BEST NEWS THEME EVER!!!!!! Sounds like it's from a movie. But then again it WAS composed by a movie composer (John Williams). Nice shot at the end with all the birds flying across with the final rise in the music and the one flying across at the very end and the soft melody.

I remember watching the news every night at 5:30 with Tom Brokaw. I believe everything he said and I always sat there at the end of the broadcast which ended with a picture of the Statue of liberty. It always made me feel so proud of being an American

King LA Me, too The NBA on NBC when Michael Jordan, Shaquille O'Neal, Hakeem Olajuwan, David Robinson, Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan RULED the Court and won Titles, Dateline NBC with Jane Pauley and Stone Philips, California Dreams and City Guys, just to name a few for NBC back in the 90's, NBA Inside Stuff with Ahmad Rashad, Julie Moran, Willow Bay and Summer Sanders and when the WNBA was on NBC with Sheryl Swoopes, Cynthia Cooper, Rebecca Lobo and Lisa Leslie The only thing that I look at on NBC nowadays are Sunday Night Football, Weekend Today and NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt and Lester is Da Man

I,ve always loved this classic NBC NIGHTLY NEWS (1985-2004)from the Tom Brokaw era although like most kids later teens & early adults NEVER CARED FOR THE NEWS UNLESS SOMETHING HISTORIC HAPPENED BAD 😞😔 OR 😊 GOOD! Anyway I remember when NBC NIGHTLY NEWS used to air on WMAR TV CH.2 when it was NBC from 1981-1995.Then of course NBC moved back to WBAL TV CH.11 while ABC moved from WJZ TV CH.13 to WMAR TV CH.2 & CBS moved from WBAL TV CH.11(1981-95)to WJZ TV CH.13!! In most of 5O of my 52 years living in Minnesota for 7 years & 43 years in Baltimore MD-I also loved hearing NBC NIGHTLY NEWS theme from 1977-79 the John Chancellor David Brinkley era & THIS THEME from the Tom Brokaw era & ABC,S WORLD NEWS TONIGHT THEME FROM 1978 the Frank Reynolds Max Robinson Peter Jennings era & OMG I CANNOT FORGET the Today Show theme from 1978-81 during the Tom Brokaw Jane Pauley era!!

9 years later and I think we're there. There was a John Williams concert in Edinburgh a few nights ago where they did all his movie themes (no TV themes sadly). Radio stations like Classic FM are getting a bit more popular than they were. Classical fans hate movie scores though, I think.

Usually the NBC closing theme would last about 15-20 seconds, only on a slow news day-once about every two or three weeks--would there be enough potential dead-air time to warrant playing a longer version of "The Mission".

I remember Me and My Mom watched NBC Nightly News With Tom Brokaw Weeknights on NBC. Then in 2010 We switched over to ABC World News Tonight. Tom Brokaw was Awesome and so was Brian Williams. The Current Anchor Lester Holt is Great too

@irish89055 ...yeah same...TV3 had the rights to NBC and 'The Mission', Usually the Friday evening news got the 'long close' and in New Zealand's case, used long shot scenery of the country and the main cities, (including, sadly now, a lovely shot of Christchurch Cathedral), finishing with an ariel above cloud shot of the sun going down behind Mt Cook, our tallest...Have written to TV3 to post it up but they've lost the video.

I love this theme of all the many I've listened to here in the states, sadly there is not time built in for long closes today. Even then it was rare, maybe once a week or two. Tom Brokaw was prob in the Washington studio that night. Yes, halcyon days, mid 90's... I miss them for many reasons, even if Clinton was president...

I don't know how many of the world was watching as noted by the announcer but I did every night and still do. I flip between all three networks.. not many people under 50 even watch the nightly News anymore and they're virtually 50% commercials now anyway

Cory, yes, true... and it's a shame all the ads now and little time for end music. on rare nights they do a limited commerical newscast, I'd like to see an hour broadcast as this half hour is the best concentration of news, though PR pieces now dominate last half.. but the affilates would never give up Inside Addition ect.. It seems to be winter in the one shot of DC from across the Potomac river. Some broadcasts originated from Washington esp on weekends at that time.. this is 95

NBC nightly news in the 90's was broadcast from Washington on the weekends and yes, no room for end music now. The nightly news is now about 50% commercials...What say you Brian Williams?

It had to be before they closed off Pennsylvania Avenue on May 20, 1995 b/c you can see cars driving in front of the White House from :27 to :36. And you're right on the winter too as you can see the bare trees by the Lincoln Memorial from :50 to 1:00. It could be a lot of stock footage just put together for a long closing. 1995 - those were the good ol' days in Washington.

not the weekend show, that show had different anchor name in title. this credit list is the ny "a" group (sadly most are gone now). this dc "b" deadroll credit bed was used when the brokaw show originated from dc.

They cram that half hour with as many commercials and junk that they can. There's no free time left for long credits like this. What really annoys me is when they come out of a commercial break, report on something then go right back into more commercials. David Muir on ABC is good for that.
