This same thing happened with me. I went to change carbons. He fitted it to the bike but with reversed polarity. The motor spins but could start the engine. I came home, researched a little on the internet. Then i removed the self motor myself, saw that the lines didn't match. So i did the same as you did and boom it started the engine. Next day i went to the mechanic and paid him ( i didn't pay him earlier) and explained him the process. From that day onwards i service my self motor at home (the incident made me learn about it)

Chumbak positive and negetive hi chipakti hain.. same polarity nahi chipakti... Aur har motor AC ho ya DC magnetization se hi chalti hain....
