I love the fact that she is wearing a Rip-It mask. Folks, I write about orthodontics and they have told me about the softball injuries. They say, "Anyone who looks at the x-rays would never go out in the circle again without the mask." Young women have avoided facial fractures and bashed teeth because they wore the protection, and Montana Fouts is proof that they don't affect your performance. I do not think the masks should be mandatory, but I sure think it's smart.

It’s actually mandatory in a good percentage of youth softball settings. Having seen some very bad incidents in youth baseball I wish it were culturally accepted there. Some baseball rules actually get in the way of wearing one, like requirement to wear a cap (since no one has designed a mask compatible with a cap). It might take an onfield death or disfigurement for parents to see the light on this and consider advocating for pitcher protection. I applaud Montana Fouts.

Getting hit in the body is actually the bigger problem. Multiple players have died from getting hit in the chest by baseballs and softballs. I even remember, it seems like around a decade ago, but some boy died when he fell on a softball with his chest. There has been a lot of deaths from getting hit in the body from baseballs and softballs, and they stupidly are way behind on fixing it.

In high school I had a girl in my gym class that eventually went on to pitch for the Canadian softball team, at the time I had no idea she was a ball player though. The gym teacher bet me, in front of the whole class, that she could strike me out...I was like "huh, no way, like come on". Sure as shit she made me look silly. Most people don't realize how much bend the ball has when you use that throwing motion. One pitch i thought was gonna crack me in the skull but it dropped hard and away & right over the plate. I got humbled hard.
