A Native American student had recorded a math teacher in Riverside wearing a fake feather head dress and dancing in class, while possibly trying to articulate a mnemonic device for trigonometry called SOH CAH TOA. American Indian Movement SoCal has been pressuring the Riverside School District to fire her since the video got national attention in October.

She was trying to drill the mathematical mnemonic SOH CAH TOA into her kid's heads in a way that they wouldn't forget. Honestly, I doubt she's some horrible human being or that she intended to be offensive, but it is what it is. Part of being an adult is learning to be more careful about how your words or actions might be perceived. When I go to work and my coworkers are saying or doing anything that could possibly be taken in any offensive way, I immediately back out of that conversation.

@@toby7886 I don't think that was her intention. I doubt she harbors any hatred toward native Americans. When I was growing up in the 90s, no one would have perceived this as an attack on anyone. I remember teachers and their classes would dress up as indians for Thanksgiving and dance around at school. But now it's 2023. We live in an increasingly sensitive cancel culture. If you don't walk on egg shells someone will call you a racist for something and suddenly your career is over and you're out living on the streets.

This just divides us... "oh, shes white.. im this... hes that" if were all the same, what does it matter? were we not taught that indians put feathers in their hair and chant similar sounds. looks like she had a way to explain each of those letters in that acronym too.... bet they wouldnt have forgotten. Lets see the test scores. As if California, or the US, of the dumbest students w the most ridicukous race-focused curriculum on earth has any say over an appropriate way to teach or learn. let the human being live outside of the boring box for a while. It is in our nature to be innovative. I hope this stupid kid gets handed a book and is expected to learn that way. It couldve been 6th period, after unch, and the teacher is doing what she can to keep these kids that do whatever they want from sleeping. If the superintendent walked in while that was happeneing they wouldve told her that she needed to think of ways to capture their attnetion or to research alternative learning methods. in nursing school, to learn the drugs, i had the most ridiculous images that represented different side-effects, actions, dosages, etc. for each drug. This teaches the kids to think of ways they can make this their own. and this coming from the ones who feel left out or overrun. As if turquoise jewlery and feathers in ones hair is enough to call it a culture anyway. Ive never been to any "American Indian" Restaurant. This aint no culture. @@dav1djac0b she would often try to relate to minority students but did so inappropriately. She openly admitted her family's prejudices, and her attempts to connect with us seemed misguided. One time, she mentioned working at Watts and implied that none of the white students would survive there, which was uncomfortable. I was one of the few minority students, and she frequently apologized on behalf of others, assuming I faced racism. Actions like these didn't make class more enjoyable; actually made it awkward. Now this poor woman is getting so much hate she lost her job she's being called racist. Nothing about that was racist. Like you said she could use some dance lessons. @Haseeb 2 while I agree with teaching kids the old fashioned way (it is one of the reasons why I homeschool), most kids these days need to be entertained. Perhaps it's because people who have been on the receiving end of put-downs, harassment, and exclusion for years are done with the "I was just joking", "toughen up", or "woops" comments that come after multiple experiences of putting down a minority status, alternative faith, invisible disability, false assumptions of someone's worth based on their zip code (or how they dress), and a myriad other issues. This teacher was acting in an unintelligent manner which mocked a racial group, and probably made the Native American who filled the complaint highly uncomfortable in the presence of his or her white peers. It might be helpful to read up on Cultural Competency, a subject that helps people understand how to be aware of, and mindful of how our behaviors can make a more welcoming environment for all.

@@gage51desoto You've kinda got a point, though there are also non Native American people canceling those who even talk or use the wendigo in any art form that isn't 100% accurate, getting the video taken down while like 90% of Native Americans are happy to see the representation. So it's either that, or basically nothing at all, and it's annoying. I'm Native American myself and it's frustrating to see. I don't think this woman is a monster, but what she's doing is inappropriate and uncomfortable to watch. Because the wendigo has been told in stories as a sort of cautionary tale, and also drawn, there's a difference between being like "oh I like this folklore, let me use it to make an artistic interpretation, despite it not being fully accurate, because I enjoy it" and being like "let me wear a fake ceremonial headdress and do what I think a Native American dance to be like without actually bothering to do it accurately, in a MATH CLASS" Like..there's a difference between genuinely being interested in a culture, and just...doing whatever this is. If that makes sense. It seems she's more using Native American culture than just being inspired by it and genuinely interested in it. Again I'm not sure if this is intentional or not.

@@thoneybadger95 I’m not referring to her teachings before this, since obviously I don’t know it. And perhaps it would be unfair to boil down an entire teaching career of someone to one point. But from this clip, it is very clear that the teacher is unaware and uninterested in the reception that she’s getting from her students. The mnemonic aside, what I’m concerned about is that she continues for a large portion of the lesson to prance around the classroom. Maybe in another situation, her teaching would be effective, but the students aren’t responding well, and it’s the responsibility of an instructor to recognize that and adapt their instruction. The fact that she isn’t is at the very least indicating that in this lesson, she’s not very effective.

It seems that she was intending to demean and promote further incorrect perceptions with her actions. The people who are upset about this do not have "thin skin". They are responding to something so common that people tend to just laugh out off, rather than spending time trying to understand why it could be upsetting to others.
