He must have some basic understanding of Chinese and Japanese because he has to learn it to communicate to an extent with the members who are native to that language.

He can’t speak Chinese. A lot of Korean vocabulary is borrowed directly from Chinese, so many words will typically sound similar or even the same. It’s not hard to guess what Korean word corresponds to the Chinese word.
