BBALLBREAKDOWN I did however noticed that Drew prefers the 1-2 step in his exercises. Also, in his first to exercises, he stresses that he doesn't want a player to bring his or her ball down, so no dip. His drills are great, but I hope he doesn't focus on not dipping the ball...

Hmm great concepts and philosophies from that man! I've always focused on the "staying square" style, with feet pointing towards the rim and too many specific mechanics. Never really focused on the "stabilizing my core" aspect. I really like his approach cause he's not stopping guys from having their comfortable leg motion or elbow in/out or anything like that. Interesting stuff

In the early 70's I took a biomechanics course in college. Probably the most important principle in skill improvement is keeping your head and shoulders slightly forward and absolutely STILL. It's called the pike position in gymnastics. Drew is calling it stabilizing yourself. By keeping your head and shoulders still (stable) your brain doesn't have to adjust for extraneous motion. No adjustment means greater accuracy. Batters in baseball, golfers at the tee, and tennis players stroking the tennis ball - all keep their head still.

I changed my shot from two motion in my early 10's from one motion fast release in my late 10's, I am a short player(1.68m) so, slow mechanics are not reliable for me. I'm working on getting an insane arc and even more speed now, I'm 24, I missed more shots at the beginning, but now I'm getting back to good %. Needs lots of visualization and of course practice the same movement over and over again.

I appreciate the experience of Drew Hanlen. I follow him on twitter and have watched many of his videos. Also, I am thrilled to see on court demonstrations of advanced concepts. I do believe that the ten toes to the rim emphasis causes confusion with kids and those who have adapted proshot on your previous videos suggestions. He makes a concession for those who turn, but as an NBA trainer, I would expect him to realize that almost every quality shooter turns at least 11 O'Clock! Otherwise, great stuff! Keep the great on court demos coming! Thanks!

When I take standstill jumpers, I always fade slightly away, and use my left leg a little more than my right. I only do this when I'm wide open, and I've done some real statistics (trust), and have found that when I fade slightly, I make more baskets then when I don't. If you look at Chris Bosh's shot, he always slightly fades away but I don't do it nearly as much.

Coach Aaron J Yes! The idea of bringing the ball to your shooting hand is another drill I'll release with Tony Frecerro of Triple Threat this week. You'll love it!
@ReCharredSigh10 жыл бұрын
coach nick, it seems easier to do a dribble pull-up when you're bouncing the ball from your weak hand, because it's going to be on the side when you gather the ball naturally. however, if you're doing it from your strong hand, it doesn't feel as natural, because your shooting hand will be on the side, even if you believe in the index finger release paul hoover talks about. any tips for a dribble pull-up from your strong hand?

Hey coach I have a question about this video. .... A few months ago you worked with "proshot" and they teach the sweep and sway but this shooting coach from "pure sweat" teach straight up and down so I'm a bit confused on which to use?
@bballbreakdown10 жыл бұрын
Nathanael Spencer The focus wasn't as much on legs in this drill - it was about the core - so I totally understand why it might be confusing. We did mention the sway for a second, and it would be a natural progression out of building the core muscles and finding initial balance with upper body... make sense?
@makeme493710 жыл бұрын
Hey coach, I'm much more comfortable shooting with the sweep and sway in practice, but I always find it hard to use it in games because I feel like it makes me jump toward the defender, giving myself less space to shoot. So in games I don't do it as much as i should. Do you have any advice on how I can use the sweep and sway without getting so close to my defender that it's much easier for him to contest my shot? Do you even recommend the sweep and sway when shooting off the dribble?
@CrisMadla10 жыл бұрын
If you listen it says this drill is for core balance and progresses into the sweep And sway to maintain that balance....
@theartofcompetition59657 жыл бұрын
just flop when you land and act like he fouled you :p
@robertblount13776 жыл бұрын
You should not sweep and sway. Stabilizing your core means you are not sweeping and swaying. Staying stabilized with no movement of your head and shoulders will make you more accurate because there is less motion to adjust for. You take the exact same shot every time. This is my one BIG disagreement with BballBreakdown.
@orenlevi43296 жыл бұрын
Honestly @BBALLBREAKDOWN, I don't get it. I must have missed it when you published it, and I know Hanlen has been getting some well deserved hype lately, but he is teaching something that directly conflicts what you teach, and yet there's absolutely zero pushback. Why? Isn't it a conversation? From anything we know about your mantras about shooting (which I share with you, btw) you do not think jumping "Up-and-Down" is healthy - focusing on it is mechanical, not at all frequent among top shooters (maybe Klay, but thats it), and most importantly it negates the "Sway" so there's all this pent up tension in the shoulders. This is me quoting you directly. Why not talk about it? Hell, argue even, it's great TV and we all might learn something. Are you agreeing with his training? Do you recommend it? If not, don't you think the video should reflect it, at least a little bit? I love Drew, but he is wrong on this. But the bigger point is that I felt you put your own thoughts on shooting aside for this one, and it's a weird choice in my mind.
@robertblount13776 жыл бұрын
Oren, you are right. The techniques are opposite. Drew's technique is sounder mechanically. Sounds like your main concern is that Drew's technique causes tension in your shoulders. Here is the key. Stabilize yourself. But when extending upward or jumping on your shot, don't use your shoulders to help you leave the floor. USE ONLY YOUR LEGS to jump. Allow your torso to rise only because its attached to your legs at the waist. Your torso is along for the upward ride. There will be no tension. I've made some comments above. Take a look at some to get a fuller sense for what I am saying.
@msherwood696 жыл бұрын
Drew teaches the sway, go to around 6:50. He's only discussing the basics, which is when you need to learn to go up vertically. Even with the sway, only your legs are landing forward, your head doesn't actually move from the original spot much

This isn't a good video, Coach Nick! I know you are aware of the Pro Shot Shooting System, bc you made a few videos on his channel together. It should be pretty clear that The Turn is a key element for good shooters and so is the sweep and sway, which was mentioned as a side note in the video. But Drew talked about not turning and jumping straight up and down, which clearly isn't the right thing to do!
@bballbreakdown10 жыл бұрын
MRxPhilx1 Drew teaches The Turn - that wasn't covered in this breakdown. And he isn't against the sway, we were hyper focused only on the core for balance - but that will lead to sway the more comfortable they get. To paint abstract, you need to learn how to do the Still Life first.
@MRxPhilx110 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the explanation, Coach Nick! I guess that makes sense the way you explained it now, wasn't quite sure about those things after watching the video. Other than that, keep up the good work and the nice content!
@MRxPhilx110 жыл бұрын
I heard that part and because of that I said it was mentioned as a side note in my first comment. But I didn't think it was so clear to everybody, so I felt it wasn't the ideal "explanation", I guess
@419nigerianprincess810 жыл бұрын
The video is good for jump shots but it's bad for lay ups, I recommend landing with my two feet and not tippy toes on lay ups cuz it could increase the chance of an ankle sprain if some player accidentally put his foot there, see what happened to Drose against Cleveland when he tried to land tippy toe as Kyrie's was there!
@robertblount13776 жыл бұрын
This is a great video because Drew advocates no movement in your head and shoulders. Extraneous motion produces mistakes in execution - Biomechanics 101.

I would say it’s good basic advice but too choreographed. Larry Bird gave the best advice. The ball is going where your hands and feet are aimed, the rest is just a basic lack of fear of missing. That’s the difference. Real shooters have NO fear of missing.
