According to the biographies, Tchaikovsky was a highly sensitive man who felt deeply and bursted into tears when was emotionally touched, often while composing. In his music, and especially in this symphony, he has captured the whole spectrum of emotions in a captivating and realistic manner - joy, excitement, nostalgia, longing, love, sadness, anxiety, anger, sorrow, depression. Only after nine days of the world premiere Tchaikovsky passed away due to cholera which was infected with him via the glass of an unboiled water. One can’t listen to the finale without tears in the eyes - when music speaks directly to the heart after 130 years it was written that’s what one could call the work of a genius. One of the greatest symphonies. Excellent performance by NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester and maestro Alan Gilbert!

What a gift we're given with this FREE performance of a great symphony by a first rate orchestra in an awesome hall, beautifully captured. So what exactly is. your complaint? Someone coughed. Someone applauded when you think they shouldn't? Get over yourselves. This is a gift. Enjoy the music. If you can't... find another performance... the one that is perfect... in your eyes.

I agree, (even if I newly commented these applaudes in a perhaps sarcastic way) and I had myself applauded this music if I were sitting there, after the third movement. And I am highly enjoying this music, thank you.

I knew it! Not even the public in this hall could restist to give an applaud after the third movement, still waiting for the tragic last movement. It seems to be a human reaction to applaud after the third! 🙂

The Pathetique and Mahler 6 are perhaps the greatest of the tragic symphonies. Mahler 9 follows the model of the Pathetique in how the movements are structured, but is not really tragic in the end, just peaceful acceptance.
