Vrindavan widows should not beg: Hema Malini to NDTV

BJP MP from Mathura Hema Malini speaks to NDTV on her controversial statement that widows of Vrindavan are overcrowding the city. In an exclusive interview she asks, "Why do many of the widows who are well off and living comfortably still beg on streets?" She tells NDTV, Vrindavan widows should be counselled not to beg and rehabilitated so that they can live and die with dignity. She also says that the governments of Bihar, Odisha and West Bengal, from where most of the widows come, can also take care of them instead of throwing them out.

So much negative comments about Hema. You people just try to understand her point, her english may not be the best, however Hemaji meant well. She is giving good advice to the widows by saying....do not beg! look for work, do something worthwhile with your life.

How easy it is to just say do something worthwhile. Tell me, with no education, being old, seen as bad luck and looked down upon by society, how many of these women will gain decent employment? The reality is that society needs to change their f**ked up way of thinking and give these women respect for bearing children and bringing them up. See them as humans, not sub-humans. What a disgrace to the Indian culture.. you don't see this on tourism adverts . A hidden shame

What? Even young, educated people who have skills do not find employment many times. How do you expect old, illiterate women, with no financial backing or family support to find employment? Moreover the work industry has changed dramatically over last few decades. It has become increasing hi tech, which requires technical skills. And the hi tech industry is displacing more and more human labor due to higher automation.

This is not right and our society overlooks them. They are victims of their own families, abandoned because they are widowed and that they are not auspicious to see at any time of the day. Wild tradition which should not be allowed to survive. There are very young widows also who are in their teens. We have to rehabilitate them, give them courage to live and enjoy. Our nation is ignoring them for a long long time. Please take it up and the citizens make a move to support them and give them life health and joy. Om Namah Shivaya!

Why this plight of widows ? If all citizens of India including celebrities be honest and pay taxes due , avoid corruption, the divide between poor and rich will reduce thereby reducing all social evils too in society !!

Well it is obvious that Hema didn't like what she said. I can see a sense of guilty & she is mixing everything so that she won't get caught by media speaking any more controversial matters. Probably....she was frustrated by looking at poor women everywhere & said go back. Later realized that it was harsh on her part. And now she is worried. To rectify what you have done....Just gather support from celebrities Hema....your Bollywood folks claim their movies make 200 crores, 300 crores or 500 crores. Your movies will have dramas about old women mistreated. So, why doesn't these Bollywood riches help these poor women who are helpless?
