasons as well as all the facts stated here Larry Legend is the GOAT. Sure, other people ARE more athletic, but you beat people with brains, passion and hard work. One final thing, every time the Bulls With Jordan faced Larry and the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals - they LOST to the Celtics. This in spite of Jordan having in different years games where he scored 62 and 63 points. In fact, in those games Bird scoring in the 30s and 40s led the Celtics to the win both times. Something to see. Something to reflect on.

The biggest problem we have is that no one has actually defined "GOAT". What is it that gives an individual that quality? Team play? Bill Russell with 11 rings. No one else comes close. Individual play? Probably Jordan, especially after this year's playoff 'sweep'. But Jordan was swept twice in the playoffs...pure offensive numbers? That would mean Chamberlain. But if you look at the entire spectrum of a person's game, offensive, defensive, team results, and how other teams react to that player then Bird has to be in that conversation. He could get his shot off against anyone. He was ambidextrous so his left was just as lethal as his right. He was a 'free-range' defender. All over the court and took the ball away from many unsuspecting opponents, especially from the back. His passes were legend. He had a three point shot better than ANY forward (OK, maybe not better than Dominique) and better than most guards. Winner of first 3 contests in a row. Typically against guards. Then look at the averages of his teammates. Each year they got better. Better shot percentage, better free throw percentage, and in 1986, better home court percentage. Can anyone else claim that? Today's NBA is a different game, for sure. Guys play 'street ball' rather than 'team ball'. Not as great to watch. It seems to be about who can make the greatest dunk, not who wins the game, or makes his team better. Too bad. Lots of great players, but few great teams. There will always be disagreement about the 'GOAT'. But Bird will always be in the conversation when knowledgeable people have the discussion.

I don't know how many forwards could pass as creatively and instinctively as Larry. The compilation of such assists from Larry always requires a slowmo replay to see and admire..behind the back, between the legs, over-the-top, no-looks, around the waist, tip-ins, baseball passes, etc. I have yet to see similar compilations of these many creative passes from any forward..even from guards except Magic. They were just mind-blowing. The 1987 steal (from Isaiah)/assist ( to DJ) against the Pistons has got to be a top 3 greatest plays (in both assist and steal category) in NBA history..and top play if the combined effort is another category. Of course, the late great DJ shares the glory in a play-off win that had a tremendous importance. Even coach Nolan, in a tribute speech, and narrating a sample of a similar pass exclaimed, " oh, did you see that pass from Bird.." And Nolan was describing that feat when Larry was still in college.

For those that think Larry Bird was not as good as he really was. This comment is for those whom never had the chance to see him play. At that time it was not about the individuals stats it was about the win. But if you need some stats here you go: Here are some of Larry Bird's notable career achievements and statistics: Three-time NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986); Two-time NBA Finals MVP (1984, 1986); Three-time NBA MVP (1984-86); 12-time NBA All-Star (1980-88, 1990-92); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88); All-NBA Second Team (1990); Three-time All-NBA Defensive Second Team (1982-84); NBA Rookie of the Year (1980); NBA All-Rookie Team (1980); Three-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion (1986-88); Career-high in points: 60 (March 12, 1985) -- tied for franchise record with Jayson Tatum; Named NBA Coach of the Year (1998); and Named NBA Executive of the Year (2012). Larry Bird, was the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 achievement, and one of two players to achieve the feat in multiple seasons. Career averages: 24.3 points per game 10.0 rebounds per game 6.3 assists per game 88.6% free throw percentage 49.6% field goal percentage 37.6% 3-point percentage Now we can't forget that Bird famously played with two injured ankles and a notoriously cranky back that forced him to lay down on the floor during practice breaks. He likely used these crutches after season-ending foot surgery just six games into the 1988-89 season

Point guard Larry Bird? He was power forward and small forward. Until Kevin McHale move to the starting lineup. The point guard was Nate tiny Archibald.

Might surprise some, but analyze the stats and he beats Michael Jordan even in his last season.
@Wallyworld30 Жыл бұрын
I just checked and Jordan had a 4 year stretch that her PER was over 31 each season. Larry Bird's BEST single season was 27.8. Michael Jordan for his career averaged 27.9. So average Jordan over his career was better than Peak Larry Bird. Both great players though but c'mon Jordan is great of all time.

@innosanto Жыл бұрын
@@Wallyworld30 Bird would play great even without scoring points. It is not about the stats. He could make a block in pne critical moment amd decide rhe game. He is the goat because he is the player with more critical moves in games. Bird was using space, speed or pause, morale managment of other players and movement management of other playeds to paly the game. Stats do not reflect. Watching the games doss.
