The jockey threaded his way through and around tiring horses while saving as much ground as he could. Some of the others were wide or had to go wide and they lost a ton of ground. The jockey rode a beautiful race and the horse was pulling away at the finish. I thought Epicenter would get it but he gallantly took second. The winner was really moving, faster than everyone else.

Sonny was amazing how he threaded his horse through at every single opportune moment!! You could see him turn the horse's head to the outside with the reins when he made the move to go around the rail horse in the stretch to take the rail for the final stretch run. Un-effing-believable.

As I watched again and again and again, then the interviews with the owner, trainer and jockey. The interviews this morning where the trainer is calling him "Richie" And now Americas Horse. this is God's horse blessing the team that came together. And Sonny Leon is the Horse whisperer. He talked Rich Strike during the entire race. Did you see the horse's face as he approached the leaders and looked at them, then blew by them....what an inspiration for all. 21 is the focus...

Sometimes, its all about the competition. A miracle, maybe, but with an a explanation. Derby needed selling after Medina Spirit. These horses were over-hyped, over-sold and over-rated. That was the key. Look at their times. They were SLOW. 2:02 3/5 is no great derby time. Its about the 48th fastest time. The long shot had a chance. Record is 1:59 2/5. This derby winner finishes 15 lengths behind Secretariat.

AT 4:29 in the video, you can see the horse looking at the 1st place horse. He them straightens out his head, looking forward at 4:33. It's like the horse felt the challenge, and owned up to it. I've seen a lot of Derby racing over the years. This was hands down, the best Derby I've ever seen. Congratulations on the win!

A horse with heart and strength you can tell he loves to run.The jockey not spending all the horse to fast and the way he move his lines though the other horses really shows how talented of a jockey he is.Sonny's win is one of those stories I get to share with my grandchildren and to remind them like my momma always told me dynamite come in small packages.

The announcers were all about how "blazingly fast" the first quarter mile time was; at this point in the race, Rich Strike was in the bottom 3. Seems like Rich Strike can keep pace with the pack without much effort which then gives him the energy to sprint at the end. It also looks like Rich Strike may be slightly shorter than the average horse in the race which typically isn't a good thing because their stride length will also be shorter. Amazing to see something like this.

Both the horse and the jockey were just spectacular, where they not? While all those horses were burning themselves out with that blistering pace, Sonny kept his horse at a reasonable pace while saving ground on the rail. All this and the horse still had some in the tank to bypass the leaders!

My dad was heavy into horse racing in the 70s and occasionally revisits the stakes - he said the horse was great but the jockey was the difference maker here. Sonny knew exactly where to place his horse at the most critical moments. Pure racing

Two things. 1) a bunch of nice folks! 2) as good as that horse was, and he was GREAT, I think the jockey actually won the race. The way Leon started, way off to the left, and then guided the horse immediately towards the fence, was super-smart. Then, to "steer" the horse in and out of all the other horses was unbelievable. It was like watching an artist paint, this guy knew EXACTLY what he was doing. Lastly, when Messier was right in front of him, at the end, he just guided Rich Strike right around him. Its was like watching a slalom ski racer shooting around a gate. So, I think Leon won this race, and Rich Strike was lucky to have him.

That ride by Sonny Leon was up there with Shoemaker on Ferdinand. Awesome. He is a solid rider on Midwest tracks. I hope this vaults him to the big time. It always feels good when the little guys get the spotlight. Bravo! Oh I didn't have a nickel on him but it still was enjoyable. I had Zandon who hung in the stretch. Pace was too fast on a muddy/ sloppy track for this distance.

The real story of why that horse won was that jockey Sonny Leon who rode an unbelievable race. Rich Strike would never have won without Sonny the Jockey. He should be getting waaayy more respect. I grew up with horses and racing & the strategy he used to move RS was beyond brilliant. Replay the race. You'll see what I mean. They should have acknowledged the jockey first. I hope he goes on to win a zillion more races!!!! And makes a zillion more dollars. .
