Redgum on the Don Lane Show (!) circa 1984. Line-up is John Schumann (vcls, gtr), Michael Atkinson (gtr, vcls), Verity Truman (flute, vcls), Hugh McDonald (vln, vcls), Stephen Cooney (bs,didge) and Brian Czempinski (drums).
This is a full band version of the song that appeared in acoustic form on the Virgin Ground LP a few years earlier.

In the years when so many vocalists wanted to sound like Americans, John Schumann sang with a proudly Australian voice. I first heard Redgum when I returned to Aus after 20 yrs in the UK and they brought nostalgic tears to my eyes (much to the disgust of my New Romantic friends!) I'm revisiting them on iTunes. They still have the same effect. Maybe because I'm now a 70 y.o. maudlin fart.

Speaking as a sixteen year old "next generation" new romantic I can proudly say that Redgum's music is fantastic. There is always room for folk music!

I know, they have an unapologetic aussie accent that makes a truly unique listening experience. Legends.

love from the US. refreshing to hear folk in a strong Aussie accent. Been a fan of goanna and redgum for a bit now and they got me through some tough times. Both bands, even if from the other side of the world from me, really emphasize fighting for what is right. Sounds cheesy but their love of nature, emphasis on peace, and the problems of failed dreams all reverberate through their songs.

Brilliant. Second non-joke Aussie accent in pop/rock/folk music, after Dave Warner. Best concert was at Canberry Fair in 1982 when they were onstage with the Bushwackers. Redgum lyrics with Bushwackers' musicality!!

Ahh John Shumann. To make politics acceptable in music was one thing but to make it entertaining and engaging was another. Get involved positively and, productively and there is no going back.

@efcstoo Nice comment. I grew up listening to them and thinking this way also! Now so many things have changed but it's funny how it's all still the same! I listened to them again yesterday riding home from work and thought we really need another injection of this sort of music again today! The injustice and corruption seem to be growing but the kids need music that tells them it aint right.

@efcstoo Redgum were fantastic at combining folk/rock with politics, and had a huge following in the Uni circuit as a result. No-one would dare mention then Queensland premier Joh Bjelke-Peterson ("Letter To BJ" off their first album), but they did. Sadly all their original albums are not available on CD, as the only discs are the live "Caught In The Act" and "Anthology" double. I rang John Schuman several years ago to ask, but he didn't hold out much hope of them coming out on CD. It's a shame.
