UPDATE: The other egg hatched and in less than 24 hours, the dad killed and ate it too. Both 🐣🐣 RIP ❤❤😢 😢I don't think he liked being the babysitter, he looked mad the whole time. Poor lil Eaglet didn't have a chance, I hope the dad doesn't kill the remaining egg. RIP little Eaglet. ❤❤❤❤🙏

Eagles don't notice things like we do, when she returned to the nest she continued to incubate the remaining egg.

Eagles aren't the brightest birds. A lot of what they do is instinct. I've noticed a lot of people who believe eagles grieve when an egg doesn't hatch, etc., but they don't.

@@AlitleInLuv you should watch the FOBB nest and how Shadow and Jackie grieve their unhatched eggs. Eagles are instinctive but they are also sentient beings. You should have also seen M15 grieve the loss of his beloved Harriet when she went missing last year at SWFL Eagles. There was another nest this year where a young eaglet died in the nest, it's sibling knew it was sick and grieved it's loss. It was sad to watch and I think Joseph Trotter has a video of it. Eagles may not be as smart as crows, but they are not ignorant either... this mother has noticed both of her eaglets missing after letting the young dad care for them and ultimately killing and eating them. Eagles do grieve. You may not see the mom doing this because she may have flown off to grieve in silence.

I think there's something wrong with the little one, which is why he ate it. When he is trying to feed it, the little one doesn't seem interested. Most little ones are really eager to eat and can't get enough

I need to be more attentive to the subject title. 😥😥😥 Mom doesn't seem too worried that she's missing a baby! 😥😥 💜🙏💜🙏💜

I wonder if the remaining egg will hatch?
@josephtrotter9 ай бұрын
The first egg was not expected to hatch since it wasn't covered at times during the cold, many called it a miracle, so I think the chance of the second hatching is very low.
@michaelhalahan9 ай бұрын
@@josephtrotter Joseph--i would not make that assessment. You have compounded speculation on speculation to reach a factual conclusion--Yes, the Egg did indeed hatch. Tragic event here. I've never seen it before with a new eagle dad, but did see Tom kill & Eat his first hatch and it was only Angel( the Mom) flying in at last second to keep him from repeating the same behavior on second egg hatch, which did hatch and Fledge , and Tom became the a Super Dad for that second hawklet. We are all waiting for Tom and Angel to start another Nest Clutch this year at the same nest as last yr. they have been fixing it up with limbs and nest fluff for Sev Weeks. I see by the comments posted here, there are many people are not familiar with Eagle behavior--perhaps thinking: maybe 5 of 10 new dads eat their first Hatch--Not True --maybe 1 in 10k or 100k do it-- But total speculation on my part for positing that. NEVER HAVE HEARD OF A NEW DAD EAGLE DOING THIS--TOTALLY ABERRANT BEHAVIOR FOR AN EAGLE and never heard of it described in Bird literature by wildlife Biologists--it's so rare.
@josephtrotter9 ай бұрын
Hello! Good to see you. @michaelhalahan! I agree that I was reiterating second hand speculation, I assumed the situation was similar to big bear as I heard the eggs were passed due and they had been subjected to cold temperatures unprotected for long periods of time. It's rare I suppose, although it happened twice in 1 day, here and at the Hanover Pa nest, both first time dads just like Tom was. I can only imagine the thousands of nests not on camera that occasionally have new dads, perhaps this is more normal than we realize. I remember the Tom incident last year and am also awaiting their new season!!
@josephtrotter9 ай бұрын
I recall Tom did not eat the first hatch, but rather moved it out of the nest bowl and Angel took it away thereafter her arrival.

So to me the biggest reason this immature father is not successful is his nest making capabilities. Look at the deep crack that chick is in. Look to the right center. Now look left front ! You can see right through the nest! It seems it may be too deep and a third or less in needed width to be successful in raisin two eaglets. Hope for best. The chick can’t reach the food. The father can’t reach the chick. It’s the nest. Now the chick is weak and not begging for food actively. It has stressed the adult and when the adult decides things have gone sideways? They abort the family mission consume the leftovers and soon decide whether to start over this year.
