Sean. I watched your channel several years ago when I was getting first motorcycles. Unfortunately I got busy with my life and grew away from both your channel and riding my bike often. This year has been a nightmare for my family. Within 6 months both our baby boy and our 2 year old puppy passed away unexpectedly. I have been so lost the last 4 months and haven’t been able to figure out my life. Last week I also lost an old friend that I haven’t seen for 6 years and while I was sitting in mass for his funeral, I felt safe and felt the feeling of belonging to something. Your channel popped into my mind several days ago and I have been watching you everyday since. The way you shine your light on others has brought me joy and gets my mind out of these dark places. Thank you for your therapy. I have begun riding my bike again, for the first time in 5 months. Now I am trying to save up for a project bike to work on to keep my mind busy. God bless you and your family Sean!

I remember seeing those R-90s all over when I was a kid. Police in my country used them for more than 20 yrs. They where maintanied perfectly. Most cops who drove them for years, bought them from force when they got new BMWs. You can still randomly see them on the road. Great, old school bikes if they are maintained properly.
@jbuchana4 жыл бұрын
They're pretty common still here in Kokomo, IN, I have one (a '73 R75/5 long-wheelbase) and I see a few other people riding them every year. We had a very popular BMW dealer here in town that sold a lot of new and used airheads over a lot of years before switching to mostly used Harley stuff.

The easiest way to test a charging system on any vehicle with an alternator, which the R90 has, is to start it up and then disconnect the battery. If the bike dies, it's the charging system. If it doesn't, it's the battery.
@gregorytimmons47774 жыл бұрын
However I have read warnings about NOT disconnecting the battery on a running bike. Not sure what the issue is but I will be checking.
@maxw5764 жыл бұрын
Many bikes have a shunt regulator that drains excess current from the alternator internally. Disconnecting the battery causes 100% of the alternator current to be drained within the regulator. This can overheat and burn out the regulator. Probably not an issue for a quick test when the bike is idling, but I wouldn't rev up the engine for a long time while disconnected. Newer regulator designs stop the alternator from creating current instead of draining excess current eliminating the overheat issue.
@sirjhonson82184 жыл бұрын
@@gregorytimmons4777 They claim it can spark and blow up the battery because it releases hydrogen gas.
@joeaverage4 жыл бұрын
I know you can take the battery out and push start the vehicle / crank it by hand ( I used to do it on a 70-ish renault 12 that had a place to put a crank under the front bumper ) it might work on a small old bike as well. So if the battery was dead on his bike he could have run that bike to hell and back if he didn't shut the engine so... his alternator is dead (or it might just need new brushes)

I tour on my 1985 BMW R80RT which I bought new. 157k miles so far. Good regular maintenence & keeping to the oil change specs is key. As is riding a bike per its design. After 40 or so years, the electrics on any bike should be replaced or updated... wiring harness included. Insulation degrades no matter what.... unless it's just an unridden museum piece. Looking forward to another 40 years.... or leaving it in my will. My daily commuter (in season) is my '82 Yamaha XS650 Special. Pretty bulletproof bike. Parts are available & fairly cheap. The kill switch however fell off several years ago so I was just running it without. They don't sell the "kill switches" ala cart so it looks like I would have to buy the entire throttle assembly. Brushes get wore down, rectifiers get heat soaked over the years and the dated mechanical regulator needs replaced with a more modern unit. Rotor and stator can also go bad over time. There are replacements and upgrades that range from several hundred bucks to just making sure that the original components are renewed and just the regulator upgraded.

The German tech is simple ...... On the Old R BMW there is light in dash board that tell you if your battery is charging or not if light in dashboard is on it is not charging ( you have a charging problem ) if it switched off it charges;-)) I can see when you where riding light was on normal that you have stop at gas station with dead battery R90 CS is in Switzerland value 5x a carvers BMW we get them and reselling them around 20'000 to 40'000 $ Yesssssss a lot of money ;-) Love you video and get lot of fun continue and love the size of your place this will be my dream with only BMW

Ahhh. The wonderful world of the good ole BMW Airheads. MUST be properly maintained. Electronic nightmares, but Mechanical perfection.

That was a fine trip youu took! What I would love to see you do is work on a BMW R/ 90 or somewhere in that age range and rebuild it going through everything you can and making it work as if it was brand new, right off The showroom floor. BMW motorcycles will always be in demand regardless of their age. I am a fan of any airhead BMW. It would be a fun experience. Are you up to the challenge?

Minor note: BMW didn't offer an R90/5 at least not in the U.S./Canadian market. In 1974 BMW introduced the R90/6 and the R90S to that market. Note too the R90/6 badging on the side of the engine block.

I took a 70 shovel head out on the road for almost three years .that bike saw every state and some of Canada and Mexico. I built the bike fresh before I left and the only problem I had was the stator and rectifier and that because I got caught in a flash flood in tea creek w. Virgina. I didn't have much money on me at the time and the guy at the Harley shop let me fix my own bike. He was kick ass. I worked for him for about a week to catch him up. He was so cool drinks and phat bottom girls every nigh.

@@RonLaw82 I don't know what that is but this was before you tube.Ivhad some really good titty camera shots. The first year I lived out of bike parties after that I just couldn't stop. Eventually I did in the small town of Gainville Ga. Got a job as a lineman and the rest is history. I went on a 2400 mile run though the south the end October . It was cool.

@Viktor Sligo I tell everybody to do it for their self. One you'll have learn to get along with you and also I had no cell phone or radio or lap top. Two go where the locals hang avoid big cities. It's one of the best things I've ever done for myself. I've already promised myself if I outlive myvthree dogs and can come up with a good dresser I'm gonna do it again. I've had three heart attacks so I don't know if I'm bad ass enough to do it but three is only one way to find out. I'd rather die out there than in a hospital somewhere.

Damn Sean there is not a chance in hell I would have traded that BMW R90 for that other one! no way! For one the r90 is worth quite a bit more than the other BMW and the only thing you needed to change out was the alternator up front, that was a very easy fix and I guarantee you that guy rode off with the biggest smile on his face because he definitely came up with the upper hand, I would have just done what you said and got another brand spanking new battery fully charged and ready, ride as far as you can and change it out when it dies, it kills me seeing you trade that bike for the other one! If I were there with you I would have never have let you do that! That sucks brother!!! But you got to do what you got to do to get home...

If you have tubeless tires, always carry tire plugs and tools and also a way to air it up. If I had tube type, I would be carrying tire patches and 2 small tire irons. I have changed a tire by using a pocket screwdriver, but it wasn't easy. Yes I have had to plug tires on trips.
