Nice theory, BUT…it was stated that the Katsuyu body that Naruto had on him had relayed what had happened during fight and when Naruto was talking to Nagato. Also, as a villager that was revived or who had lost a loved one you’d want to find out who saved them and seeing as Katsuyu was scattered around the village, as she was the reason some people even managed to survive the shinra tensei, it wouldn’t be hard for word to spread rather quickly.

Exactly this. Naruto did impossible shit including soloing pain, avenging Jiraiya and we are not even going to talk about his MVP acts during the great war in which he was basically going everywhere in every armies with his clones killing white zetsus and he even went against the old guards ( Shika and Ino dad and another rando) in order to meet Nagato and talk jutsu him. If he did same shit anybody else would have done a lot of people would have stayed death including kakashi. He had the courage to stand up against his own allies for the greater good. Katsuyu related all that shit and unless villagers are distrustful of Katsuu and Tsunade (impossible) they are inclined to believe it. Also it is explained near the end of the arc that people were starting to root for Naruto all along for quite a while ever since his fight with Neji and how he brought back Tsunade.

Being said, if the theory is correct, how come Nagato didn't need to do any special signs or hand seals in order to cast this genjutsu on multiple souls? And when does the Byakugan get it's own genjutsu abilities?

Yea I would’ve thought it was obvious that the slug summoning told everyone. While naruto was fighting she literally told every ninja that had the slug summoning with them to not help naruto because they’ll get in the way. Naruto made that request 😭💀. Also after pain was defeated the slug summoning told shikamaru’s and ino’s dads and they went stop naruto (because he just wanted to talk to nagato). It’s was just telephone at thats point

I have a slightly different but similar theory. I believe that, like Kakashi when everyone was dead they all had a moment of clarity and saw someone important to them, just like Kakashi. Now, maybe you can call it a genjutsu but I don't think it was necessarily planned by Nagato. I believe that has those people were in limbo they were all able to see the bigger picture and became aware of all the times Naruto had saved them, Reminding them of all he had done in the past. When they return, they are already realizing something amazing has happened to them when they are told it was Naruto, They celebrate him for saving the Village and also for all the times they didn't celebrate having come to fully appreciate just what an amazing Person he is. They were the king and he protected them time and time again and this, made him Hokage in their hearts way before he actually became the official Hokage

The biggest problem with this theory is the issue you've stated before with Kotoamatsukame, and that is that a lot of people could tell that they were under Genjutsu, and then break it. And even if everybody in Konoha who would be capable of that were under Genjutsu, surely some people would've noticed it during the war arc, people from outside of the village.
