Anybody who plays a sport in college and carries a serious major - STEM & a few others is freaking superman or women. Even if they are getting C's. Even playing a sport in HS is not an easy thing to do if you take you academics seriously.

Outsider perspective here, but I think that's a problem with the American/NCAA set-up. Here in Australia there are plenty of professional athletes that study at the same time. Something like 20% of Australia's athletics team at Tokyo came out of Sydney University's athletics program. Two specific examples are Nicola McDermott (Silver medal in High Jump) studies a Bachelor of Science and Rohan Browning (Australia's fastest man, 100m semi-final) studies Bachelor of Law. Not to mention countless examples of team sports athletes that are paid to play their sport while also on scholarship at Uni. When they are paid to train/play their sport, and they're on a uni shcholarship, it makes sense they are able to excel both academically and on the sporting field. They don't have the stress of having to balance study and training while also earning enough to support themselves.

Also, you can tell Garage Strength cares about his athletes as individuals. Many big programs churn kids through the grinder like cattle to the slaughter. They only care about their core guys, and only so much. They get a new “superstar” every offseason so they don’t invest much into individual plans where leaks and weaknesses can be addressed. This is where the small schools sometimes come in and kick a big schools butt. They take fringe guys and make them solid from am strength and fundamental standpoint. This is why Cincinnati will make a run every 3 years in football or UH will make a run every two years. Takes time to get the core guys right.

As an NCAA strength coach (D3) you are not entirely wrong on this. We are limited by NCAA rules as well as time constraints put on us by the coach. This hurts almost as much as anything else you mentioned. Also at the D3 level, most of our athletes know when it is "mandatory" or voluntary to train due to our compliance guy. This means that they often make choices to not show up to train. I also get a ton of athletes with zero training background so I need to take 6-12 weeks just to teach them to train. With hundreds of other athletes that I train, this leaves little time for individualization. This limits progress over the course of the school year. There isn't enough volume...I agree 100% with this but this is partially due to some of the factors above. While you aren't completely out of touch with the college world, this statement is not 100% true of MANY colleges.

I played college football at SMU, and the S&C program there was worlds better than my Highschool. However, even though I was putting on weight to move from OLB to DE and strength comes with that kinda naturally, once I stopped playing due to a head injury my strength EXPLODED once I started researching powerlifting and such myself. I added 330lbs to my S/B/DL total, 45lbs to my OHP and 50lbs to my clean just doing stuff on my own after playing, and I don't think I would have done that in double the time following the strength stuff I did at SMU.

you should really make a video on knee isometrics. It was the single best change I ever made as an athlete. I had osgood for 4 years, and it really limited my training. I couldnt train more that 5 times a week without it getting worse. In fact, it actually got so bad that it weakened my bone and I eventually broke it. Hey Dane, great info as always (even if some people don't want to hear it)! I'm wondering if you apply the same concepts in-season or how you would adjust training volume/intensity? I'm guessing some of the guidelines you laid out are targeted more toward gaining speed/strength/power in the off-season.

All of it is true, they are weak and I tell you why. I was fortunate enough to play college and high school football in a different era and the colleges and high schools have cut back on “athletic training” and want to give kids more time with “social activities.” Actually a college or high school coach for that matter will get in trouble if they did them like they would do us back in the day and the kids know that. Not to sound like an old man that says “get off my lawn” but they are just not dedicated like when we played and didn’t have any choice but to squat and do power cleans every day and then practice football or basketball.

2:00 Let’s be honest average people choose to become these coaches and the problem is is that they don’t actually know what functionally develop strength when you ask the average football coach are they certified to teach football? The Answer is obviously going to be no it’s usually A man with a sense of manhood and idea of strength that is usually both incorrect and incoherent they don’t know how to properly teach strength-based movements at all most men don’t even strong men do not understand how to teach strength based movements as somebody who’s had a wrestling coach with a similar training mentality yes this has happened to me to wear a coach will set up a program for you Demanded of you and it got so bad that I actually ended up arguing with my coach about strength exercises and how they should be functional not damaging because I know for a fact that none of us gotten you stronger during that time. I actually got weaker following his program and got a shoulder injury but when I switch back over to my own program I was fucking fine I was benching 160 for 4 Ugly wraps but now I can pause 175 for 5 He said his program would make me stronger he also said that his program will change every two weeks even though it literally changed daily I loosely followed his program but he demanded more from me because I was the strongest from my size and had the most built body they also don’t focus on technique and demand a lot of higher rep work because they don’t understand the difference between strength and endurance which is why whenever I’ve seen a football player try to clean a barbell it never looks good because they don’t know how to clean a Barbell because they don’t perform any stretches that open up the thoracic spine they think the weight is just being tossed up from the bottom and caught in a shoulder movement average people look at this and try to replicate this without much forethought or studying because Coaches don’t actually want to coach properly they don’t study methods to become a better coach they don’t study plays to become a better coach they don’t look at their athletes and try to understand what is considered appropriate for each person because they don’t have the time to individualize like top-tier NFL coaches due where there will be like 30 per team And athletes get regularly scheduled meetings with each coach they’re not all trained in the same room they’re not all trained in a similar fashion this needs to be applied to the lower level a school has multiple teachers get like 6 coaches a team Come up with a reasonable amount of exercise for children Delegate sqauts bench And deadlifts to different days of the week you can actually put to exercises in the same day then focus on form if an athlete is above a certain height have them loft conventional say 5,11 if an athlete is below a certain height have them lift sumo so below 5,8 Have the shorter athletes prioritize benching more as this will make them stronger at tackling in pushing movement of the taller athletes have stronger leg movement if an athlete is particularly lean for their height say 5,11 and 190-200 then don’t put them as a linebacker just because of their weight the length of their limbs make it difficult for them to adequately defend Instead rather have them do cardio and be a fast runner with long strides making a complicated plan will make your athletes perform better do not simply Dictate every movement by weight and the amount of cardio by weight dictated by weight height and BMI each athlete is weighed and kick bad athletes off the team If I was a coach I honestly would prioritize bad athletes over disobedient ones because I’m OK with a disobedient talkative little shit who can run the line you can pull weight correctly who’s strong But I cannot deal with a respectful but weak incoherent athlete if an athlete gets injured don’t demand that they come to practice footballs are contact sporting which she’ll have to push through injuries but you’re high on adrenaline during most of the game in some cases boys reach us sort of high where they feel invincible despite their injuries After the game is over your athletes get a break they don’t go immediately back to work they should get a few days off before being told they have to come back in which chase when they show up athletes are checked for injuries immediately before workouts because some people don’t know when to quit the ones that have serious injuries are sent home
