*My Apologies for the water on lens, it may have caused some blurriness and a foggy look to video. It was a light rain going on at the time of recording.
*This video pics up about at about 1min into the battle as I was trying to find a good spot to record from.

This has been some time ago. Technically Cold Steel and Million Dollar Funk Squad are actually close and the battles are intense because they are the best in the MEAC arguably the best in HBCU however Norfolk is freakishly close to DCI technicality. It was unfortunate that some Aggie alumni set the Spartan Guards off. Them dudes about business all the time and welcome the opportunity to buss a head or two. But I must go on record in saying that these two sections have mad respect for one another. LONG LIVE HBCU MARCHING BANDS

Now I've watched the end of this clip several times and I've come to the conclusion that neither of the drum lines were involved in the scuffle. I saw the Spartan legion guards doing as their duties intel which is safeguarding all units of the band. It was apparent that some fans became a little to rowdy in an effort to video record the battle. I for one feel as though we are all African Americans and it was a blemish on bother schools for such an incident to occur. Now where were campus police????? Had their presence been known or felt their would not have been such an altercation. To the fans it's sickening knowing that ALL HBCU's are under attack nationwide. This unspeakable unjustified heinous act of barbarism has no place in performance and entertainment. Grandmother's Grandfather's parents, siblings, extended friends and family were all witnesses to this nonsense. If that's the case keep the general public at bay and control the environment or just battle in the stands. BEHOLD!!! Great Job MDFS and COLD STEEL.

PS: to the media team who posted this clip and did not edit the fight out of it shows your moral character. Not a good look not a major key.
@RichbergEnt
@RichbergEnt 7 жыл бұрын
I normally don't reply to comments on my videos when someone is stating their opinion or when the comment is filled with opinionated thoughts and statements. But for this one, I'm going to make a brief exception because of the nature of the video and comment. In regards to this video and my choice in choosing not to edit all of the fight out. 1) First I want to state that my company is not The Official A&T or NSU Band Media Team. I run a sole independent operation of media and coverage. My goal is always to present my point of view as I see it. I am a fan of Marching Bands in General, Good or Bad...I love them all. I am a former Band member of an HBCU!! The school is not important, but i will say that it is neither A&T or NSU. I have family members and friends who have marched in both programs and from both programs i have enjoyed many performances over the years. 2) My Moral Character has nothing to do with my decision as to how I edit. How I edit is based on the idea of what type of story I want to share. Now, while this style of documenting is not your typical interview style of shooting and cutting, it is a style that works as a documentary. I record what I see and post. This particular video shows a Drumline battle and yes..a short lived fight. The next time I post, it could be something that save someones life, or provide an opportunity of exposure for a program that would not normally gain the attention of my audience. "Who Knows"??? My Point is is that Good or Bad...this event happened and I shared it, just like the other people who were beside, behind and in-front of me did. I witnessed fans of both schools posting this to their "Facebook" using Facebook Live Posting. So whether or not you choose to categorize myself and the other people who were also out there recording this same event on their cell phones cameras and posting it to their social media is your opinion I suppose, but just understand I took into consideration that other people had already posted it and put it out their before I even got home that night. I also asked and consulted with people that are close to both programs before I made a post. More people are happy to see that both drum line's represented their schools for the most part in an honorable way. As you noticed, both lines walked away and were not involved with the fight. It clearly shows the guard defending himself. I believe that he was in the RIGHT based on what I heard about the incident. I open an opportunity for the Guard himself to reach out to me and tell his side of the story, but I don't think that is necessary. The fight wasn't the highlight of my post. if it was, i would have only posted that part plus the other parts of the incident that I have and didn't post. I know that the official School Media teams will edit their footage and post without the fight, but I don't have that same obligation. I didn't ask those gentlemen to taunt the guard to the point where he felt necessary to physically defend himself. I am saddened by the fact that he had to do that, but Im glad he did. No one should have to put up with bullying and taunting. I hope this video serves as an example of "what not to do" when watching and spectating. 3) And my third and final point. I ask that you watch the other videos that I have posted on my channels. You will find that Im pretty consistent in how I post band videos. Hundreds of band videos are being posted all the time not just by me but many others. Most of those videos are without fights...don't base my morality on one video that has 30-40 seconds of something you don't like. The video had 10mins + of good Drumming. If you came to this video...I assume you came because you wanted to see the drum line's battle with sticks and skills. You would not have know it was there based on my title and description of the video. I will apologize to you and whoever else felt that this video puts a bad light on their beloved schools, but I see differently. I respect both schools and look forward to seeing both band programs again. @TheDizFunkshunal1 Your comment alone did not call for all that I replied with, but it fits the tone of other similar comment post. So I'm addressing everyone here. As Im writing the response, Im not angry or upset. I just felt the need to state my side of the story for why I uploaded this video. I care and respect peoples opinions and I hope that you and others will except mines and take it for what it is. Please do not breed more into this than what it is. But at the end of the day I know that i can not control others and what they think about me. so for now, I will continue to post and share my story.....As What I see....From My Point Of View!! which is Richberg Entertainment. Be Blessed!!

