That’s not true at all, you clearly are too young to know who Darryl Dawkins was but he use to smash backboards in the 80’s. After him the NBA decided to construct something much more solid and after that they had absolutely no problem and let me tell you they had big time dunkers back in that era. Then Shaq showed up!! No player before or during his career demolished the backboards besides him so that should tell you everything. Next time just do the research before you post lies because other idiots will think you're telling the truth. Sorry for being tough on you, but I don’t like liars.

Yeah the excessive hanging on the ring (especially shifting your weight) is just bs. This entire video is a compliment to Wilt Chamberlain. There was not a nicer man to play basketball. Wilt Chamberlain played at 300 to 310 lb and 7 ft 2. He had a bench press over 500 pounds according to Arnold Schwarzenegger. He could have shattered every backboard in the league if he wanted to, but he had the good sense to hold back. His fade away jump shot and moves off the glass were an attempt to keep the game going, not to show off and stop the game with an equipment failure.

I remember seeing Shaquille's dunk in Phoenix Live, as it happened. This one didn't break the backboard, the goal just kind of collapsed backwards. Only six of these were NBA. Shaquille also shattered a backboard at a local gym on NBA Inside Stuff. Back in the old days, when very little basketball was televised, there was a player named Chuck Connors who destroyed two backboards... in the SAME game!

Ha-Ha, Chuck Connors retired early from the NBA, and with his rugged good looks, headed for Hollywood, getting his own TV series a couple of times, including "The Rifleman" and "Branded".

I like Jordan's the best, because he didn't break the glass from hanging on the rim, it was just the pure force of his dunk, flying high from the free throw line, he didn't hold on to the rim at all, he just shoved the ball in with pure force.

3:47 This O’Neal dunk is the most legendary of his dunks in my opinion, even though the backboard didn’t break. It’s like the backboard itself was afraid of shaq, and decided to back off and bow down to such a legend. Such a dominant force, and awesome too.

It shouldn’t surprise me that Jordon probably has the best broken backboard dunk in history, but I really expected Shaq to win this one. I can’t believe the poster of this video put it as 3rd best. Jordon jumps over a huge guy from one step past the free throw line, proceeds to fly through the air and dunk with one hand. He then then shatters the backboard raining glass on 4 opponents while he smoothly walks out the way. Every opponent is holding up their hands shielding their eyes and faces from the falling glass. I don’t know if that one can ever be topped.
