If you’re looking at it oprtimistically, the spurs added three rotation players, probably two starters. Paul pushes Jones to backup pg (48 minutes of capable pg play), Harrison Barnes pushes campaigney too the bench, Castle upgrades either your starters or your bench. Who knows how much that improves the team record in the west but they’re definitely better.

I could see OKC and Minnesota both going crazy in the regular season and then 11 teams all going between 40 and 46 wins, Dallas, Denver, New Orleans, Sacramento, Memphis, Houston, Pheonix, Golden State, Clippers, Lakers, and San Antonio!

I love what the Spurs did as a fan, they got a free upgrade at SF for this year. And the following year they will have expiring deals for Zach Collins/Harrison Barnes equal about 40m in salary, so if they wanted to bring in another big salary on or two role players on to the team, they have the expiring deals and the draft picks to make it happen. I could see them try to trade for Nic Claxton or another high level role player to put next to Wemby. Or they can continue to trade those expirings for bad contracts + draft picks to solidify the roster. Overall, they lost zero flexibility, while also pretending for the media they are trying to bring vets along next to Wemby. This is how you build intelligently

Spurs AND WEMBY have said multiple times that they are being patient with the rebuild. It's like these guys expect them to trade away all their assets in one offseason otherwise "they're tanking again."

I love Bontemps but I hate how he’s thinking the Spurs will be not that good next year. CP3 still played plus net rating basketball last year in a diminished role, he’s basically ancient, but I think he’s a perfect fit next to Wemby that can really elevate the team. The Spurs scouting and coaching has not changed for a long time and they’re the same guys that found diamonds in the rough in the draft and made them championship level players on the court. I wouldn’t underestimate Gregg Popovich, arguably the greatest coach ever. San An intentionally tanked last year, hence one of the reasons Wemby played sub-30 minutes per. If they really wanted to they would make the play-in. Their bottom guys might not be bonafide NBA talent, especially for a playoff team but you have a borderline superstar already in Wemby, you bring in finals-experienced vets, and you have arguably the greatest coach ever. If they can more about experience and being competitive than a slightly higher draft pick next year then I think they can be a 35-40+ win team, even in a loaded west, the Spurs have all-around good talent. Maybe not top of the league but at minimum should have average shooting, defense (probably top 10, especially with more Wemby minutes), ball movement, etc. I am a firm believer in the Spurs to make the play-in at minimum this year and the fact that Tim doesn’t see the potential and is preparing for the worst irks me. It’s not even being a realist because even in a loaded west that got better this offseason I still believe the Spurs are more likely to be a 9th seed than a 13th seed.

44:28 Patrick Williams was not a mistake. That’s a bad take by MacMahon. He probably thought two years ago Coby White was a mistake too. Patrick Williams has not even turned 23 yet and played only half of his eligible games so far in his career, there is still much time for him to develop. What would MacMahon do if he were in Karnisovas or Marc Eversley’s position? Let your 4th overall pick that was your fourth leading scorer behind three former all stars two years ago walk for nothing? That would look even worse. Even if PatWill does not improve whatsoever and has already reached his ceiling he’s still a great 3&D player in this league. 40% from three on over three attempts per game is still great, three attempts though simply cause Billy Donovan is not a young player’s coach and does not run the offense to get him any touches. And now with Caruso gone he’s the team’s best defender. For that kind of player, in this kind of market today a five-year 90 mill contract for a young player on a YOUNG REBUILDING team is good value, especially considering the contract is a diminishing one over the five years, giving more wiggle room for extensions and other players in Chi for the future. The Bulls have the money, this is the exact type of move the fans and organization wants and it makes sense to double down on Patrick Williams. You want to already give up on him in his third year offseason? MacMahon was wrong he’s not a mistake and that’s a good contract.

And not to mention Patrick Williams is an analytics darling on the defensive end. MacMahon and these guys need to look at that and actually watch the games, he shows amazing flashes attacking the rim, pulling up in the midrange, etc. Seriously though he’s younger than Ayo on that team by over a year, he’s not played enough, had enough touches and has been playing behind three former all stars and Coby White what do people want from him seriously? He’s efficiency is great for his age, he’s a smart player, he’s talented. Why would the Bulls let someone that fits the timeline that has great potential and is already a good contributor walk? A cheaper deal wouldn’t have worked for PatWill’s camp. As silly as it might seem he’s a cornerstone for this rebuild, and I’m tired of the public narrative that PatWill is bad. He suffers from being on a losing team that doesn’t get much coverage and having no name like LaMelo or Anthony Edwards or Devin Vassell. Even in his draft fourth was high for him and people didn’t recognize him like those other guys. He’s not the level player those guys are but he doesn’t get the same chances as them, so I wouldn’t speak on it and dismiss him until we see that actually happen since unlike those guys, he went into a competitive, non-rebuilding team playing behind vets scrapping for his production and his stats whenever he wasn’t injured. It’s sickening that even experts like the Hoops Collective pod has are victims and feed into these false public narratives about players, teams, contract.
