I loved watching NBA in the 80s. Nowadays everybody’s talking about the GOAT (player). It’s a team game. Not an individual one. Bird was a fantastic and exciting team player. It’s no wonder Bird and Magic revitalized the NBA. Their teams were fun to watch.
@SDesWriter2 жыл бұрын
The GOAT thing is silly. Different positions had such wildly different aspects important to their job. MJ was the best scorer, best defender (for a guy who was also important to the offense), and best clutch player ever at the position. But was he "better" than a 35 year old Wilt almost putting up a quadruple double on Kareem in game 6 of the championships? Was he as unstoppable as Kareem in the paint when you needed a basket? Was he as good as getting his team mates involved as Stockton or Magic? People had different skills that made them special and that's why the GOAT talk is silly unless you're talking about positions or specific talents. No better passer or clutch scorer at the SF than Bird. Even Kobe couldn't have made that Celtics team any better than they were with Larry.

There are also different eras in which the game was different. While Kareem did the sky hook, Shaq had a newer version of it, the jump hook, for example. GOAT is probably a flawed concept.

Larry had a lot of athletic ability but what made him great is his ability to make a shot from anywhere. If you meet him at the three point line, he just took a step back, if you came out with him, he just took another step back. That would open up the inside for easy buckets.
@davidclaytonfreeman33063 жыл бұрын
I think the comments are about the relative athleticism to other players of his time and position. He was athletic enough to be a professional basketball player so he's already in the top 1% of humans but he was slow and couldn't jump so it's the fascination of how could he be one of the best to ever play? And he was without question. The difference his teammates and other greats always point to is his work ethic, leadership and basketball IQ. The same vocational traits that propel every great leader no matter the job. You have to be born with natural talent in the field you choose and identifying that early is key to greatness but those are honed by hard work. Then leading others to follow in any team situation requires a whole new set of abilities. One person holding all that is a generational freak of nature.

In a hypothetical draft of all time, Bird would be the first pick. He would make EVERY other player better, no matter who. Best team player ever and on a par with Russell as a basketball mind. @andrewlim68163 жыл бұрын
He has a great understanding of how the game of basketball should be played and makes his team better. He relied on hard work, passion and fundamentals. He's not athletic and fast as some of his competitors. Literally played until his back quit on him. He can call his "shots" which I believe no other player until now has been able to do. One of the greatest players in the NBA. Larry Legend.

For LJB to overcome lack of athleticism he had to compensate with IQ, killer will, overthetop drive to win, court vision, and supreme mastery of game fundamentals. @@royrayburn1503 MJ had a LOSING record vs Bird...MJ was glad Bird retired quite early., Isaiah Could Never beat Bird until he had Dennis Rodman...and some luck...Bird is TOP 5 EVER....don't hate

I have been a Pro Sports Fan for over 6 Decades and when it comes to Pro Basketball I have to Pick Bird #1 when it comes to Power Forward! He is In My Mind the GOAT of That Position, Hands Down!

Thomas was a mediocre guard that played on the dirtiest team in basketball. Bird is at least in the GOAT conversation.

Its hard tonsay who is number 1. Jordan or Bird. Both played hurt, sick, it didn't matter they were playing. Both could still take over a game well below feeling 100%. Respect to both their will to win could beat all. Mind over matter. If you don't mind it don't matter

Ya know , people laughed at Larry Bird but Larry was ONE of ONLY a few people who made M.J. Work for his points. Larry Bird was NO Joke. I dont care if my caucasinon was plaid, the man COULD PLAY some BALL. NO he did not have the build of Michael or LeBron but he MADE Mike WORK for his points. I would pick him for my squad any day

Larry is the GOAT. Best talent that also shared the ball. no one could stuff him and Jordan never got the upper hand on him.

I rank Larry Bird 3rd all-time. Only behind Michael and Kobe. People know Larry as a legendary leader, shooter and scorer. But, Larry was very underrated as a rebounder, defender and passer.

Americans should be proud of having the best athletic basketball players in the world. Not greater than being A Competitive Beast on the court, inspiring the next generation, and being a pure gentleman off the court.

Larry and Dirk are both in my top 7 or 8 all time and they get routinely forgotten about. MJ Kobe Lebron Bird Hakeem Dirk KD Shaq Kareem Magic Oscar Not in any order just as they came to my mind. But Dirk and bird are definitely top 7

I loved to watch him play...just not against my Lakers or MJ. He was so irritating because you knew he was finishing with an effortless 25/10/5, but he also made all the right basketball plays at the right moments. Sickening, but wonderful at the same time. SMDH😞

If I was starting a team Bird would be in my starting 5. He could do it all he made his teammates better and he was a killer with the game on the line. His shot percentage was high great passer and a basketball genius. His career was cut short by injury, if his back wouldn't have gave out imagine what his numbers would look like
