ArcherReview's NCLEX Topic lectures focus on extremely high-yield content for your NCLEX. The videos are intended to explain the underlying concepts and the "why" behind what you do as a nurse. This conceptual understanding helps you retain the topics better than memorizing some mnemonics alone. This Labs and ABGs video explains :
1. Common laboratory values tested on the NCLEX. Knowing the normal ranges helps you recognize the abnormal values and arrive at a possible differential diagnosis.
Please note that you need not know the exact number of cut-offs. Lab values have a range, and they vary slightly from lab to lab based on the assays they use. Therefore, any LAB value tested on your NCLEX will be essentially deviant from the normal range, extensive enough for you to recognize it as abnormal.
2. Arterial Blood Gases ( ABGs): Knowledge about arterial blood gases helps diagnose critical acid-base imbalances: metabolic and respiratory acidosis; metabolic and respiratory alkalosis. Understand the pathophysiology and understand the "why?" behind the imbalance so you can promptly notify the healthcare provider or attempt a lifesaving nursing intervention within your scope of practice.
While mixed acid-base disorders are essential in practice, they are not frequently tested on your NCLEX.
