Damn it. I initially wasn't interested as I only thought it was the 50 page original comic, which I have in trade. Now I find out it has all these other stories, I might have to reconsider, though knowing it was originally solicited as an absolute is a little hard to swallow. One to ponder over... Shazam is one of the great Convergence mini-series along with Nightwing/Oracle and Superman. Swamp Thing was good, but did require some background knowledge.

@NMC: Only recall reading GBGaslight, back in 1989. That was a treat. Factoid: Though there were prior “imaginary” stories from various DC comics in the 1970’s, to my research Gotham by Gaslight (1989) was the very FIRST story of the line. The title was not originally published as an Elseworlds comic, but its success led to the creation of the Elseworlds imprint and Gotham By Gaslight, was retroactively declared - the first Elseworlds story. The first book to feature the Elseworlds logo was Batman: Holy Terror in 1991. Which I loooved! Because it was penciled by none other than one of my Favorite Batman Artists of all time: Norm Breyfogle. In 1994, the Elseworlds imprint was used as the theme for the annual edition of comic books of that summer. And pretty much every summer there after. DC sporadically published various Elseworlds titles from 1989 to 2003. With the advent of the weekly publishing event, the “52” Mini-Series, many of the Elseworlds worlds and characters were depicted therein. A new Multiverse was introduced at the conclusion of the 52 weekly series, that included the alternate worlds that were previously seen in various Elseworlds titles. All of it overseen by then Editor-In-Chief, Mr. Dan DiDio. Great times, loved “52”. Some of the most inventive, and creative Writing in DC comics in many years prior, and since. - Thank you. Don't know if you've read Iron Wolf - Fires of the Revolution but its amazing art by Mignola/P Craig Russel and written by Howard Chaykin (of American Flagg fame); another Howard Chaykin/Mike Mignola collaboration is Fafhyrd and the Gray Mouser. This really should have been an Absolute.

Great review. It's an interesting and artistically diverse collection of the "Steampunk" or Victorian era Dark Knight. The Convergence Shazam 2 parter is a great addition because of the fantastic Doc Shaner art (that calls back to CC Beck's art); a comic talent who is as underrated as Jeff Parker and often (ironically?) work together. I hope they give their Future Quest an OHC too. And I really enjoyed this review because you really added lots of geeky commentary and you literally didn't abuse/misuse "literally" as much as you did in your other videos. 😂😂😂

This book went out of print fast, it is like 3-4 times of that cover price now, I don't get it normally DC deluxe editions don't go out of print that fast or easily nowadays. I just hope DC will make a Batman else world omnibus including this story as well, it is long over due like Batman Legends Of The Dark Knight omnibus

Black label I think no longer means out of continuity. I don't think DC now considers one continuity when referring to the labels. Black Label is just a theme logo. DC black label could still be in continuity of the main Earth while books with standard DC label might not be. So, makes sense it will have a DC label.

The killing joke had a ton of extra content. After looking at this edition, they clearly had nothing extra to offer as far as behind the scenes material usually associated with absolutes. Most original Mignola art might have been hard to come by. Usually for an absolute, the story either has to be long enough or have a ton of supplemental material to justify it like killing joke and year one had. This story offers neither length nor extra content. It's still nice to have in hardcover though.

@@paulseidler1644 Killing joke was also a 40+ page story and they included it twice in absolute (color variations) which made the bulk of the book. Lee Bermejo Joker and Luther was also thin books yet made absolutes. I still think they could do it

@@needfulthingies the killing joke is the exact same length, but it was justified being presented twice since the colors alter the story so much. The full Alan Moore script was included, and was nearly 200 pages alone. And there was a decent sized gallery of Bolland art. Gotham by gaslight apparently offers none of that. If dc does not have access to things like the original script or Mignola art which is a possibility(these things are not always archived or available), then what is the point of a 48 page story getting that treatment? Those extra stories from the crossover events would have been odd as the only features in an absolute especially when Mignola is the only reason for making this an absolute to begin with...

Eh, I think I’m happy with the TPB for now. I spent years of hunting around comic shops for that before they issued a bunch of reprints. It would be pretty awesome if they decided to return to this universe like they are doing with Earth one. I would love to see alternate takes on other Batman Villains. If I’m remembering correctly there is a background Easter egg in one of the panels when Bruce returned to Gotham and is talking with Jim, hinting at the Joker which is pretty cool.

It honestly feels like a more fitting title would be “tales from earth 19” or something of that magnitude. You could even have under it “featuring Gotham by gaslight” it just feels a bit disingenuous to label it as Gotham by gaslight yet most of the book isn’t the titled story.

I know people buy like crazy these days with collected editions but books like these are better to pass on. Seriously, all of it is thrown together to make a quick buck on a product that seems lq. It would have been better to get OHC volumes of elseworld tales by character and then throw in some creator commentary and sketchbook. It is infuriating that for one, highly requested books don't get made or are made poorly (like no table of contents, page count or the series is out of order AKA Spider-Verse or Absolute Carnage). Stories like these deserve better, and so to for the consumer.

I saw all the mad props this story got, so bought it, read it and found myself back on the internet doublechecking if I read the right story; utter disbelief. What a complete turd. The story is flimsy and super rushed, the art is often a bit lazy. Great cover though!!
