I test fire pumps for a living. Here’s a theory I’ve been thinking on. Now when multiple pumpers hook up in a close area and at the same time the demand on volume goes crazy. Multiple pumps sucking hard. One thing I was taught long ago, unless gravity fed you never ever go below 20 psi on suction side. I bet they collapsed mains with the demand. Folks should pay attention to how many water mains are repaired. Look I’m not pointing fingers, but I can see this happening. You have 5/6 pumpers all tied into hydrants in say a few blocks. Hoping to blunt the fire. They go live and the pumpers are feeding away. Demand outpaces supply and pressure drops, there’s pumps trying to feed those hydrants but their supply is dwindling so volume drops, psi drops. The guys running the trucks are under extreme conditions and do not shut off the pumps or shut down their hoses cause the people are fleeing and they do what first responders do they go hard. Psi hits a point and pipe anywhere in the area with just a weak joint, a thin wall from corrosion, just one length with a 2’ section that is ready to fail. Boom you collapse the main. I’ve turned on pumps to test hydrants and seen catastrophic failures in underground feeds. Granted that’s from psi spike. However as I stated earlier you never go below 20psi on suction when rolling large volumes of water. I could be wrong, but I won’t surprised if that’s the case. If they flat just ran out of water which I find hard to believe. Then that’s criminal in so many ways. All water sheds have a primary source. Rather that source is currently filling reservoirs or cisterns or water towers the source is usually sound provided pumps are running.
@MidnightSonnet15 күн бұрын
That's actually what experts are saying is happening. Hydrants weren't built to handle this much demand. Normally, we'd have one big-ish fire in an area to contend with, which is easier than 3 massive ones and dozens of smaller ones. The capacity of the hydrants are being pushed to the limit. Absolutely no one expects the kind of devastation we're experiencing now.

I completely agree with you. I’ve been wondering about the home insurance policies and exemptions hidden in small print. I live in north of England and we’re fortunate not to live in areas susceptible to flooding. A lot of homeowners are unable to insure their homes against flooding which renders them worthless and impossible to sell. Even now, areas which could have insured their property in LA will probably never be able to afford the premiums. Let’s face it, insurance companies only want your money and don’t want to pay out. It worries me so much how the ordinary, hardworking families will recover from this. My 17 yr old daughter is severely disabled, she can’t walk or talk and requires 25 separate doses of medication daily. If I had to choose what to save in a fire I’d have to leave everything apart from diapers and meds. It’s heartbreaking 💔 The insurance companies are ruthless. The lucky policyholders who are covered will have to fight tooth and nail for payouts and when they are able to renew their policies they’ll probably be quoted extremely high premiums. 😢

Every year, the Amazon jungle burns, and some of the most biodiverse ecosystems are destroyed. Now, as fires rage in California, even lands owned by the wealthy have not been spared. Private firefighting companies are being deployed, but it’s a stark reminder that, in the face of nature's fury, money can lose its meaning. For years, many have distanced themselves from disasters like the Amazon fires, thinking they don’t concern them. But when a fire comes to your doorstep and there’s no one who can help, the reality becomes painfully clear. Those of us watching from afar now see your pain, just as others watch when the Amazon burns. I pray our leaders understand that this isn’t just about isolated events-it’s about life on Earth. We must act together to prevent further destruction, not just for human settlements but for the planet we all share.

@SB11105814 күн бұрын
This has nothing to do with global warming-it’s about how and where homes are built in California. Fire codes were designed to minimize risks in fire-prone areas, focusing on defensible space, fire-resistant materials, and safe building practices. Many older homes were built before these codes were in place, and rapid development in wildfire-prone regions often ignored or bypassed them. California’s natural fire ecology, combined with poor planning, is the real driver behind these destructive fires.

We were also on standby and immediately responded to an American request for more resources and we'll have a further 250 smoke-eaters and equipment on the ground tonight ready and able to go. Canadians are extremely aware how fast and dynamic these wildfires are and how urgent the need is for experienced crews to get engaged in the battle. We stand with our cousins to the south.
