El Salvador has continued its crackdown on what officials are calling a war on gangs as the government has arrested 6,000 gang members in response to a killing spree in March. The rise in gang violence caused a countrywide state of emergency, but advocates claim some of the the efforts are creating a framework for abuse.

As someone who has had two cousins brutally murdered by people like this, I support this. My cousins were fathers that were chased down and brutally murdered in front of their family because they refused to join. People were threatened if they picked up their body too soon to show others what they are capable of. I have no sympathy for them, they are being showed more mercy then my cousins were.

Secondly, to be a so called 'shining light' only requires having the facts and telling the truth regardless if the world is 'evil' or benevolent. It is people that make this world what it is. People aren't against the gang members being rounded up. People live in a fantasy world if they think the issue is that simple. People are against the consequences for innocent and falsely accused El Salvadorians whose lives are destroyed and the future of every innocent person in El Salvador when the framework for police state abuse with zero accountability is being set. Right now it's the lesser of two evils. But if and when that ceases to be the case, the abuse, killings and torture will be a lot harder to stop when it's the government of El Salvador doing it instead of street gangs.

lol you don’t know anything about the situation. Do a little research on El Salvador’s president. He’s destroyed the countries free press, he even put government spyware on journalists computers to track them. The only reason there were 62 killings is because journalists released proof that the president gave high ranking gang members special treatment in prison. In response he made arrests to save face but none of these men arrested were given any type of trial. 2% of the adult population is locked up and for many there is probably little to no proof for gang ties. He declared a state of emergency because it suspends many civil liberties and allows arrests to be made easier.

The question is now is how are they going to treat them in prisons? Obviously, 6000 new inmates in 10 days is a disaster in the making if there is not enough equipments to handle them humanly. IDK, this has to also be added with more studies to prevent the crime rate from increasing or this is a pointless stunt.

Salvador needs this president with strength and support of it's people. He wants to clean out his country from a disease. May the good people and hard working citizens of that country find peace at last.

This brings a smile to face I lost so many family members due to gangs and I visit Salvador every year . I went last year and Salvador felt so safe and the people seemed happy to roam the streets freely without fear anymore , bukele is really improving the country for the best of his people. Note : NO ONE outside the country should criticize badly about the president work unless u live there and have experienced the same situation of the people of Salvador living in fear everyday.

I agree. I’m pro-human rights when possible but at times violence and abuses need harsh intervention for the criminals. These really do seem to be gang members. That awful about your family. We’re you there as the country got worse?

Mate I would love to visit El Salvador but the violence has always put me off. If this is the way the country is heading people like me will start visiting and glady boosting the economy. Let's hope this is a real turn around point for the country and it's people are able to enjoy their lives more and become more prosperous going forward. Good luck and all the best

Should also be done in the US. Round up every branded/inked gangbanger and charge them with everything and anything possible. There is NO RIGHT to be a criminal. There is no right to commit crime.

@@thesisLAx yea there was a time 5 years ago where I was limited to go with my family in areas Bc gang members would stand in the corners waiting for someone to pass by and even the cops WERE corrupted Bc they also work with gangs but I went last year and the environment seems extremely different to my last visit 5 years ago. (P.s I did see my first dead body on the road from La Libertad last year) but Ik the NEW president is trying his best to make a safer country with non corruption of cops.
