See the description for tools and the supplies. NOTE: After seeing the video, OUTEX felt they should only uphold 50% of their promised refund. This is because the rear worked perfectly, however, the front was leaking a 4:52 and then it became worse at 8:55. Because of using silicone, which is not part of the OUTEX kit, at 10:15 well after the multiple occurrences of the OUTEX system leaking, they will only cover the rear instalation, not the front. OUTEX now believes, after having re-watched the video, the reason for the leaks on the front is due to my application of the tape not being installed straight. I.E. I have installed it incorrectly. I am not suggesting you, the view, should or should not use outex. I am only being fully transparent with my experience with both the product and the company. 6,500 km and the rear is still trouble free.
@Pathrider16 күн бұрын
I did the Outex conversion twice on my 2016 Africa Twin, and both the front and back held air better than tubes both times. Why twice? Well, the spokes on the 2016 AT were prone to rotting, so I was offered a new set of 2018 wheels with stainless spokes on warranty. That meant I had to redo the Outex. That of course means that my dealer got me the replacement wheels even though I had the Outex kit fitted. I guess they could have denied my claim because of that, I don't know. Anyway, I found that with the front especially an assistant holding the wheel giving a bit of resistance meant the tape would go on straight and it could stretch a little thereby sinking into the well a bit better. I thought it was a fantastic improvement.

@Pathrider honda is very good with warranties, thats why people trust them over other brands. The front didn't stick at all, it was coming off right away. Your approach sounds good, but at 1/5th the price, the 3m I used in the other video is working perfectly with the rim strap and I don't much like the outex company on a matter of honesty.

As a former bicycle mechanic I have done many "tubeless conversions" to the smaller two wheeled cousins, and in my experience I wouldn't trust any "conversion" in the long run. Especially on vehicles capable of reaching high speeds. The inherit variance in applying these kits means sometimes it can go well, but not always. Even when the kit comes installed from the manufacturer (typical on high-end mtb wheels) I have seen them fail. There was a standard called UST for bicycle rims and matching tires and it was great. It used a solid (no holes drilled) rim on the inside to make it airtight. And the rim lip had a square seal. Sadly it didn't catch on. I never saw any abnormal issues with these setups. In short... for tubeless to work well and not have to mess with it or risk a tire folding in, you need a airtight inner rim with just a hole for the stem. This is something that was figured out long ago. No need to reinvent the wheel!
@DragoniteMotoJP2 ай бұрын
@hawgietonight yes, but you also see people doing these conversations and getting over the 100,000km mark trou le free. The set up I did to the front is even more perfect than this. But you are correct, nothing is a sure as a solid rim. That said, this $100 mod vs $1500 wheels, I'll see how far this takes me. I have 2 free tow-truck rides per year, and if I bed a rim I'll go for replacing the whole setup with after truly sealed rims. Kineo if I have the money, vmx if it's tight.

Thank you for showing us the whole process, it was really informative! I want to do the conversion with 3M 4200 or 5200 on my Africa Twin, just waiting until I need to change the tires, so it’s all done at once. I would never go the stickers and tape route because there are so many cases on youtube and forums of such systems failing, so I don’t trust them. OUTEX deciding to give you only partial refund really says a lot about the brand.
@DragoniteMotoJP4 ай бұрын
@KikoBW7 I did the 4200 seal today on my front wheel. Video in a week or 2. Yes, wait to do tire changes at the same time. Taking the same tire on and off so much I damaged the bead. No beyond repair, but just an added headache

@RedRupert642 ай бұрын
@@KikoBW7 This is not a good solution, as moisture gets trapped by the silicone sealant and causes corrosion. Also, the layer of silicone makes changing tyres a fair bit more difficult, as it partially fills the valley in which the tyre needs to drop into while fitting and removing tyres. Also, if the seal fails, there is no practical way to make a repair while on the road, therefore it's necessary to carry a spare tube, or two, and tools, which defeats several of the benefits of having tubeless wheels. The best solution is to fit proper tubeless wheels, it's fairly expensive, but the best way.
@HaggisPower3 ай бұрын
Yep, I could see you struggle laying down both tapes on the front, it wandered all over. I've had a lot of experience with tubeless tapes on mtb rims, so I thought I knew what I was getting into with the Outex installation. What I learnt was you get one shot at getting it right with the tapes, you CANNOT reposition so you have to be extremely patient and extremely accurate. Just the right amount of tension on the tape helps, so having someone else to hold the wheel on a piece of carpet can be useful. My install took about 5hrs including deburring the nipples and cleaning rim with acetone then IPA (don't need to sand anything if the rim is super clean). I've done 25,000km on my kit in the last 3yrs on three sets of tyres. Holds air very well (loses 1-2psi/month), and I don't have to worry about tubes blowing out, which can be fairly disastrous.

No way. In time, moisture will get past the nipples and weaken the adhesive. The trapped moisture will also cause corrosion. The Transalp is a relatively inexpensive bike, but really they should have fitted it with tubeless wheels. Especially as it's an adventure bike. I understand that Honda may want to keep a price and specification gap between that bike and the Africa Twin, but still.
@DragoniteMotoJP2 ай бұрын
@RedRupert64 only time will tell. But so far no issues. The air pressure did a good job squeezing the tape into the niple. Some people do have long term corrosion but no more than you'd get with tubes. But I don't trust it, you can see my 3m approach to the front and I'm far more happy with that. If it fails, there is always vmx for a bit of a premium.
