Im from Minnesota. We have lots of lakes and slimy boat ramps. I've come prepared with blocks of wood with a rope attached to shove behind front and back tires to help prevent or at least slow the vehicle from going back too far!? And then yank them out fast when ready to move out? And also have big chunks of carpet to put in front of all four tires for extra traction -this is done during winter when cars get stuck in snow and ice. I'm actually amazed people here don't come prepared with these also. I see them digging out nowhere and dumping kitty litter. I've come to the rescue for countless people.

That was a great save, as a boat owner I'd like to know how it happened. Nobody sets out to put the back half of their truck in the water. Not only am I a boat owner I am also a parent, I can say nearly every "what was I thinking" event in my life came when I was dealing with something having to do with my kids. When I take my boat to the ramp I either make sure my kids are on the dock where I can see them or in the boat where I can see them, tell them to stay put, so far it's worked out. Given the age of that truck I suggest they go ahead and have the axle, brake calipers rebuilt, chances are water got in.

Great save! About the trailers floating at the ramp. Am I missing something? I've loaded my lighter boat than these at numerous different ramp angles for the past 20 years. Most of them Mississippi river ramps which are steeper than most. Unless the water is high, then its launching in the parking lots which is of course very low angle. What I don't get is the depth that these people on Miami Boat Ramps back their trailers to. Is it really necessary to get the trailer so deep that the boat floats all the way to the bow winch? Its that depth that is floating the trailers. Tires full of air float when fully submerged. Can't the boats be driven up on the bunks or rollers which positions the boat more precisely and keeps the trailer from floating? Maybe the motor has to be used a little to power the boat onto the last foot or two of trailer but that is a normal, isn't it? Power the boat on and/or use the winch to pull it on the last bit?

You don’t really have to go that deep with a regular trailer. If you’re launching you normally don’t want to go in so far the boat is completely floating. Same with pulling it out. The boat should be on the trailer at least a little.

@waynewong38802 жыл бұрын
Most boat trailers these days are the bunk type, thus winching will be difficult. Boats are larger and heavier now than the old days. Roller type trailers are easier to winch but are dangerous…come to a sudden stop on the freeway and the boat will fly over the winch and onto the tow vehicle. Or the boat can just roll off if the tie downs break and the winch fails to hold.
@sportscarclinic2 жыл бұрын
@@waynewong3880 If you tow a trailer, roller or bunk, and don't know enough to anchor the back of the boat with tie-downs, or you tow with just the winch attached, you're an idiot, regardless of what type of trailer you're towing.

2 things come to mind. If your trailer floats, dont drop it in so far and let the boat weight anchor it if you need to. Also, why does every one with twin or trips on the back, use the wheel to steer in reverse? If the boat is set up properly, you can vary the thrust or direction of the engines, while moving backwards to keep you straight or move in a certain direction. Both of the Towboat US capts did it trying to get the bow of the boats pointed where they wanted. They both turned the engines instead of backing down on 1 engine.
