I feel like Haechan's vocals have really improved and matured over the last couple years. His voice used to be a little bit strained sometimes, I think because he was kind of trying to have a different tone that didn't really come naturally to him, but it sounds so nice nowadays. He can get up really high, but it always feels supported. And his pitch is so accurate all the time, when he sings live it sounds recorded.

I want to cry because Haechan actually said that himself. Remember how he wanted to forget the whole Firetruck / NCT #127 EP? He said he sounded like a kid. I think it had something to do with his maturity as a whole. His nonstop promotions in 127 and Dream also polished him. His musicality perspective must've also changed over time esp by spending time with the hyungs. I remember his little argument with Doyoung in singing Coming Home. "Is it working on his weakness or highlighting his strengths?" And I'm glad he's working hard on singing. He jokes a lot but he is serious about getting better. I'm happy for him.

I love when they put low tone as vocalists like Jisung and Jaehyun, since usually they are pushed for rapping, even if Jisung does both, i wouldn't lie that i want him a full time vocalist, his deep voice harmonize well with the high voice of all 3 vocalists.

Chenle was classically trained as a child, and I think that’s why his breathe control and stability is so consistent. However, I’ve found that type of training is oftentimes not very helpful when it comes to singing pop music. What works for classical music does not translate into more contemporary styles, and that might be why he doesn’t seem quite as comfortable as the top two? Idk just a thought. And yes, Haechan is a star. Watching him perform is like watching the future of kpop. I can’t wait to watch him blossom into a fully fledged icon!

Deanne Bramers you are right. Chenle doesn’t sing in typical kpop way but under the influence of Chinese vocal training. Actually I think he does well in singing English songs>Chinese songs>kpop music

I agree. My voice has been more classically trained so i have no problem singing classical music however whenever i’m singing pop songs just for fun it almost feels like i have never learned any technique at all lol. It’s really hard to transfer your classical skills to pop music, honestly i think Chenle has done a pretty good job :)

Yes I agree. l don't know much about singing or dance but I would say he's sort of like Winwin in dance but in singing? Like Winwin is an amazing dancer in Chinese Traditional Dance but his extensive training in the Chinese traditional dance style didn't really help him and even hindered him when he's dancing in the NCT hip-hop style. WayV's dance style does seem to fit him more. So Chenle is sort of like Winwin but in vocals. He's had Chinese Classical vocal training but that training didn't really help him when he's singing pop. Again, I have no training in dance or singing but this is just what I think and what I've seen from videos.

I can agree with this because I learned classical singing for 8 years and when I tried singing pop I started to overthink where I should place it and how and it prevented me from being able to go high. So that might be with Chenle also his voice is still changing now so he he will get a lot more comfotable when his voice actually stops changing. My favorite part of haechan’s voice is that it’s really agile, riffs and runs seem so easy for him, id really love to see him do some complex ones. But other than that his tone is one my favorites ever

I feel like Chenle went into 'voice puberty' a little later than most of the other. He and Jisung are about the same age (Chenle's a couple months older) but I think Jisungs voice started changing sooner than Chenle's. And with the others, I feel like they were right around that turning point around the time they debuted, where their voice was still not done changing but had started the process already. Chenle took a little longer and has only had his 'new voice' for a short time I think, like before Boom it wasn't this low yet (correct me if I'm wrong) so I think that same as with Jisung he's still getting used to going from the really high voice he had to the lower one he has now. Only with Chenle it's slightly different because Jisung didn't really sing that much before (a couple lines here and there but nothing really big or impressive) and Chenle did (boy's been doing concerts since he was like 7) so I think Chenle's not used to not being able to use the technique he's been taught and perfected before. As well as that the change is more recent for him and him being right in the middle of the process, it wouldn't surprise me if his voice got even more lower from now on. I didn't mean to write a novel in the comments lol, I don't even know if any of that made sense, but it did to me

i agree, he definitely has a comfort in singing itself but he's had a lot more practice singing in his style as a child compared to now as someone in his late teens. although he does seem to take a lot of breaths in between lines compared to others and i'm not sure how exactly that happened? still possibly related to puberty? but i can't wait to see him and everyone else grow more :)

I like that you pointed that out!! his voice definitely changed so much even since go, which was like early 2018? I hope he gets the chance to explore his lower tones, I think his range goes deeper than haechan/renjun's where they keep giving him lines that reach higher. Then again he's constantly surprising me with the things he can do, like his vocal fry in quiet down, his lines in the up to you collab, his harmonizing with renjun in their school assignment song...I think he has a lot of things he could showcase but not so much opportunity being given to him ;_____; they definitely rely heavily on him to stabilize though, chenle is the backbone of choruses!!!!!

