Q&A: Hello! I have a few questions regarding lead in cables from the pit. I have a property with 2 separate houses that need a fresh new installation of the lead in cable from the pit but discovered that the actual conduit underground has some blockage issues(the current copper cable from pit to the first property is damaged and only at 20% usage) and second property has no cables installed from pit). Is it NBN's job to have this installed for free? Because the nbn techy said that I was required to pay for it. Would you install a new conduit or need to use the blocked one? Who is responsible for the installation of the cables within my 2 properties?

@jeremylindemann511722 күн бұрын
That sounds like a property maintenance issue which might come under the jurisdiction of the local council. A new property would require a new pit and lead-in installation to be done by an approved installer, perhaps Telstra or NBN co. The old damaged copper cable for your existing property is a different story. Firstly, the copper cable should be inside of a protective conduit. If it isn't then the cable may not have been competently installed by an approved technician, but by an owner who likely decided to save money by doing it themself. I'm not sure what you mean by your conduit having "blocking issues" but it should not be intersecting any other pipework. If the copper pipe or conduit is damaged then you need to have it replaced. For that you should contact your ISP and organise a technician through them or ask for the name of an approved third party installer. If you damaged the copper cable then you will have to pay for the expensive of replacement. If a technician damaged it then you will have to make a claim with your ISP and ask them to replace it. They may require proof of who damaged the cable, how and when.
@chcknew-when860222 күн бұрын
@jeremylindemann5117 The new property is an extension and needs a separate infrastructure because the builder skipped that part and no longer is contactable. Is it possible to have nbn responsible and cover the cost for trenching in concrete and lay the infrastructure under the 'last resort' option?
@jeremylindemann511722 күн бұрын
@@chcknew-when8602 I don't think nbn will do it for no cost because they are under no obligation to. They might still do the pit and trench installation work so I suppose you can always make an enquiry with them and ask for a quote. You may have some legal recourse which will oblige the builder to finish any agreed work but it would depend on just how uncontactable they are. I'm not really sure, I'm not an expert on property and building.

Hey Jason, our town is about to receive FTTP in about 12 months' time (NBN-Gods willing) and am thinking of pre-running conduit (existing service is overhead) from the property line into the house where I need it (about centre of the house). What size conduit does NBN like and do I need big sweeping radius corners to enable a smooth installation? 🤔

I had issues with FTTN copper reliability recently. I ended up getting it resolved by dealing with my ISP (iinet) but not after some difficulty. Call your ISP's tech support line and report the issue. They will likely run you through some normal, simply routines to resolve the issue. These checks will normally involve restarting your own equipment (modem/router and computers). So it would be wise to make sure all your equipment and cabling inside the house, right up to the where the lead-in cable terminates inside your property are all working properly and are not the cause of the fault. Sometimes a simple looking join can be bad so it's worth checking them. Once you've been through all those checks with your ISP you can make a request for them to inspect the line. They can do this at a few places, within your property, in the distribution pit on your property and at a local NBN node. If if turns out that there issue is your fault then you can be charged for the technicians time, if the problem is on their end they won't charge you. I had a strong suspicion that my dropouts and speed problems were not due to anything on my property so I ended up requesting that a technician be sent out 2 or 3 times. On a second inspection at the nbn node they discovered a problem with my copper line termination at the nbn node. It had been interrupted by a previous technician doing work on someone elses line. They fixed my connection and my FTTN speed went from 33MBps to 100Mbps and the dropouts stopped happening. So, in short, you'll have to go through the hassle of dealing with your ISP but it will most likely be worth it.

Congratulations. A general question / clarification on fibre upgrades that might help some people out - In a situation where the existing incoming conduit terminates in a crap location - can you install appropriate conduit for the NBN insaller to extend the fibre run? I assume the external fibre box would ge where the external conduit terminates, and then internal fibre run in new conduit to inside fibre box. Sorry for the convoluted wording!

@jeremylindemann511722 күн бұрын
You would have to check your ISP with what they allow the customer to do. My guess would be that you can install or modify the conduit yourself but you might need the technician to inspect and approve it which may mean leaving the conduit trench uncovered until they get to your property. The cabling itself most likely has to be done either by your ISP's tech or an approved third party contractor.

From a house owner point of view I would rather have run an ethernet cable through the roof than put ugly conduit runs on the outside wall. That's not a comment on Secure-A-Com's work, he's doing what's practical with limited time, in agreement with the customer. I like to prepare things ahead of a technician's visit to make things as quick and painless on the day as possible.

Congats on making 1mil views. Do you think when they do fibre to premises that the Depth dug down is safe in regards to future with landscaping and trees?
@commodorenutАй бұрын
In the case of my old house, they couldn’t feed the fibre up the existing u/g conduit, so they had to lay new conduit from the pit to the house. We got a week of heavy rain just a month or so later, and a good 2-3m of white NBN conduit popped up in the middle of the patchy grass mess they left. I followed it both ways and with the exception of dipping down into the pit, it was no deeper than 6 inches anywhere, and in most spots was barely 2” below the surface. I rang up and complained to NBN Co, so they sent a guy out to assess it. He claimed I must have dug it up myself and wouldn’t note it down as a pxxx poor job on their part. Because of no action, I complained again and the phone operator looked up the address and told me it’s noted that the owner tampered with the install so they won’t fix it. The dirt below the shallow muddy channel was rock hard - proof it couldn’t have been properly buried, and likely the reason they did a pathetic job. My in-laws had guys with a ditch-witch come and do their trench. I’m guessing that’s what should have been done at my old house.

NBN installation requirements dictate a dedicated GPO below or below and to the side within a couple of hundred millimetres from the mounting point of the NTD. I expect the householder will have to pay for an electrician to install a dedicated GPO for the NTD in proximity to your data socket. The existing GPO seen in your video is clearly being used for other purposes and would be unsuitable for NTD use. Otherwise, congratulations on the growth of your channel.

I"m finding NBN are saying now we will not repair your copper service because fibre is now available. Then the poor customer has to wait weeks to months for fibre to become available if it is not in the pits already. This process is where the copper service requires a complex fix ie remediation required for joints, lead cable issues that requie money spent.
