I have found that living anywhere near a big city is hot. The roads, parking lots, sidewalks just bake you. Even in the same small town I used to live in, one apartment had large lush trees, a grassy courtyard and a small parking lot. 1) My thought is there was an argument; he got angry and left the girl alive. Someone later took advantage when she asked for help. He returns and panics not knowing what happened. 2) Someone spoke to them and immediately marked him for a rube, convinced him to leave the young woman on his own and later took advantage. 3) He killed her, tried to hitch hike out of there and then went back to take the van. Guy is probably gator food by now so we may never know unless something conclusive comes from her examination.

@Aaron Digby I don't think the cops directly observed him slapping her. That is what bystanders reported. They noted marks on Brian and noted that she grabbed the vehicle's steering wheel causing them hitting the curve. Where I have issue is them not taking her into custody and charging her. Instead they explained to her how she needed to answer the question in order not to be taken into custody. Let her talk on herself and sort it out later. Even if she was released no one is going to penalize an officer given this outcome. She at least would have had a chance.
