Two best guitar players EVER!! Finally, Larry Carlton and Robben Ford together jamming!! TONE, TASTE, and STYLE... CRAZY Stuff!! TONE, TONE, TONE!!! I know the whole best guitarists thing is a matter of opinion... but how else was i supposed to get you to watch the vid?? These guys are what you call "Musicians' Musicians." 90% of the well known, professioal guitarists will point to one of these guys as being the best there is.. Look it up there is no BS here... Also the band backing these guys up is incredibly talented.. The drummer is just wicked good!! Oh and the bass player is Larry's son... Also, I posted another vid of them jamming a more upbeat rock tune, pretty damn good song too!!
My favorite lick is at 3:17, then what he does after is amazing to. All the way up until Robben plays..
ANYWAYZ I HOPE YOU ENJOY!!!!
PEACE!!!

I can die a happy man after reading this comment. But I suppose you have the same taste as I… Did not see this video getting 10 mil views when I posted it. If I remember correctly, the analytics were high on 2 or more watches/listened. Mission accomplished. Robben is at his best when The Blue Line is behind him. Larry, when he’s playing for Donald Fagen or Steely Dan. There’s just no argument against it, it even makes sense logically… Two guys got together to put together the perfect band for the perfect album. After many tryouts, seeing every session player in La, in the 70’s (All the best players were in LA, That’s where most guitar music was made and the 70’s was the hight of guitar music).. The person they picked for the perfect band was Larry Carlton. The best guitarist… The next biggest decade for guitar music is the 90’s.. Robben was the best in LA then. Put them both on stage together and Boom.. “The Two Best Guitarists Ever!!!”

There is technical proficiency and superiority and then there is playing with a passion, soul and intonation that others just can not duplicate. Guys like Hendricks, Duane Skydog, Clapton, Freddy King, SRV had that certain IT quality that others simply can not capture. Attending college in the 70's and 80's I got to hear many of the greats and few compare to Hendricks, Duane, or SRV. George Benson is also a virtuoso guitarist who goes largely under the radar. However, try listening to Julian Bream and John Williams and you will recognize brilliance. There are a few record albums that I would not like living without, Friday Night in San Francisco by the trio of Al Di Meola, Paco de Lucia, and John McLaughlin is an album all those enamored with the guitar should never be without. Live at the Filmore East by the ABB a Masterpiece.. Julian Bream and John Williams together, while a recital of classical compositions by virtuoso guitarists and not Rock or the Blues, is still simply amazing and should be in all guitar aficionados collection. Likewise Miles Davis' Kind of Blue is a must have. Duane was quoted as saying he listen to Kind of Blue 24/7 and it influenced his improvisational abilities greatly. There are/were so many great and influential guitarists. Rather than getting fixated on who was the best as that is a largely subjective argument, gravitate to who moved and inspires you the most, as that is what really matters to me at least. There is no right or wrong answer to music, if it moves you that is what counts.

Probably because you listened to him a lot in your youth. I grew up on Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple. Rory was more popular in Europe than he was here in the states. Anybody who can sell 30 million albums is doing something right. He is considered the first white European blues player. Later players like Stevie Ray Vaughn and Gary Moore were huge Rory fans. I understand he was well liked in the music community. Brian May of Queen and Alex Lifespan of Rush both knew Rory and spoke highly of him. Even Jimi Hendrix replied when someone asked him how it felt to be the world's best guitarist. He replied "I don't know, go ask Rory Gallagher".It was tragic how he died, basically killed by some idiot doctors. The medicine they gave him was not to be taken by people who drank alcohol often. They should have their licences taken permanently and did a few years in jail for that stunt.

I'm old enough to have seen him with Paul Butterfield blues band and the Electric Flag during the formative years of the San Francisco rock/ blues scene. He had one of the most distinctive, innovative styles of playing the blues, ever. Then he discovered the killer of all things human, methamphetamine. I watched it destroy him physically and musically until it left him as nothing more than a footnote in musical history. Tragic. He could have been known as one of the all-time greats.

I am so in love with the dynamics that the entire band holds themselves to. It's like a classical recording in the fact that the band is SO good with their dynamics that the listener has to turn up their volume just a shade to catch all the beautiful nuances that each player brings to the table within softer sections. WOW. Such salt, such nasty, such beauty, such fluency and tastefulness. Inspiration at it's best. All I have is my humble opinion. Thank you for letting me express mine.

However, it's hard to believe how long it took for Rory Gallagher, Jeff Beck and Gary Moore to be mentioned in the discussion. I was in the Electric Lady studios for days while Stevie Wonder recorded Talking Book, when I got tired the guy who ran the place took me to a room with hundreds of unpublished tapes of Jimi and many other great musicians, a treasure trove! Not bad at all, indeed. As the high Priest of Bop, piano player Thelonious Monk once told 'BILLBOARD' editors, when he (with Charles Mingus) was named 'Jazzman of the Year' in 1965:" I've got to eat and sleep. I don't have the time to care about everything that is said. I must care about where I'm going. I don't care, where others are going. Now, let's stop talking and start playin'"

It IS subjective. It's art! having said that, there is a difference between being technically good or artistically good. Steve Via could play circles around Clapton but artistically? There are many many great guitarists, I personally like lot's of them but Zappa is right up there. He is technically awesome but just once in a while he was artistic as well and even emotional which is not his thing usually. Google "Watermelon on the Easter Hay". In any case this is a great cut and very bluesy which I love. Thanks for sharing.

Caelroigh Blunt Would consider Danny Gatton as well, the man is a killer, Joe Pessa, Tommy Emmanuel in a complete different style (accoustic, pure joy to watch and humbling). You probably know them though :). Pure matter of sensibility, but Rory Gallagher has this grasp over me, I just can"t get enough of him. I've learnt so much about guitar thanks to him, a very original and innovative guitarist if you know the man. Very versatile as well, though not a technical virtuoso like some of the ones you quoted. Anyway, guitar is the best :)

Kevin Barry that is a great statement. And I think that is a problem with so many guitars starting in the 1980s, or maybe in the 70s,. The first guitarist that I remember who played way too many notes, though he was skillful, was Alvin Lee of 10 Years After. My favorite guitarist is Michael Bloomfield and while sometimes he played a lot of notes there was also a lot of notes that he didn't play that made some of his work extremely tasteful. Martin Heidegger was one of the biggest philosophers of the 20th century and he contended that the silence between the sounds of anything are what yields the most meaning. I love that BB quote.

I have seen many but the two that stand out, that make a guitar talk in many languages are Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. there are others that can pick faster, create imaginative riffs, technically superior, but for making a guitar talk there are none better than Jimi and Stevie. If I had to pick one, it would give the edge to Stevie.

I've been a fan of Larry C. for a long time, but I have to agree with you on this one!! I saw Duane just before he died, (yeah, I'm that old, but I still rock out!) and he was amazing!!!! I have to wonder what music would be like today if he (and Jimi) had not died so early .......

+Joe Noe I hope you are not a guitar player yourself. And if you are I'd suggest you learn to respect the ones who came before you. These two are legends... What are you??

+David W first, legends are those who are not alive. second, you can say they are good very good or excellent, but how can you say they are the best ever. what arguments are to proove that...

Tommy Emmanuel is one of the best living guitarists. Steve morse who won guitarist of the year 5 or 6 years in a row. And ofcourse my favorite of all time is stevie ray vaughn. Roy clark, Jerry reed from smokey and the bandit, glen campbell, chet atkins , ricky skaggs and on and on. Its all subjective. Roy clark was an amazing guitarist. One of the all time greats. Slash said he would be out of a job if all the guitar players in Nashville left Nashville.
