Sean. I watched your channel several years ago when I was getting first motorcycles. Unfortunately I got busy with my life and grew away from both your channel and riding my bike often. This year has been a nightmare for my family. Within 6 months both our baby boy and our 2 year old puppy passed away unexpectedly. I have been so lost the last 4 months and haven’t been able to figure out my life. Last week I also lost an old friend that I haven’t seen for 6 years and while I was sitting in mass for his funeral, I felt safe and felt the feeling of belonging to something. Your channel popped into my mind several days ago and I have been watching you everyday since. The way you shine your light on others has brought me joy and gets my mind out of these dark places. Thank you for your therapy. I have begun riding my bike again, for the first time in 5 months. Now I am trying to save up for a project bike to work on to keep my mind busy. God bless you and your family Sean!

The easiest way to test a charging system on any vehicle with an alternator, which the R90 has, is to start it up and then disconnect the battery. If the bike dies, it's the charging system. If it doesn't, it's the battery.
@gregorytimmons47774 жыл бұрын
However I have read warnings about NOT disconnecting the battery on a running bike. Not sure what the issue is but I will be checking.
@maxw5764 жыл бұрын
Many bikes have a shunt regulator that drains excess current from the alternator internally. Disconnecting the battery causes 100% of the alternator current to be drained within the regulator. This can overheat and burn out the regulator. Probably not an issue for a quick test when the bike is idling, but I wouldn't rev up the engine for a long time while disconnected. Newer regulator designs stop the alternator from creating current instead of draining excess current eliminating the overheat issue.
@sirjhonson82184 жыл бұрын
@@gregorytimmons4777 They claim it can spark and blow up the battery because it releases hydrogen gas.
@joeaverage4 жыл бұрын
I know you can take the battery out and push start the vehicle / crank it by hand ( I used to do it on a 70-ish renault 12 that had a place to put a crank under the front bumper ) it might work on a small old bike as well. So if the battery was dead on his bike he could have run that bike to hell and back if he didn't shut the engine so... his alternator is dead (or it might just need new brushes)

I tour on my 1985 BMW R80RT which I bought new. 157k miles so far. Good regular maintenence & keeping to the oil change specs is key. As is riding a bike per its design. After 40 or so years, the electrics on any bike should be replaced or updated... wiring harness included. Insulation degrades no matter what.... unless it's just an unridden museum piece. Looking forward to another 40 years.... or leaving it in my will. My daily commuter (in season) is my '82 Yamaha XS650 Special. Pretty bulletproof bike. Parts are available & fairly cheap. A helpful BMW dealer in Buffalo NY replaced it and it never gave me anymore trouble. That was the only trouble that old BMW ever caused me. Much later in 1989, I bought a 1974 R90/6 with a Butler/Avon full sport-touring fairing and Craven fiberglass panniers. That motorcycle was perfectly trouble-free. The next time you do the fill the gas tank for a stranger, I'm going to follow you in my RV. At 80 Gallons, that would be a pretty good deal. I do wish I could have caught you guys when you were having alternator trouble. There was a simple solution - swap batteries between bikes. I have an airhead. Only bike that consistently has gas pouring out of the carb or oil leaking from the weep hole in the pan or has had THREE flat tires.

Achei muito bonito sua atitude em orar antes de pegar a estrada. Hoje, raramente, vemos jovens defenderem sua fé diante do mundo. Parabéns!!

Ahhh. The wonderful world of the good ole BMW Airheads. MUST be properly maintained. Electronic nightmares, but Mechanical perfection.

You guys should do more of this- set budget, get a bike & go!

New brushes or a newly rewound stator would have done the trick. When the Beemer airheads are in good condition they are pretty reliable too. Old Bikes - I know...

These 45 year old BMWs are well worth the money to buy them. They are fun to bring back to life, and are worth GOLD IF YOU DO THAT TO THEM!! NEVER TURN DOWN A GOOD DEAL ON AN OLD BMW!!! ITS LIKE INVESTING MONEY.. Theres a group fan club called the Airheads where you can ask for parts, for advice, for suppliers, for tech support, an entire community of people who are true enthusiasts of the BMW brand. The older KBikes dont qualify for this group. That is another ball game called the oilheads fan club. Im talking about any Airhead BMW (wind cooled)from the very beginning of BMW motorcycle history up until they started producing K bikes.

A well-maintained BMW R90S or BMW /7 double disc brake can simply be blocked or braked hard until just before the tire whistles. They are good brakes if you know how to care for and how to use them. The charging system can be fixed for a few bucks I bet! Swapping the old BMW for the ugly new face was a bad deal. You will see that when you have to make -or pay for- the first repairs on the modern one ;-)

NINETY US DOLLARS for a tube change??? Wow...Otherwise awesome video. My father used to have an R60/2 when I was a kid, it's the bike that started it all for me, so thank you for bringing back some happy memories!

I thought it was 30 for the tube and 60 for the replacement

Thumbs up cool story excellent bike choices and just for comfort and reliability I would probably choose the boxer twin. I'm a Triumph lover and have owned nearly all of the triples. I'm the only guy waking up well Before Dawn to jump on my BMW r1100s to make it to my dialysis life-sustaining treatment, before 6:00 a.m.. I have developed a bucket list, and one of them is to test ride the Triumph Rocket 3.. Sean, come on out to the Oregon coast it's a beautiful ride for a day or two and I challenge you to find a couple of bikes for $3,500 I'd be happy to even Ride Along, despite I never ride with anybody else! 🙏🏻🙏🏻

One thing to know: before removing the front cover you have to disconnect the battery as there’s a live wire inside at the top that’s easily shorted out.
@cayote1 Жыл бұрын
Yes disconnect the battery ground from the engine block before you take off the cover, otherwise you will have a much bigger problem on your hands. Thanks guys for your spirit of adventure in the face of complications! And your hearts to other people.

I had a 1976 R90/S in 1998-99. Charging system problems are common on old BMW's. Same with old Moto Guzzi's. I know because I have owned a 1976 Moto Guzzi since mid 2012 and it has the same issue. Brushes get wore down, rectifiers get heat soaked over the years and the dated mechanical regulator needs replaced with a more modern unit. Rotor and stator can also go bad over time. There are replacements and upgrades that range from several hundred bucks to just making sure that the original components are renewed and just the regulator upgraded.

The German tech is simple ...... On the Old R BMW there is light in dash board that tell you if your battery is charging or not if light in dashboard is on it is not charging ( you have a charging problem ) if it switched off it charges;-)) I can see when you where riding light was on normal that you have stop at gas station with dead battery R90 CS is in Switzerland value 5x a carvers BMW we get them and reselling them around 20'000 to 40'000 $ Yesssssss a lot of money ;-) Love you video and get lot of fun continue and love the size of your place this will be my dream with only BMW
