I'm friends with Scott aka Carrot top and though I havent seen him for years he is the nicest ,most gracious and respectful person I've ever met in show business in 25 years. His character in real life extends infinitely. You can talk smack, but he is a genuine soul whose success make others jealous and he has zero ego about it. I will back him till I die.

I listen to a few comedy based podcasts. Two of them have had Carrot Top as a guest, and they were great episodes. The one with Steve O is good, and I really enjoyed the interview Andrew Santino (Whiskey Ginger) did with him. It answered my, “whatever happened to that guy?” question, and it was interesting to hear a bit of his backstory. Talked about his rise in popularity, then the backlash from when he got jacked from weightlifting, and then his current residency gig in Vegas. I’ve always heard comics say how much of a good guy he is, and I’ve heard him tell a few stories (like this one) where you can tell that he is as nice as I’ve heard others say he is. Also, his current show is apparently really good, so he’s still reaping the rewards & success from how hard he works on his performances.

If you look hard enough for what you are looking for, you can find it anywhere.

Can confirm that Gallagher was kind of an angry guy. Saw him in Milwaukee a little bit before he died and he was hilarious, but the crowds reaction wasn't big enough so he would yell at us that his joke was funny. Glad to have actually seen him, but it was weird to see him as a somewhat bitter angry guy and not the goofy comedian from the 70s and 80s.

Unfortunately people saw his last performances as a whacko going too far out there. Stating the obvious deceptions committed by organizations entrusted to people's cultural beliefs and telling everyone the real motivation behind it all just made too many folks angry.

I think there was more tension and "uprightness" back when Gallagher was a kid, a lot of follow the rules etc and he had to call that out. Think of everyone wearing button up shirts tucked into slacks pulled up to their belly buttons. He to more of a laugh back then because his comedy was needed more. He needed to remind people to be silly and free and think outside the box. While there's still uptight people, just being silly or out of the box isn't what tickles that need right now.

What he wanted to say was he never took the jokes, (smart stuff), but instead he did the action comedy, (slapstick), which was all his very own but how many comics of the time had such a dynamic and physical comedy show? He had a tough time accepting his influence as a mentor and that's the issue he focused on.

I grew up with Gallagher and Carrot Top. I had no idea any of this stuff going on behind the scenes. I didn't even know they knew each other. My mind is blown. My perspective have changed. Gallagher had a brother? What? I went to a small Gallagher show in the late 90s, when I was a teen. The smell was atrocious, by the way, with all the food and other crap being smashed. I can still smell it. I talked to him after the show for about 10 seconds while getting a signed photo. I thought something was off about him, even during the show. He was chunkier and had less energy than what I saw on TV. I summed it up to him being older and depressed about the small gigs. Now I'm wondering if that was actually him or if it was his brother. It was totally his brother, wasn't it? My whole world is upside down.

Gallagher was a hero of mine as a kid. Sadly he became this way with his fans too. His later shows, a bit before he passed, were just mean spirited and a real bummer. Just such a shame. I got to be on stage with him twice. Once a drunk fan fell and hit their head on a table and then the floor and blacked out, show ended right there, I have that all posted online. The saw him again a year or two later and got to smash the 1st melon on stage. All surreal now listening to these stories from Carrottop and what all went down.

As a full time musician entertainer, I tried Vegas 2009-2010 quite unsuccessfully. I ran into Carrot top twice in my networking and he was always nice with a greeting. It was like he knew I was trying to be somebody in the business and just wanted to be a friendly face. He's just a real nice human being. Oh, Mr. Brennan, great video. As a fan of Gallagher, I'm very disappointed in him, but I'd rather know than be ignorant. Carrot Top was very respectful in his re-telling of a very sad story.

I spent an evening with Gallagher once. Without giving too much away, a close friend worked for him and they flew in to my city. I picked them up at the hotel and had a very personable and memorable time. He was a brilliant guy. Socially though, he sometimes had a different set of boundaries, as Carrot described. He was nothing but cool that day. The three of us met in the lobby and sat down at a table for a few minutes before heading out. Gallagher pulls out a cigar type box that contains short pencils and little note pads. He passes them out and says he wants the three of us to write down any good business ideas we could think of throughput the course of the night. He was serious. I've been backstage riding his adult sized Big Wheel, and visited his warehouse in Vegas once - which was a total trip. It's like being an adult kid in a place full of incredible toys. He was one of those guys who constantly searched for the next thing.

Artists back then could be very tough and a little crazy, I had a mentor/teacher that was a nice guy. He made his way up in Vegas as a guitarist starting out as a dishwasher to playing crooner and Jobim music in various casinos. But when it came down to business it was as serious as it could get. I have friends that have stories of other musicians in NY that just blew my mind how hard and crazy they could be. Different times with different experiences I guess.