THAT REMINDS ME OF THE DRUMLINE MOVIE WHEN THE KID SAID HE WAS GOING FOR A & T. A LESSON LEARNED WHEN THERE IS A BATTLE NO ONE SHOULD CROSS THE LINE. A DRUM BATTLE SHOULD HAVE RESPECT AND DIGNITY MOREOVER WHEN YOU CROSS A SECTION UNFORTUNATELY THAT IS THE RESULT. NO ONE SHOULD WALK ACROSS ANY ONE'S LINE WHILE A BATTLE IS IN MOTION. GOD BLESS BOTH SCHOOLS. #TGFR. I LOVE MU PHI SIGMA.

This obviously shows how the fight started. But if people were disciplined enough on how to not take "shit talking" personally nothing would've went down. People talk trash about bands and nobody really fights about it so fighting over shit talking at a drumline battle? Come on now. It was all fun and games people, it never should've escalated to a fight, especially from one of the flag guards.

What an ending. That wasn't the drummers. I thank the poster for the absolute surprise. Im a drummer as well. From New Orleans... ill say that tensions tend to run high between rivals. Its not hard to loose discipline. Whats cool is how the drummers mostly stayed out till it was back your bro time.

I give Norfolk the edge over A&T because they’re material was more technical than A&T was this time around but A&T was a little cleaner and Norfolk snares had some dirt when played their 2nd block and the quint solo was a little dirty at the end but it was really nice though. But both sections played well. But the fight at the end was uncalled for. I understand there was trash talking and at times it can be rude or disrespectful but the flag dude from Norfolk shouldn't let that get under his skin so easily.

Michael Burns I understand where you coming from and you totally have a point. But in my previous comment I said he should've controlled his temper better. I know the Cold Steel alumni were talk trash but he needs to just ignore them. He's one of leaders in the band so he's held to a higher standard then other band members. Doing something like that makes himself and the band program look bad. But I understand where you coming with the trash talking. But he should've ignored them and just do what he gotta do. Cause at the end of the day he made a big mistake allowing the trash talking to bother to the point where he started to fight someone.

Gerdy Chevelon that is true, but at times if it gets to you, alot of people dont know how to take it..either that, they dont play the trash talkin game..especially Norfolk..i actually went to their Homecoming..them flag guards are like the police..its just alot of people over step their boundaries and get what's handed to them..but it shouldnt have been that way..i totally agree on that

So what I see towards the end is, basically one of the flag guard members of NSU kind of got into it with I guess a fan and they were mouthing off at each other to where you see them throwing punches. Pretty much both Drumlines were standing there grounds as far as the fight goes. It's things like what you see that ruin Drumline battles because fans always got to rep there school. Man, what in the hell are they fighting for??????? This is supposed to be fun. I loved the drums and great drumlines on both ends. This is something positive. Now, all of that fighting and duking it out; nevertheless at the UNIIVERSITY level, is just stupid and ignorant. I don't want to see that in this again. Leave that shit in the streets or at home some damn where. This is supposed to be POSITIVE black entertainment. And I'd say this is one of the more positive things that we have going. I love it. So, let's continue to capitalize on THIS great and positive stuff. I myself take pride in this stuff. This is the bee's knees for me and I'm sure for others. Let's keep it great!! Thus, keep hands and feet to yourself unless your doing a cool drum act that's been agreed upon. Then, it would be ok!! But man, I don't want to see fighting in our top tier BLACK universities again!!!! I loved the drumming, but I'm VERY disappointed with that other part as we ALL should be!!!

EvrytingCriss919 I need atleast three distinct reasons on how. The spartan guards are female bodyguards for mdfs. Since you know oh so much about them because of you did. You would know they are the main protection of the hot ice girls and the drum majors. Also how can a supposed female bodyguard group throw hands like that. I need a better understanding of this comment you made, cause it's not making any since.