Chenle kinda just being done with his puberty, I think, bcuz he lost his dolphin sounded laugh (kinda lost) like last year so there was not enough time to deal with how to sing everything he could sing before. Honestly Nct Dream songs won't sounded like Nct Dream if chinese lines leave dream. Even with ot5 dream, dream still can maintain their signature sounds because of them. Same case how Taeil become signature sounds of Nct 127, like T7S and Boss don't feel like Nct 127 songs because there are no Taeil. I think it is kinda difficult to explain but I hope you understand what I mean

I am also a huge Heachan fan. I too didn't like his voice at first and then one day I was addicted to the sound and listen for it is all NCT's songs where he participates. Just like his voice can be so smooth, his dancing style is the same. He hits all the pops but somehow looks graceful and effortless when he does. All of these guys are still so young. In Korea, everyone is 1 from the time they are born. And everyone gets a year older on New Year's day. So your Korean age is always either one or two years older than your Western age. Suppose, if you were born in 1985, your age in other countries would be 32 but in Korea you are 34 years old. So, Jisung has a birthday coming up and was born in Feb of 2002 so in the West he would be 18 this year. Heachan was born June 6, 2000 so he would be 19/20 this year. Mark is older than Heachan, then Renjun, March 23, 2000, with Jisung as the youngest, then Chenle and the rest. So they are all still very young and SM does keep working on their voices. Beckhyun , born May 6, 1992, with EXO just recently was talking about the singing classes he was still taking as an example. Loved the Analysis. I really enjoy your station.

I love Jisung's lower voice and I'm so happy he might end up like Jaehyun as one of the few well developed and well used baritones in Kpop! And Chenle is actually my favorite of the main three, his tone is just so smooth and he has such good control, although I agree that he still has some adjusting to do. I also agree with your comment about Jisung and Jaehyun, I think SM knows Jisung has this potential like Jaehyun but because he still in his puberty time, so SM still pushes him softly to take this vocal line more seriously, I think when the time he getting older and his voice already more stable, SM going to push Jisung hardly to become one of Dream's lead vocal. And I think SM is trying to reincarnate Taemin with Jisung, both of them are main dancers who are increasingly becoming all-rounded golden maknae

Chenle's voice used to be super high before the puberty, he was very active in China as a child singer, was one of the most younger singer to perform a solo at Golden hall of Vienna, and released 2 solo albums before joining nct. Haechan is very underrated as a vocalist compared to how amazing he really is. Even 127 agrees that he sounds amazing live and exactly like the CD. Jisung, in a few years, is going to be amazing if he keeps working hard. If you get a chance, search Jisung singing Harry Styles’ Falling. Renjun tho. I love his emotional & sensitive vocals😭 and honestly I am always impressed by how fast he improved considering he has no vocal background prior to sm and trained the least(even auditioned as a dancer) but he has proven time and time again that he is a very capable main vocalist. Even when haechan isn't present he carries the lines and notes very well. You wouldn't have noticed that they are missing another main vocal (dont take it as hate. Haechan is the best vocalist in dream) I think SM has really noticed his improvements and potentials and start to giving more spotlight in general and not holding him back in the shadows anymore esp since go era. He's so young and I cant wait for what the future holds for him. Right now he's unstoppable. He's constantly improving and is also a consistent charismatic performer on stage 💚 Huang Renjun appreciation rant over lol

I'm so glad that you looked at NCT Dream, I feel like you went through the same process i (and a lot of nct fans) went through, which is, you hear haechan's voice the first couple of times and it's like, "huh thats different" and then suddenly you're hooked. I totally agree about him being rnb leaning I feel like that was really showed on "love song" on neo zone, and there's something sort of rnb (or maybe just something more smooth and rough at the same time) about "quiet down". I think even if 127 has some of the more "hard hitting" vocalists, dream can feel like the vocal unit because their discography is more vocal based. I think Chenle's stability is legitimately ridiculous, when I watch stages with the mr removed i'm always shocked at how its so consistent, and clear and crisp. I totally get what you are saying about Jeno's voice, I feel like it has qualities i don't really get but know can go somewhere so i'm really curious to see where it goes. Sorry this is so all over the place but I saww the notification and immediatly went "!!!!!" and it did not disappoint at all! I was watching this with a friend and they immediatly commented on your ability to critique and be specific without it feeling like its an egregious problem, and they are so right and the word that popped into my head was "bedside manner". Renjuns voice has developed so well over the years and he has the potential to become one of the best vocalists in nct if he keeps it up. Tonewise he's quickly become one of my favourite sm vocalists. Reminds me of Kyungsoos smoothness

Since they’re still young, it’s obvious they’re improving & dreamies growth is really amazing, personally my favourite vocalists in dream is Chenle & Renjun. Their voices are rlly amazing and it’s really nice to hear when they harmonise. (+)In their new album there is also parts where jisung’s vocals caught me off guard. I think is only me, but I think haechan’s voice will shine even more especially in 127 if he get more lines(like kick it). In any songs of nct, I would always recognised his voice first.