I think Gallagher was suffering from a form of dementia as he got older. From most reports of personal interactions with him he seemed like a pretty cool and down to earth guy in his younger years, but he got angrier and more bitter as he aged and kind of lost the ability to have normal interactions with people. It's weird because his standup was still strong even during this period. I get the sense that he really liked and respected Carrot Top despite the bitterness.

I don't he had dementia since the stories of him being nutty with people go back over 2 decades before he died. He still was sharp with his act later in life. Even George Carlin had a good mind and quick witted before he died, but his attitude was very dower and bitter at the state of the world.

No bit: I had a very sad ending with my own mentor when his mental health deteriorated in the same kind of way. It's really a tough thing to go through because you know this person for so long but he goes in and mess with your livelihood. It's a real hard mental place to sit with. I think the only thing that probably made that situation bearable was the fact that you did have a story to tell after the fact and that's basically what you're in the business of. I'm really emotionally glad that I got to hear this story and thank you for telling it

I remember loving Carrot Top as a kid from one joke that I don't even truly recall, it was like, a prop hand that he used to get the prizes out of cereal boxes? I think he shouted "GIVE ME MY PRIZE!" As a kid I died laughing, and then later saw Chairman of the Board and assumed he was cool. This was around the Yahoo Serious/Drop Dead Fred era of America... As I got older people kept making fun of him publicly and I thought, "oh I guess he's lame." Now as an adult I love hearing him on podcasts, he's just amazing to listen to, but especially loved this one, this Gallagher story was intense. I strive to be Carrot Top, but I fear becoming Gallagher. Imagine being so disconnected from reality and your perception that Carrot Top hands you a chance at redemption and to have your story live on in the hearts of others... and you just DIE ALONE, TOO DUMB TO REALIZE WHAT WAS HAPPENING.

Mental illness is a killer, don't kid yourself. The sad fact is he might have had some hope through therapy but when you get that tied up inside your own head you aren't going to be looking for help.

no joke. this was fascinating. during the vhs tape rental boom Gallagher tapes were nearly a weekly thing. i loved his humor, it's sad how paranoid he was. you'd think he was some hack prop comic with no substance, but his humor on language and politics were definitely for the thinking fan. RIP Gallagher.

Just to add my own experience with Gallagher. We saw him shortly before his death at a dinner theatre at The Woodlands, Texas called "Dosey Doe's". I did not plan ahead and only had credit cards on me. I got there and found that Gallagher merchandise was being sold only on a cash basis. When I approached him I asked if he took credit cards and he responded no. At that point I mentioned that we appreciated his work over the years and that if he had a web site we would pick up merchandise there. He then simply said "What do you want". I was not asking for charity. I simply replied "Nothing. I am here because I respect you and have been entertained by your work for years. I am not asking for anything." I was not mad but I felt that he was salty and that his entire life was looking at how others were trying to exploit his works. I really felt sad for him. I wanted nothing more than to give him the love he deserved and he only could see others trying to exploit him. God Bless Gallagher and I do hope he can see the truth from the other side.

I remember Carrot Top appearing on MTV comedy shows in the early '90s and I thought he was great. I'm glad to see he's still doing great. Gotta see him one of these days. "Gallagher wearing a Carrot Top shirt" is a priceless victory, especially if he really took the shirt home. Terrific interview. Sometimes I want to tell Neal to shut up his pretty face but he's so cute that I can't make myself do it.

Prop comics are highly underrated in the world of stand-up. I remember a a kid Gallagher was one of the funniest comedians I ever saw. As I got older, I got more into traditional stand-ups, but my love for stand-up really started with Gallagher.

Holy crap, I had a very similar experience when I met Gallagher at about 10! My mom's work sponsored a show, and I got to go to the meet-n-greet with her. He asked me to tell him a joke (I didn't write it, something random I heard at school), and then when he found out I wasn't going to the actual show, he put me on the guest list to get in for free. Then during the show, he told a version of the joke I told him. It was such a cool experience as a little kid seeing this guy on my family TV all the time.

I kept waiting for the happy ending to the Gallagher story, but it never resolved itself. And having seen both of their acts, I agree that Gallagher’s political comedy was brilliant and the fruit smashing prop comedy stuff was definitely the “dumb part.”

Gallagher also did a lot of prop stuff, so I can see why he was suspicious of Top. But Top was merely influenced by him and he should have felt honored. That said, Gallagher in his prime was 10x the comic Carrot Top is, and a lot better than he gets credit for these days.