Salty much, lol i saw a few closed hand taps in there, so exhibit A ECSU plays towards yall at the Labor Day thing, and who steps in front 'Spartan Guard". Exhibit B Cold Steel boxes up against MDFS, SO WTF is The Spartan Guard On The Sides. Exhibit C MDFS chooses to leave to head to the bus, But The Spartan Guard goes nowhere. Why Sway?? And i know plenty of females that got hands . but yea no need to say anymore... only person i argue with is my wife whom happens to be a female. Good Day Kind Sirs

+justjay07 elementary? lol I can tell you with NSU. Skip to 10:10 then come back to me. Yea NSU is clean, I agreed. But of course you will be clean if your rudiments easy as a single and double stroke

@justjay07 7 жыл бұрын
Team PAPADUCK Ahhhh yes! The 10:10 minute mark! You must be referring to the first time in years Cold Steel has given me a snare feature where the solo part was at least 16 counts before the other drums came in to cover for the uncleanliness or cover for that lack of the degree of difficulty. I give it to cold steel, the sane solo was very damn clean! However, if your turn the volume all the way up on your headphones or press the headphones in tight to your ears you can hear the tenors and bottom bases playing rim shots and quarter notes to keep time for the snares during their "solo" that NEVER changed tempo. This is the very definition of elementary when that happens. Plus we all know the secret to percussion solos, the appearance or something being more difficult than it actually is, is to play it loud and play it fast. No one does that trick better than cold steel. Very skilled but not quite to the level they make it appear to be
@justjay07

+justjay07 😂 they was doing that the whole Cadence, it actually makes the cadence sound better. You really think they need that to keep tempo? Every drummer should know how to keep tempo. Especially if your a percussionist. That was meant for them to keep tempo

I just don't understand how CS can talk shit about the MDFS bases and stuff playing them high school cadences. Don't have no idea what an inner beat is. Material not even as technical. Plus it seems like they were cleaner a year or two ago. I think MD could've won that one with warm ups frfr.
@justjay07
@justjay07 7 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Cold spell snare solos never longer than 16 counts before the rest of the section comes it to cover the lack of technicality and uncleanliness. No tempo changes in the solo. Easiest way to ,are something easy look/sound difficult is to play it loud and fast. And whatever you do keep the 8 count going. And cold steels last to cadences were extremely high school level

Well. Soft Metal took two L's that night. A lot of comments about MD material being old, complex and not executed well. Really! But that's coming from a fan of a section that's still using floor toms on their chest. These katz had more visuals than chops. 😳 It's time to upgrade and leave the floor toms alone. Soft Metal sounded better last year. What I just watched was garbage. Really.

This is absurd as hell that a drum sectional has to end with some crap like this. Anybody that is not wearing a uniform should not be in the midst of the percussionist. You all are in the end zone, tell all non participants to sit in the stands. If issues continue then during the 5th play in the stands. Nice battle until that shit started.

you cant cross the line and not expect to get beat up by the spartan guards..they march with the band..they are like the security guards..cross the line..you will get your feelings hurt..anyway..both bands were nice..A&T sounds like they straight out the movie..their drums sound like trash..their basses were boomy but they werent as nice as nsu's basses..how can you only have four tonals and 8 more to spare?..A&Ts snareline was together..had less dirt than NSUs snares in certain areas..A&Ts sextet line was ok..i did like NSUs line better because they were more technical material even with their solos..they were better..just a little dirt..A&T think they had the upper hand because they had a groove.. NSU does too..No one can play anything funky and choppy like them
@1mikeburns
@1mikeburns 7 жыл бұрын
Gary Tyler tbh with you..they didnt..how do they play show cadences to a battle..their stuff sounds and looks boring..A&T is like a meac/Swac band..just has more chops and only four tonals..but..their joints sound like movie sequence cadences..like there's part one...part two..and then part three..just a little different..MD is way more versatile..bassline is way better..snares are still better..even though they lacked..quint line still has better material..cymbal line is still way better..CS just loud as hell and they sound old school..everyone says MD been playing the same stuff..yall sleep on them because they use the same material but mix it up a bit so in all honesty..it never sounds the same..even when they march and play cadences..the beats are never the same..they are masters at that..but tbh the bassline still is the only line that is way more versatile in the HBCU you dont see howard..BCU..FAMU..NCCU..or anyone else bassline play like that..VSU bassline..is the only one that comes close to it..but over the yrs..they've been collecting dirt too..but still smashing drumlines..and honestly..if that one dude wasnt talking junk to thw guard he wouldnt have got whooped..

If you can't take "smack talk" you shouldn't be in a HBCU band period.. The fact that college educated people think that someone talking shit is a justification for starting a fight just shows how childish, primal,sensitive, and petty some programs can be.. i watched the whole thing happen live. the Spartan guard (boy with the flag) thew the first puched end of story. Just like any other butt hurt coward that took L's the whole night, the spartan Guard waited until one of NSU's staff members get between himself and the person talking smack to hype up and throw a punch... causing the altercation. which as you can in the video is mainly NSU people fighting each other.. I personally dont think it had to much to do with the guy talking shit.. the boy with the flag could have just walked away.. i really think they were just butt hurt after taking L's all night. NSU your boys with flags are just too sensitive.