I agree. Somehow even though Dreamies only have 3 vocalists meanwhile 127 have 5 vocalists, I find Haechan's voice is more shine in Nct 127 than Nct Dream. I think it is either because Nct 127's music that more suitable for his vocal or his vocal in Nct Dream are kinda tone down a bit

I feel like Renjun has the most potential vocally with the right amount of training. Haechen's voice stood out to me the first time I heard one of NCT's song. I love his vocal tone. Chenle's voice is really pretty and pleasant. I really liked your thoughts on Jisung's vocals too.

I really love Haechan's voice, and i feel that he's one of the singers in nct that has improved the most! Also, i know you have a lot of gg in queue and you're busy but, i wanted to request Loona for whenever you can, they have a lot of strong vocalist 7 or 8/12 and very different vocal colors, and since they have a wide discography you can see how each one of them manages diffents keys or genres.

chenle has to adjust and adapt a bit more to his ‘’new voice’’ but after that .. kinda scared, he’ll be such a tough competitor to ‘’beat’’ for the no. 1 spot. tho i do absolutely also think he’s deserving enough to be there now. also idrk i think chenles range (widest supported range in dream i think) is fantastic from his low notes in quiet down to him belting in renjun and his graduation song hes insanee. i feel like sm still hasnt let chenle show his all yet (his 1st ever high note was in a song renjun&chenle composed themselves, that tells u a lot), so i do understand why he got the spot he got in this video. but tbh for me, consistency is v important, bc yes everyone can sound good in the studio but at the end of the day its the live performance that counts if it makes sense?? I am sooooo impressed with Renjun's vocal growth. He auditioned as a dancer and he was just a lead vocal for Dream, back when Dream had ChenHyuck as the main. He got lesser lines among the three during their rookie days. But then Renjun vastly improved. It's noticeable from 2018 Go to We Go Up. The way he's getting more and more lines, especially on the parts where vocals need to shine, shows how much their producers are now trusting Renjun with his vocal capability. His No. 1 cover and Fireflies are the best songs that showcase just that. And you know what's nicer? He's still freaking TWENTY!! He'll develop and improve for sure!!!!!!

Btw, I recently discovered that many of SM singers went through problems with cords during training and later, like Red Velvet's Wendy and Seulgi to the point of losing the voice for some time all together. So nowadays not all of them can use their mix as comfortably as before. I wonder if something like that happened to Chenle, as he has been singing since childhood 🤔

I think with him, his voice changed as he went through puberty. He brought up a good point that everyone is still navigating their new voice. And a lot of those times is was because of the way the idol had been singing before SM, if you look at them now they tend to have a healthier technique, like Wendy for example

I think Wendy overused her voice when she trained, same goes with Seulgi. To Wendy, good technique comes naturally so her trainer helped developed her currently brilliant head voice, which really helped her be powerful, but more easily

I wanna thank you for the insight. I was watching this in suspense waiting for those final three because i'm constantly back and forth. Haechan's voice has always been my number one because i'm always in awe of the uniqueness and the seemingly effortless ability, I literally never shut up about his voice online and it's one of my favourites to study. Renjun's voice really grew on me during my time as a fan but like you said its the ideal idol voice so i kind of forget how special it really is at times. Chenle's voice has grown so much since debut, if you find clips of him singing literally a year (If that) before he got signed his voice still hasn't dropped now he's got the deepest range of the main vocalists it hadn't really dawned on me how much his voice has changed until this latest comeback. I truly love how he's kept his stability to the point of where I (and many other fans) barely noticed that it was changing on him. He reminds of a classical vocalist in ways and i'd pay to see him try his hand at that style of singing. Haechan and Chenle are my go tos when i wanna have fun watching vocals and i wish there was more analysis like this out there. side note I'm so excited to see where Jisung ends up in few years, he says he's been working hard on his voice and you can tell he's trying. I laughed when you showed how he does his vocal placement because Chenle teases him for that exact thing.

I've always loved Chenle's voice since the beginning, he deserves more. I hate it sometimes that people always made him underrated. I appreciate that he always had quite much lines in every songs, although it's unnoticeable to some people somehow. Anyway, his voice never fails to makes me and his other admirers to love him even more. P.S. Sometimes I feel uncomfortable whenever people mentioned him it's always been money-related. He was already a singer since his childhood and yet the most common thing that lingers on people's thoughts about him were just money.

With Chenle, his basics are solid and he's naturally good at singing, but he seems to be afraid of expanding the capacity of his voice. I was so excited to watch this episode since I'm a big fan of nct. I always love how insightful your videos are. I don't really know much about singing techniques and all that so I always learn something new while watching your videos. Haechan really has a unique voice. We have a proverb/saying in portuguese "primeiro estranha-se, depois entranha-se" which means - roughly - at first you find it strange but then with time it really "penetrates" you and I think everyone goes through that with his voice. At first it sounds so different and a little weird, I would say, but the more you listen to it the more captivating it is. It's like magic. He is sooo amazing and I LOVE his timbre.
