ND Mazda Miata Aftermarket Exhaust Sound Comparison / Test - Greddy / Goodwin Racing / STOCK

Looking for an ND Miata aftermarket exhaust for your 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata? In this video we compare two aftermarket Miata exhausts to the Miata stock exhaust. We test exhaust sound levels (decibels, dB) for the Greddy Supreme SP Miata exhaust (cat-back), the Goodwin Racing Roadster Sport SupperStreet exhaust (axle-back), and the Miata OEM stock exhaust on our 2019 Miata RF project car. I chose the Goodwin Roadster SuperStreet TwinTip for my 2016 ND. To enjoy the total driving experience you have to hear it to properly drive it. I got the interchangeable baffles available that allowed me to tune the drive for highway, around the town or the track. It also made it easier to trade off with my wife to use occasionally as her daily driver. After more than a year the baffles have come off and are stored away in a drawer. This is what the car should have sounded like straight of the showroom floor.

I'm excited to get the GWR on the car, but I' really want to dyno each component as I go, and with the dyno shop being closed due to Covid19, I'm not sure when that's going to happen. With that said, I'm not surprised about the baffles be in your drawer : )

Thanks for putting in the effort to make the comparison. A few metrics around HP gain, weights v stock, retail price, warranty (maybe this was in the narrative I skipped over - see other's comment on editing down) would of added value to your evaluation. I get your test constraints and appreciate you acknowledged them but for dB, you couldn't of designed a more flawed evaluation comparing a stock RF, cat back rag top, and axle back rag top... I'm in the camp an aftermarket should be louder, should sound better, must look better, must weigh less, and maybe provide a couple HP gain. I do think you were spot on mentioning *if* its a daily driver, and you spend time @ highway speed during your commute, a system that has inherent drone would be disappointing for most. I just picked up a 2020 RF GT and went with the GWR RoadsterSport SuperStreet TwinTip cat back. This car is my wife's daily (I get to play on the weekends) and her commute is

I like the looks of the dual exhaust set up of the Ulter Sport Mufflers. It is hard to make a 4 cylinder sound good , so it should at least look good. o

I got the Goodwin Super Street twin tips, no baffle installed, but will shortly. Sounds great. Only louder when you step on it. Agree with you on steering wheel. (My car16 MX-5 Club) Flat 124 wheel might be preferable.🤔🤔🤔 Great Review, thanks for your efforts.

The Lemon Factor! I like the higher tone, (baffle inserted fully in driver side tip) more of a sports car sound...well, to an ole guy anyway😁👍 It sounded loud at first but now seems perfect. Only loud when you tip into it. Seems just about perfect to me. Extra hp boost is a plus as well, it is peppier. 👍👍

Actually... I should confirm with the other owners. The sound tube is in place for the stock car. Regardless the impact should be minimal as it primarily impacts engine bay sound.

@@TheLemonFactor I don't have my car yet, but I am under the impression the sound tube amplifies sound to the interior of the car, for the driver. I'm pretty sure, elimination of the sound tube, makes the cabin a lot quieter. Which means the decibel readings for the exhaust would be different inside the car, without the sound tube. I hate all these little, rude, loud ass 4 banger cars driving around here in Reno and while I would like to get more HP out of the 2018 RF I am getting, I don't want to be one of those guys...this is why your video helps a lot, but the inside decibel readings may not indicate the real sound, due to the sound tube, (which by the way is kind of baffling to me).

@@alangross2277 Yes, the sound tube does augment the engine sound heard within the cabin of the vehicle. However, I do not believe changing a muffler has any meaningful impact to sound as it directly pertains to the sound tube, as the change is sound is not coming from the engine area.

Goodwin Racing twin tip SuperQ. Removable baffles and I didn’t want too much noise with the addition of the Goodwin Max midpipe. Just a wonderful tone with or without baffles.

I have own performance cars all my life from V8s down to 4cyls. I have never ever desired for a loud obnoxious exhaust. I don't understand why people think it's cooler to be louder. In fact the latest trend is to have exhausts with crackling backfires. Why are we going backwards in time? There was a time when backfires were embarrassing to have. Crazy effing crazy. I do agree with you, louder especially on the freeway will get tiring. This is why I am about to trade-in my fun 3 wheeler toy (slingshot) for a miata. Very nice "batcycle". As far as the exhausts... everyone has their own unique tastes, I for one wouldn't mind having a little more bass tone, but not necessarily being louder (dB).

@@TheLemonFactor No issues with deeper sounds, my issue will always be with obnoxiously loud. I was talking to this 20 something last year who was giving me a ride is his old heavily modded hatchback. The one thing you can't help but notice was the loud exhaust. I asked him point blank, how do you get it past state inspection, he says he pays someone $100 to pass the inspection with the clearly illegal exhaust. That's how pathetic it gets with this stupid fad of louder is better/cooler/macho-er. Now crackling backfires are all the rage. I was biking one day and heard what I thought were gunshots in the distance, turns out it was some kid goosing his engine showing off the backfire. Sad, just sad.

I too have a ‘19 RF GT-S in Machine Gray/Auburn Nappa and I’ve pretty much narrowed it down to the same two exhausts but haven’t been able to hear either in person yet. While I too have a second car (coincidentally a white Accord), I enjoy commuting regularly in the Miata and don’t want to introduce “drone” for those highway miles. How was the SSST in that respect? Another difference to keep in mind on the Greddy test is that the harmonics are different on the ‘18 engine/exhaust, which further complicates a direct comparison.

Good taste in cars! As far as the exhausts... I went a little overboard on Black Friday and order both the Greddy cat-back, and the GWR SSST w/ mid-pipe, so whenever they arrive I'll be testing both more thoroughly.

I have the Racing Beat race/sport single tip muffler on my 1.5 ND. It was amazing, then I had a turbo conversion and now it doesn't have the same noise! More power = happy, less sound = less happy. Net happiness: increased. What have other 1.5 turbo owners got on theirs?

@@robertmcwhatling Now that your car is turbo'd, and putting out more HP / back-pressure, you might benefit (slight) from a larger exhaust. I couldn't tell either, but the Tanabe is probably 2.375" or so, and you might find a 2.5" exhaust more to your liking.

@@TheLemonFactor it's obvious people like your in depth reviews, but some people will not like how long they are. KZbin rewards you also based on how much of your video people watch and likes given to the video as well. They also reward you for how many and how often you upload. I am no expert on the subject, just putting out there what i know. Maybe you could make a shorter video encapsulating the essential info to go along with your longer video's? I don't know just giving you feed back, not even sure if that is good advice. As for content, i love miata's and cars in general, but specifically miata's, so it's right up my ally. I have to admit though i fast forwarded a few times, 25 mins is a long time to spend on a exhaust video. Not that it's bad, i just don't currently have a miata, so it's a passing interest atm, if i however had one, this video may have been invaluable.........

These are good videos but I got to be honest here. Just get one! They all sound better than the stock. This being such a small car and being soft tops they all drone, I don’t care what anyone says. You either like a loud car or you don’t. Either way everyone around you is gonna look to see what the noise and fuss is about. I have the Borla and it’s loud as shit! So just buy an exhaust already and live with it.

If you're ever going to go with a mid-pipe, then I would stick with the SS. The SS is nice, and is a good step up from stock. I think the Race would bring it to the next level for sound and tone.
