"more riffs for your song, not more riffs in your song" is the eternal DAW writer plague 😂 I find it so hard not to get attached to every riff and decide which ones to cut down or out. But you're right, it ends up with tighter arrangements in the end!

I get the convenience of the programmed bass but you gotta start recording your own bass. You do the guitar and play an electronic kit instead of just straight midi programming. Bass is all that's left for you to get the one man band title.

Make your riffs feel more like a song by writing melodies and not riffs. Listen to some Chick Corea and Trey Anastasio. They might not be the style you're trying to write but they're gonna be really instructive as far as "music that tells a story". Think of it like a sentence. You don't just string words together. You write a sentence!
