personally, i think its the fact that native Americans have been through so many gruesome things and people (mostly white) stereotype them and don't even try to understand their situation. so when the exact same people who are only talking about Thanksgiving and Pocahontas, it can be viewed as offensive. i am 100% native American but my birth mom thought it would be safer for me to get adopted since ICWA was going on. But I also am raised by a very white and Korean family. In the end, its really about how people do not know the wrong things that Euro-Americans have done towards indigenous people and mocking it while not understanding the culture is just plainw wrong.

When I was in fourth grade a native American woman came to our class, and shared her culture. She explained to us the meaning of the things she was wearing, some items she brought with her, and showed us some words in their language. I gained a lot of respect for their people because it made it real. It showed me that they weren't just people from TV that get chased by cowboys, that they had legitimate practices and culture and history, and deserve every ounce of respect as any other race. Also find ancient ways interesting to learn about. What we saw in this video was disrespectful, uneducational, and cringe-worthy.

The psychology of what she was demonstrating was to make them remember the pneumonic device. The video was cut off right where she was about to say, "that was ridiculous, but that's how much you're finna need this pneumonic device," or something along those lines. But also, as professionals, it is up to us to understand the populations we serve. Maybe where shes older and hasn't caught up yet. Who knows, but there was no malice here, doesn't seem like.

I volunteered and was asked to play a trading native American. So student #1, I took her earrings, and with a "language barrier," the teacher had a teachable moment on my ingenuity. I had a racist teacher like this and I destroyed her with facts the next day. She said they we're savages and primitive. I made a PowerPoint about how the Portugal where the 1st Europeans that made to the Americas around a 150 year before Columbus. Then I noted that Asians came here and interacted with the natives 200 years before the Europeans and Africans we're trading and mingel with the Natives for HUNDREDS of years before the Europeans and Asians. She asked me don't you have any white pride. I said what am I supposed to be proud about being a uncivilized savage? Then I proceeded to talk about how Africans and Arabs had to teach us that we shouldn't have animals in the same living space that we sleep and eat and we shouldn't 💩 where we get our drinking water from. She kicked out the class and after that I never got a grade higher that a C in her class.

We did stuff like this in school back in the 80's and nobody cried over it, not even the parents of my native American classmates. In fact, sometimes one of them would take a day off work and come in the week of Thanksgiving and tell us about growing up on a native American reservation while our hand drawn pictures of brown people adorned in feathered headdresses shaking hands with white people in pilgrim hats lined the classroom walls. It was wonderful, amazing, we all learned so much, and nobody took offense.
