I'm from the area: We were supposed to have a multi-million tunnel project called the ARC Tunnel installed back in the late 2000's to address the issue of there only being one extremely old tunnel handling all traffic in and out of Manhattan. Neither Christie or Cuomo wanted to pay more than the other one even though there probably would've been some form of federal funding to help. They played a back and forth game and ultimately if it had been started immediately 10-12 years ago, we wouldn't have this ongoing issue. It was cancelled in 2010. This isn't even including the fact that for years after Hurricane Sandy there were 20 minute delays both from letting trains through the only operable track lines due to there being one tunnel plus construction to fix this tunnel from Sandy. Then the Gateway Program in 2011 was meant to be a tunnel going to the Hudson Yards but as of yet it is completely non-existent; since 2022 both governor's finally agreed to share some of the cost, but federal funding has lagged from the last few presidential administrations including the one we're currently in. The good news: The Gateway project has FINALLY gotten funding from the current bipartisan infrastructure bill and it's finally going to be started sometime this year. It's been a LONG time coming.

The bill was passed but it's going to be another ~10 years until this tunnel project is actually done. It would have already been completed if Gov. Christie didn't abruptly cancel the original "Access to the Region's Core" ARC project back in 2010, which called for new tunnels between NJ and NYC. Then this new Gateway Program was started up by Amtrak in 2011 which also urgently called for new tunnels in addition to other upgrades (like Portal Bridge), but Christie and then Pres. Trump stalled things for a while until stuff finally started getting done in ~2020.

What is to note is that the average Japanese delay includes earthquakes and tsunami delays... I rode on the Yamanote Line in Tokyo, that rail line is 139 years old and had top speeds of 55 mph, 2 minute headways, and transports 4 million people per day without delay. But frankly comparing American rail infrastructure to Japan is too much, you can compare it to average developing countries and it'll still rank worse. [They were opened in 1910, and the power system is still the EXACT SAME on the portions of that track.] WRONG ANSWER -- Pennsylvania Station and its tunnels were originally built with only 600 volt DC third rail to power its trains. Steam powered Pennsylvania RR trains had to change engines at Manhattan Transfer in the Jersey Meadows. The 11,000 25 cycle AC trolley wire in Penn Station and out to Long Island were added during the 1930's electrification of the Pennsylvania Railroad to Washington DC and Harrisburg PA (remember the GG1 locomotives?). And that 11,000 volt 25 cycle power supply IS STILL POWERING THAT PART OF THE NORTHEAST CORRIDOR!

Secret: The design failure of the original Acela train (it's 6" too wide) caused a huge loss of revenue than what was expected. Amtrak had told Congress they would use profits from the Acela to fix the infrastructure, but after the failure they couldn't go back and ask for more because someone might remember they were supposed to make enough money to fix the tracks. Amtrak sucks.

I lived in Brooklyn for over 50 years. I watched this sad situation unfold. New York, New Jersey and the feds: 1) rarely could agree on anything; 2) bungled projects they did agree on; and 3) failed to think big enough! At least 4 tunnels were needed (train & car). And I felt a tunnel allowing drivers to get from Brooklyn/Queens to New Jersey (bypassing Manhattan) would have been a big help. But failure to come together & execute simple plans led to the current situation. Local & state politicians had no problem handing out permits to build skyscrapers/condos, but forgot/ignored projects to help low & middle class residents who already live in the 50-mile region around NYC. This was a critical problem decades before covid & the migrant crisis. By the time 9-11 & Hurricane Sandy occurred, it was too late. Mismanagement of infrastructure problems has had a devastating impact on the NYC metropolitan area. And ripple effects are felt nationwide.

On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, I took Amtrak Acela from NYC to Boston, Boston to NYC several MTA subway trips and then a roundtrip from NYC to Red Bank, NJ. EVERY. SINGLE. TRAIN was delayed. I even had to wait over 30 minutes for a downtown A line subway from Penn Station in the sweltering heat. The infrastructure in and around NYC is straight up third world siht and there are countless places to assign blame. They recently spent $8 BILLION to build a new transit station at Ground Zero and spent more billions for the Moynihan annex to Penn Station, yet they still can't build a second tunnel to NJ or update the switches? Then there is the pro-criminal woke pandering Democratic buffoons who refuse to prosecute fare jumpers, which costs the MTA $700 million in lost revenue per year. There are countless billions of dollars being grifted by unions, workers "working overtime" (while vacationing at their second homes in Florida), draconian regulations and permits for which there are countless open palms expecting payment. The transit unions ensure that no workers are fired and that people are rewarded for mediocrity and laziness. There is no reason why the cost to fix infrastructure in NYC should be 10x what it would cost in any other city. The entire leadership of NY, NYC, MTA, Amtrak, Port Authority and every union needs to be flushed down the toilet and rebuilt from scratch with transparency and ethical oversight. We need a visionary like Vivek Ramaswamy or Elon Musk to shock the system and make things work again.

0:24 she’s wrong , 8th largest economy in the world is GDP per capita. USA is the richest country on earth. Per capita doesn’t mean nothing for the U.S. Let me be clear USA can build something for $5 billion which is a lot of money for Luxembourg the richest countries in the world per capita. USA can spend over trillion dollars in military yearly. Can Luxembourg spend $100 billion on defense? No.

Too bad the Gov of new york axed the congestion pricing which would have aided in the budget of the mta for improvements and possibly also resulted in a boost for NJTransit ridership /income to also aid in improvements as well. But its not like news outlets werent running fear segments about it the whole time. So what now?

Here's some context NBC left out. 1) As shortsighted as it was for then Governor Christie to cancel the tunnel project back in 2010, he said it was because he was afraid NJ was going to be entirely on the hook for the cost overruns. 2) Most of Amtrak's delays are outside the Boston-NY-Washington Corridor where they do not own their tracks, the freight railroads do and their dispatchers have been giving priority to their mile-long freight trains over passenger trains.

Gov. Christie pulling out from ARC (Access Regional Core) project was/is a catastrophe.. Construction had already begun and it was nothing more than political showman ship to reject money for any type of rail...Gov. Walker of WI did the same thing at the same time...with equally as dismal results.
