I used to see Carol Lawrence on the afternoon game shows when I was a teen. Never knew who she was. When I discovered she was the original Maria she became a Goddess to me.

True to the spirit of Bernstein's original, as one would expect from the former conductor of the New York Philharmonic. Born on the Upper West Side to boot.

Einfach großartig. Tolle Musik, tolle Orchesterleistung, großartiger Dirigent. Bravo!
To me, a stand out performance is what happens between the notes - the breath, the vibrations, the transitions. And in the case of the Symphonic Dances I'm looking for the finger clicks and shouts of "Mambo!". It's what takes the performance to the top 10/10. The energy, vitality, verve. That then needs to be contrasted with the sweetness of the adagio/Somewhere at the end, set against the doom-laden tolling bell from the basses. Brava! As an aside, finally I've seen an orchestra with such a good balanace of male/female musicians. Sadly not always the case - eeven in 2023!!!

Another excellent performance by the members of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra and Maestro Alan Gilbert! Bravo to the principal viola for the beautiful solo in "Somewhere" and, likewise, bravo to the "heroic" principal trumpet for performing the many "high-note" passages on the standard C trumpet*! (*instead using one of the smaller "piccolo" trumpets)
@NDRKlassik2 жыл бұрын
Yes! Thank you for mentioning our fabulous colleagues: It is Teresa Schwamm at the principal viola (in "Somewhere" followed by our equally fantastic solo horn player Claudia Strenkert and solo oboist Paulus van der Merwe 🤩) and the "heroic" principal trumpet player is Guillaume Couloumy!

It’s a sluggish performance and the brass is out-of-balance. Alan Gilbert tends to be heavy-handed anyway from his NYP days. But I’ll also admit that this music just works better with a smaller ensemble like a pit orchestra. This arrangement is too “thick in the middle,” as my orchestration teach used to say.
