A lot of the time it's positioning, today's centres are terrible at establishing a good position to set up a post up move. One of the reasons why I feel like the big man game has diminished over time is because of the zone defence. When teams line up out of the 2-3 or even the 2-1-2, centres and power forwards find it difficult to turn baseline or even drive into the key. This defence however only eliminated the power play of big men but in theory it shouldn't affect the quicker centres since the zone is subject to how an offence moves around in those zones. Teams should be investing more in the triangle offence or just the post game in general so they can open up shooters on the perimeter or draw in much needed fouls.

The zone defense rule makes it much easier to defend the post. It's brought the bigs out of the block, resulting in more jump shooting bigs. That's one of the reasons why centers today don't have the moves like Hakeem. I didn't realize that until Reggie pointed it out in one of the Open Court episodes, but it makes sense.

I think Hakeems post work is too advanced for a player like Dwight or Blake... they needed to learn the simple moves and tricks from someone who strictly relied on dunks and layups... Blake is going the right way, he figured out that post isn't really his thing and he worked on his jumpshot...now he mostly shoots or drives. Dwight is still mostly a defensive presence, sadly.... but he gets good number of points every now and then. He certainly looks good in the Hawks uniform.

Barkley probably did the most with the least amount of abilities. He was 6'4, out of shape and couldn't jump high at all. He wasn't that athletic either. But he knew how to use his body unlike anyone else. The amount of rebounds and points he scored is insane with the abilities he had. If shaq stayed in shape and focused only on basketball he'd be the goat and it wouldn't be close. He'd have 8+ season mvp's, 8+ rings, 1st in career points, top two in career rebounds and points.

@@itsmeitstrue I never said Barkley wasn't athletic. But he wasn't the most athletic player ever. He used his size, power and wide frame to score and rebound. Its the reason the 5 second rule was put into place. Because Barkley would just back defenders down from way out to the rim lol.

For me, I don't think the zone really made a significant difference in the post. Yes it has some effect but not enough to drive away the bigs in the NBA. What I think is, and this was also mentioned in an Open Court episode, no one teaches kids how to do post moves these days. They go out the court, learn how to dunk, shoot 3, do fancy stuffs but no fundamentals. Another thing is, injuries. Yao Ming, Bogut, Greg Oden, good examples of top picks never panning out due to injuries.
@starkk1911 жыл бұрын
and i also think that the big man won't be back soon. The rise of point guards in the league could only mean more kids will be imitating these guards and therefore less big man who can do decent post moves. Heck Kobe does better post moves than almost all big man today. That's how watered down the center position is these days. Once Timmy and KG retires, I think we won't be seeing good post moves by big men in a long time. Although Lamarcus shows some good moves occasionally.
@stygianmessiah11 жыл бұрын
thing is point guards can rise.but the only way miami is gonna lose is to lose inside.i think,or hope that a great center would appear that can hit his free throws(cause this is important unless you are shaq).and when he starts winning alot, the big men would rise again
