In this episode of the NC Miata track car build, the Moroso coolant expansion tank is getting installed. The coolant tank is the biggest flaw of the NC Miata, prone to cracking and leaking coolant, a potentially catastrophic failure. However, Moroso has a metal expansion tank that completely alleviates this issue. This episode walks through the install and the benefits!

Always use the factory spring clamps. They provide contstant pressure as the components expand and contract due to the heat cycle. Worm clamps do not. I replaced my reservoir with the same moroso tank and the stock clamps worked perfectly. The trick is you need the specialized clamp pliers to open the clamps all the way. Regular pliers are not as effective.

I saw a couple of how-to videos for this project on youtube and in both videos the top comment said to reuse the factory spring clamps. I purchased clamp pliers and spent a good hour trying to get the original lower spring clamp back on before giving up (I could not get the clamp over the rib on the bottom of the Moroso tank) and using a worm clamp. I was able to reuse the top 2 spring clamps. What type of clamp pliers did you use to get it over the rib on the bottom?

Yeah they were all pretty much perfect, I imagine they have a machine do it since they are mass produced.

Great job man. In regards to the FL22 coolant, would you recommend sticking to it or is it ok to use other FL22 compliant coolants like Prestone Extneded Life 50/50 (Even generic coolant) Also, if I am going to be draining my coolant and adding new coolant as part of a routine service. Would it be ok if I were to drain the coolant, install the tank, and then put in new coolant?

I personally would just stick to the FL22 as that’s what the system was engineered around. However, I admittedly don’t know if generic would cause any issue. As for draining it, that would be completely fine and make the tank install even easier. Just be sure to keep an eye on the level as it will likely drop a fair bit after the flush due to bleeding air out of the system, then re top it off and all should be well. From personal experience if you use the “for Asian vehicles“ coolant you will be fine. I have used it for over 20k with no hassles.

Did your oem expansion tank cap fit the moroso tank? My 2012 cap didn't.

nevermind lol, once mounted the cap, while a little tight, did work.

Sounds like you got it, it fits but yeah it’s pretty tight and take a fair bit of pushing down while twisting

Is there any benefit in a ally coolant tank?

None in terms of performance. Just increased reliability as that is the most likely failure for these cars. With this being a track car, weaknesses get exposed quickly, and wanted to avoid this one as a whole.

If the stock one fails it cannot be caught fast enough by the driver to avoid engine failure due to almost instant overheating.
