We thought we'd try the Brittany Ferries Economie sailing from Portsmouth to Santander with our Hymer B544 Motorhome. It costs a similar amount to driving across Spain, but can save you a few days. This video takes you from arriving at the port in Portsmouth to disembarking in Spain, and gives you a view of the services available on the crossing, as well as our experience of sailing that route in January 2020.

Did this in February 2020 in the wake of storm Dennis, sailing was diverted to Plymouth, it was very rough not allowed out on deck and advised to remain in cabins The roads across Spain are excellent, we drove through the night and didn't change gear for 320 miles!

We were booked on that ferry for June 2020 but it was cancelled. I’ve been on a few rough 24 hour crossings and I find the best way is to take sea sick pill before boarding and just lie down in the cabin flat on my back, avoid any big meal before boarding. It’s very unusual to be rough all the way, but even though spending all the crossing on your back is not ideal, it’s much better than getting sick. Another top tip, is to get an inside cabin, the inside cabin moves a lot less because it’s closer to the centre line of the ferry, this makes a massive difference. The idea of no window may not be good for everyone, but you can’t open it anyway.

We sailed from Portsmouth to Santander on the Cap Finistère and we did not have a kettle provided. Our sailing was the end of April, a swell in the bay but the wind. I went out on deck around 2 a.m. and struggled opening the door, a nice truck driver helped me. My wife is always ill on any ferry so I sympathize. Have a look at Wandering Bird, she uses a wrist band which helps. We drove to Barcelona, the first 20 or 30 miles is not a nice road in my opinion, after that easy. Enjoy your trip and stay safe.

Thanks Bob. The wristbands don't really work for Ju, but then I'm not sure anything would have worked on this particular crossing. I think we'll be on the chunnel from now on!

Hi guys. The ferry takes about 24 hours and it's feasible to drive across France in around that time (with an overnight stop en-route) if you do long driving days. In terms of cost, if you include tolls, the chunnel and likely wear and tear on your van, the two are comparable I think. The real difference is the convenience - driving across France at speed is knackering, especially if you avoid the tolls, while sitting in a cabin or (if the weather allows) in a bar or outside looking at the sea is a far more pleasant experience. Cheers, Jay

Brilliant vlog by the way. Can you tell me how much this journey cost you please as we are trying to find the cheapest way over to Portugal with our Peugeot Boxer 6M van conversion (2 adults). I'm like you and will most likely have to lie down the whole way over lol. I felt your pain. Thanks in advance if you can.

@@TheJimmyglen don't mind you asking at all Jimmy, but costs vary all the time and depend on what cabin you have (indoor versus sea-facing etc). I'd just pop you details in here and you'll get an idea of cost quickly mate: www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/. Cheers, Jay
