Stucco is not fire proof, combustion is a process that includes heat, fuel and oxygen, the framing behind the stucco can get hot enough to spontaneously combust. Eaves and openings, including doors and windows are also very vulnerable. It really depends on where the embers get to. Spoken as an architect who designs homes in extreme fire hazard areas.
@cal-native
@cal-native 2 жыл бұрын
There are a number of entry points for ember attack to finally reach critical mass and ignite a structure - exposed eaves, unscreened vents, uncovered ends of tile runs (especially if there's rat or bird nests), vinyl framed windows, wooden side fences/gates contacting the house, wooden sheds or even firewood against the house, vegetation directly under the eaves, plus the radiant heat can ignite the wooden studs behind the stucco Completely cleared slopes that leave the home totally exposed to the canyon can contribute as well..
@nathaniellindner313
@nathaniellindner313 2 жыл бұрын
The insulation value of stucco and traditional tile are a lot less than you may expect - only about 0.2 R-value, a fraction of fiberglass or mineral wool insulation. So even a modest brushfire like this one can get the stud wall framing behind that stucco hot enough to ignite it, or an ember can just get under an unprotected roof and lodge directly in an exposed wood rafter for an even more direct source of ignition. There have been a lot of new rules introduced in the past decade (when wildfires started to drastically increase in size) for vulnerable houses like these to reduce the ability of them to ignite, but if these houses are even fifteen years old, most of them will have been built in the older, more vulnerable style, and few owners update their buildings to protect them, so unfortunately, if a house isn't from about 2010 onwards, it won't have much protection from wildfire.

They need to go back to Spanish colonial building techniques. They built the buildings to resist fire. That was one of the reasons why they had mud walls and terra-cotta roofs. Those building techniques reduce the chances of fire spreading throughout the community. Admittedly, the structures in the community were built a lot closer than they are now.

There is a popular public hiking trail right along the front of all these homes. The views of the coastline and Catalina are spectacular. I’ve been there many times taking photos and videos. In shock that this happened; but there’s a lot of very dry vegetation leading up the hill to this ridge, and high winds at times.

That one house between all the burned down ones are crazy. Home owner is probably one of those people you see spraying everything down with a water hose before the fire arrives and everything survived
@timotmon
@timotmon 2 жыл бұрын
I really wonder if that does much good.. for a home to catch fire it has to be burning at a pretty intense heat. Any water that you can get out of a garden hose and onto your structure would evaporate rather quickly by the time the fire arrived. I do remember a guy in L.A. I think it was the Glendale fires who had something equivalent to a fire hose through which he was able to suck water out of his pool. He was indeed able to save his home while others burned around him. So who knows. Still though, I couldn't fault a home owner for trying.
@7phyton
@7phyton 2 жыл бұрын
That's probably not the reason at all. He/she/they probably made sure their house was as close to ember proof as is feasible, and maybe had fire shutters on exterior windows facing the direction of the beautiful natural habitat. As the fire chief explained, it's almost entirely embers burning people's houses, not directly the wildfire or even vegetation in their yards.

As someone that understands basic math, your logic is bad and dumb. Insurance companies sell insurance to make money, they just calculate the expected payout and then add a premium to that and sell it. Just because it is a high-risk high payout to insure a big home in a fire zone doesn't mean they wouldn't sell a costly insurance policy for a profit. Math is hard, I know.

And whattya know. Edison reported "circuit activity" in the area, a euphemism for "yeah, our shoddy electrical equipment caused yet another fire." SDG&E, PG&E and SCE give their campaign contributions; and in exchange Sacramento allows a revolving door of execs to bounce between working for utilities and sitting on the Public Utilities Commission and of course allow them to skate from updating decades old equipment and clearing brush. This has been a blatantly obvious issue going all the way back to the Witch Creek fire in San Diego in 2007 which had multiple electrical sources. PG&E alone caused 1,500 fires in six years. They now list the utilities as the third most common cause of wildfires in CA, with the kicker being they have to be 100% certain in the investigation even if a utility looks suspect. Nuisance and company are acting all tough about it. If the politicians are really being tough, why are PUC meetings still closed to the public? Let that sink in. Sure climate change is an issue, but so is the "new normal" of just allowing utilities to cause fires. I dunno, it's a complex issue involving insurance companies for the utilities, the expensive costs of updating equipment, and above all else allowing special interest groups to dictate policy in exchange for campaign contributions. Maybe this is just the way it needs to be. That ratepayers aren't hammered in general, but the people who choose to live in neighborhoods right next to tinder boxes shoulder the costs and only get back a percentage of their equity when their crib burns to the ground.

Trees are standing, and the lawns are green. It's about hydration - believe it or not, sometimes native vegetation can actually help protect a home in a fire if used properly and lightly irrigated, since so little water is required to achieve fire-resistant hydration, compared to say, ice plant, which is boring, crappy erosion control, and doesn't block or catch embers.

On top of a ridge between dry open brush fields is literally the worst spot to build a home in California. There should be a whole new business created for making your house more fireproof. It looked like 99% of it spread because embers getting under the roof tiles. They need to be sealed, treated and inspected for fire risk and really every house in high risk spots should be provided with some sort of preventative gel you spray on your house before evacuation. The city should provide it though the firemen where they determine the highest likely spots. It would make firemens job easier and safer and will prevent the spread of Covid. I mean fire.

Isn't cost effective. They make fireproofing that would stand up to wildifre temps (temporarily.) But, the cost of these products is too high. It costs about 200 dollars per gallon and that will cover around 250 square feet of your home exterior. You'd also need to cover the perimeter around your home, too. Most firetruck hold a out 1,000 gallons of water. It'd be 1/4 million dollars to fill 1 firetruck with proper retardant and that could, MAYBE provide temporary protection for 5 houses.

One of the things that strikes me in looking at this is 1)the ice plant covered slopes near the homes burned; 2) the fire skipped right past areas cleared to bare ground; 3) that clearing did nothing to mitigate the fire risk; 4) hydrated, thinned vegetation at the wildland/urban interface may have provided better ember catching/cooling opportunities and turbulence to break up ember flow. That always amazes me how people build such big houses on such a tiny plot of land. It must be a housing project for the extreme wealthy. Every one has a swimming pool. I would invest in a portable fire pump & hose, in order to use that water to help save my home or my neighbor's.

Well you'd THINK these high end homes would be better prepared for such a situation.....but wouldn't make a big difference the way homes are on top of each other. If you live in a high fire danger area, get serious about creating defensible space around structures, sprinkler systems,fire pumps that are supplied by maybe a pool, or a dedicated tank/cistern that can give you a couple thousand gallons of water ready, with the ability to replenish water you use with your well/city water. If you're spending multiple 100's of thousands even multiple millions of dollars on a home then what's the extra money to go the extra mile to protect that investment. Removing brush and undergrowth, clean gutters, and covers for any exterior vents into the home goes a long way in itself, 100ft all the way around is ideal, more is better. If you have other homes that's in that 100ft then it certainly limits what you can do.
